Abstract: A microelectromechanical (MEMS) package including a compressive system preferentially directs external forces, towards the MEMS sensor in a manner that affects several components of the Quality Factor (Q) of the MEMS system. Relatively rigid materials (force transfer elements) are added or deposited in strategic places along any of the edges, faces or corners of a MEMS sensor, followed by the addition of material, which by virtue of the annealing process, applies a compressive stress to all objects encased therein. As a result, vibrational modes are affected due to changes in the effective mass and spring constants of the total MEMS apparatus system, dampening particular modes and stabilizing the MEMS transducer since such modes cannot be spuriously activated due to environmental changes. By attenuating, or at least causing them to be constant, the spurious modes and their absorption of vibrational energy are predictable over all operating conditions and thus amenable to electronic controls, e.g.

  • Patent number: 9023162
Abstract: Protective laminate films protect an underlying windshield from damage due to impacting rocks and other debris. The protective laminate films generally include a flexible polymer substrate having a scratch resistant coating and an adhesive layer on opposing surfaces thereof. Each layer is transparent such that, when applied to a windshield, the laminate film does not inhibit visibility. Each layer may also be flexible so that the laminate films can be molded to a curved windshield. Generally, the scratch resistant coating protects the laminate films from scratching or other damage from impacting debris and/or from windshield wipers. The substrate provides structural integrity to the laminate films and may provide some degree of impact dispersion. The adhesive layer, in addition to adhering the laminate films to the windshield, may also provide significant impact resistance that helps protect the windshield from cracks or chips due to impacting rocks or other debris.

  • Patent number: 8956494
Abstract: A method for adhering a major substrate to which nano sized concave and convex structures are formed without damaging the concave and convex structures can be used in a production method of a microfluidic device including nano sized fluidic channels. The substrates may be adhered under heat free and adhesive agent free environment by exciting the substrate surface including hard silicone resin with atmospheric plasma or vacuum ultraviolet light, then juxtaposing and pressurizing the surface of the hard silicone resin substrate and glass substrate. The silicone rubber composition is applied on the contact face of the cover substrate and then the silicone rubber composition is cured to form the silicone rubber layer and then the ultraviolet light is exposed under the condition that the surface of the major substrate being formed with concave and convex structures is contacted closely to the silicone rubber layer of the cover substrate.

  • Patent number: 8956478
Abstract: A process for joining, by spark plasma sintering, at least two refractory ceramic parts, each of the parts having at least one surface to be joined by spark plasma sintering, in which surfaces to be joined are brought into contact without addition of any sort between the surfaces. Then, a joining pressure of 1 to 200 MPa is applied to the ceramic parts. A pulsed electric current having an intensity of 500 A to 8000 A is applied to the ceramic parts so as to raise the temperature of the parts to a joining temperature of at least 1300° C. Then, the electric current is terminated simultaneously with the pressure, and the parts are cooled, and the joined parts are recovered.

  • Patent number: 8926782
Abstract: A method for making a polymeric microfluidic structure in which two or more components (layers) of the microfluidic structure are fixedly bonded or laminated with a weak solvent bonding agent, particularly acetonitrile or a mixture of acetonitrile and alcohol. In an aspect, acetonitrile can be used as a weak solvent bonding agent to enclose a microstructure fabricated in or on a non-elastomeric polymer such as polystyrene, polycarbonate, acrylic or other linear polymer to form a three-dimensional microfluidic network. The method involves the steps of wetting at least one of the opposing surfaces of the polymeric substrate components with the weak solvent bonding agent in a given, lower temperature range, adjacently contacting the opposing surfaces, and thermally activating the bonding agent at a higher temperature than the lower temperature range for a given period of time. The contacted polymeric substrates may also be aligned prior to thermal activation and compressed during thermal activation.
