Abstract: A DC-component-based fault classification apparatus and method for a three-phase power distribution cable utilizes the reconstructed three-phase currents by measuring the magnetic field around the cable with an array of magnetic sensors arranged around the cable surface. A magnetic shield houses the magnetic sensors and blocks background magnetic fields. A data acquisition system acquires analog signals from the sensors and a processing system extracts DC components in the analog signals for the phases during the transient period after a fault. The potential DC components are extracted by mathematical morphology. These DC components arise in the faulted phases when a fault occurs since there is a large current change in the inductive power network.

  • Publication number: 20190173428
Abstract: An array of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) spin torque oscillators (STOs) is described. Each STO is comprised of a uniform, chemically synthesized, spherical nanoparticle which couples to current flowing along a surface. The particles are organized into an array by a self-assembly technique with uniform spacing and close proximity to allow strong electrical and magnetic coupling between particles. The coupling of the nanoparticles to the surface current drives the oscillations by spin-torque, and for phase locking and data input. The uniform, spherical shape of the particles allows the oscillations to be achieved at low currents and with low power dissipation. The MNP-STOs may be used as a basis for massively parallel computing, microwave oscillators, or other applications.

The method may employ scanning ophthalmic instruments, and enables an enhancement in contrast and collected intensity by axially displacing the image detector away from the object of interest to positions closer to conjugate to layers of strong retinal reflection, like the photoreceptors or the interface between the choroid and the sclera, that act as a diffusive screen.

Abstract: A series of carbohydrate-dye conjugates, as well as a method for detection of pathogenic or other organisms (e.g., bacteria) using the same are provided. The carbohydrate-dye conjugate can be enzymatically incorporated into live and active (viable) bacteria of interest for facile detection of said bacteria. The conjugate incorporation is achieved by utilizing one or more of the enzymes that are endogenous to the bacteria of interest, which can incorporate the conjugate via the conjugate's carbohydrate. A detectable signal is produced by the conjugate's dye only upon incorporation into the bacteria of interest, due to the changes in the dye's local environment upon incorporation. The conjugate may be metabolically incorporated into the fatty outer membrane of a bacterial cell wall, which provides a distinctly hydrophobic environment for the conjugate's dye, causing it to produce a detectable signal.

  • Publication number: 20190169766
Abstract: A regenerative electroless etching process produces nanostructured semiconductors in which an oxidant (Ox1) is used as a catalytic agent to facilitate reaction between a semiconductor and a second oxidant (Ox2) that would be unreactive (or slowly reactive compared to Ox1) in the primary reaction. Ox2 is used to regenerate Ox1, which can initiate etching by injecting holes into the semiconductor valence band. The extent of reaction is controlled by the amount of Ox2 added; the reaction rate, by the injection rate of Ox2. This general strategy is demonstrated specifically to produce highly luminescent nanocrystalline porous, amorphous pillared, and hierarchical porous silicon from the reaction of V2O5 in HF(aq) as Ox1 and H2O2(aq) as Ox2 with a silicon-comprising substrate. The process can be performed on silicon-comprising substrates of arbitrary size and shape including powders, reclaimed shards, wafers, pillared silicon, porous silicon, and silicon nanowires.
