  • Publication number: 20100210527
Abstract: The invention provides a method of selectively pro-oranti-angiogenic treatment of a mammalian subject, comprising site-specific control of alternative splicing during processing of VEGF pre-mRNA transcribed from the C terminal exon 8 of the VEGF gene using controlling agents for the splicing, wherein one or more controlling agent which favours proximal splice site (PSS) splicing in said processing is used in the pro-angiogenic treatment and one or more controlling agent which favours distal splice site (DSS) splicing in said processing is used in the anti-angiogenic treatment.

  • Publication number: 20100209236
Abstract: A bi-directional flow impulse type turbine arrangement (120) for use with a bi-directional reversing flow (F, F1, F2), and in particular for use with an oscillating water column power plant (110). The turbine arrangement (120) has a rotor (120), and first and second sets of guide vanes (140, 142) located on an opposite axial sides of the rotor (132) for directing the bi-directional reversing flow (F, F1, F2) to and from the rotor (132). The guide vanes (140, 142) are disposed at a greater radius and radially offset from the rotor blades (136). The turbine arrangement further comprises first and second annular ducts disposed respectively between the first and second sets of guide vanes (140, 142) and the rotor (132) for directing fluid from the guide vanes (140, 142) to the rotor blades (136).

  • Publication number: 20100119777
Abstract: A method to form an improved hybrid ceramic matrix composite structure comprises providing a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) with open features at a surface and applying a thermal barrier coating to the surface. The thermal barrier coating is preferably a friable graded insulation coating (FGI) having hollow ceramic spheres. For acceptance of a FGI coating the open features have a center-to-center separation distance in one or more directions that is between about 100 and about 1,000 percent of the diameter of the hollow ceramic spheres in the FGI and a depth that is between about 20 percent and about 200 percent of the diameter of the hollow ceramic spheres in the FGI. The open feature can result from the winding of tows about a mandrel; the lay-up of fabric including a surface fabric having an open weave; or the use of a 3-D weave, or a 3-D braid.

  • Publication number: 20100101160
Abstract: According to one embodiment, the energy dissipation of a structural element is increased by inserting one or more resisting elements into the structural element at any time during or after construction of the structural element. The continuous resisting elements are rigidly attached to the structural at one end and connected to the structural element by and through a damping material over at least a portion of its length. When a dynamic force is applied to the structural elements, such as may result from wind or earthquakes, there will be a strain in the structure, in a direction parallel with the longitudinal direction of the resisting elements. In this way, the forces and deformations within the structure will result in a relative motion between the structural element and resisting element, a substantial portion of which is ultimately transmitted by and through the damping material layer.

  • Patent number: 7707051
Abstract: A game that serves to educate a player about the decision making process for determining the cost of a premium for insurance coverage for an entity. The player(s) and/or team(s) select a fictitious name for an insurance company. The company can subsequently bid on providing insurance coverage for an entity. Several rounds of bidding on insurance premiums for providing insurance coverage to an entity can be played before determining a winner of the game. A round consists of a player(s) and/or team(s) bidding on the amount to charge for an insurance premium to insure the entity for a particular period of time, such as one year. The winner of a round is the insurance company (player/team) that provides the lowest bid for the insurance premium for the particular period of time.

  • Patent number: 7653653
Abstract: A dynamically configurable list management system that supports list elements of multiple content types is presented. Each list element is associated with an element type via an element type identifier. The element type identifier uniquely identifies the element type to the list management system. Each property associated with each element type is included in the list. Each property is identified by a unique property identifier. When adding a list element of a new element type to an existing list that does not include any elements of the new element type, the list management system identifies every property associated with the new element type. For each property associated with the new element type, the list management system determines which properties are not already included in the list, and adds those properties that are not already including to the list.
