  • Publication number: 20110168830
Abstract: A winder for winding a web to produce a rolled product is provided. The winder includes a web transport apparatus that is used for conveying the web. Also included in one exemplary embodiment is a plurality of independent winding modules. The winding modules are independently positioned to independently engage the web as the web is conveyed by the web transport apparatus. The winding modules may be configured to wind the web to form a rolled product by center winding, surface winding, and combinations of center and surface winding. The winding modules are structurally and operationally independent of one another where if one module is disabled, another may still operate to produce the rolled product without shutting down the winder.

  • Publication number: 20110170567
Abstract: A pulse of laser light is switched out of a pulse train and spatially dispersed into its constituent wavelengths. The pulse is collimated to a suitable size and then diffracted by high groove density multilayer dielectric gratings. This imparts a different angle to each individual wavelength so that, when brought to the far field with a lens, the colors have spread out in a linear arrangement. The distance between wavelengths (resolution) can be tailored for the specific laser and application by altering the number of times the beam strikes the diffraction gratings, the groove density of the gratings and the focal length of the lens. End portions of the linear arrangement are each directed to a respective detector, which converts the signal to a 1 if the level meets a set-point, and a 0 if the level does not. If both detectors produces a 1, then the pulse train is allowed to propagate into an optical system.

  • Publication number: 20110095116
Abstract: Coreless rolls of tissue, such as rolls of bath tissue or paper towels, are produced by winding tissue logs on a mandrel having retractable pins. During winding, the pins extend and penetrate the first several windings of the log as it is initially wound, which prevents slippage. After the winding is complete, the pins retract to allow the tissue log to slide off of the mandrel for subsequent slitting into individual product rolls and packaging. The penetration of the pins into the first several windings of the log tends to mechanically entangle and structurally unify those windings to create a “soft core”. At the same time, the properties of the tissue sheets within the soft core are the same as the other sheets within the roll and are therefore usable by the consumer.

  • Publication number: 20110079671
Abstract: Coreless tissue rolls can be produced without having to use an adhesive to form a hollow center. Instead, moisture can be used to promote light hydrogen bonding between the layers of the tissue web that line the hollow center. The hydrogen bonding provides sufficient structure to maintain the shape of the hollow center without rendering the tissue web surrounding the passageway unusable. Passageways can also be formed in accordance with the present disclosure that are substantially circular so that the rolls will easily spin on a spindle. In an alternative embodiment, moisture is not used in constructing the wound tissue roll.

  • Publication number: 20110078367
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for providing a L1 cache that is a central storage resource. The L1 cache services multiple clients with diverse latency and bandwidth requirements. The L1 cache may be reconfigured to create multiple storage spaces enabling the L1 cache may replace dedicated buffers, caches, and FIFOs in previous architectures. A “direct mapped” storage region that is configured within the L1 cache may replace dedicated buffers, FIFOs, and interface paths, allowing clients of the L1 cache to exchange attribute and primitive data. The direct mapped storage region may used as a global register file. A “local and global cache” storage region configured within the L1 cache may be used to support load/store memory requests to multiple spaces. These spaces include global, local, and call-return stack (CRS) memory.

  • Publication number: 20110076259
Abstract: A method of detecting a risk of a pregnant female mammal developing pre-eclampsia or a complication linked thereto, or of a fetus of the pregnant female mammal developing a fetal or neonatal deficiency linked to maternal pre-eclampsia, comprises detecting the level of a VEGFxxxb in a sample from the pregnant female mammal at less than about 24 weeks of gestation and comparing the detected level with a reference level. A reduced level in the sample from the pregnant female mammal is indicative of a risk of the pregnant female mammal developing pre-eclampsia or a complication linked thereto or of the fetus developing the fetal or neonatal deficiency linked to maternal pre-eclampsia.

  • Publication number: 20110078692
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for coalescing memory barrier operations across multiple parallel threads. Memory barrier requests from a given parallel thread processing unit are coalesced to reduce the impact to the rest of the system. Additionally, memory barrier requests may specify a level of a set of threads with respect to which the memory transactions are committed. For example, a first type of memory barrier instruction may commit the memory transactions to a level of a set of cooperating threads that share an L1 (level one) cache. A second type of memory barrier instruction may commit the memory transactions to a level of a set of threads sharing a global memory. Finally, a third type of memory barrier instruction may commit the memory transactions to a system level of all threads sharing all system memories. The latency required to execute the memory barrier instruction varies based on the type of memory barrier instruction.

  • Patent number: 7904599
Abstract: Many storage-area networks (SANs) are structured so that an end-user or client-computer can access data on one or more target storage devices through a storage router and a separate Fiber Channel (FC) switch. However, the conventional use of a separate FC switch to couple the storage router makes it difficult and time consuming to restore zone configuration of the FC switch. Accordingly, the present inventor devised, among other things, an exemplary method of automatically maintaining and synchronizing a copy of zone configuration data for an FC switch. Through these and/or other features, the exemplary embodiment ultimately reduces the cost and complexities associated with implementing storage-area networks.
