  • Patent number: 6195845
Abstract: A fiber web is formed by the airlay technique on a web forming and transport surface by dispersing and projecting individualized fibers onto said surface by means of a flow of air, and the fibers are subjected to a carding operation prior to being inserted into the flow of air. According to an essential characteristic of the invention, action is taken on the fiber feed rate by means of one or more regulator systems between the carding operation and the insertion of the fibers into the air flow so as to make said fiber feed rate more regular. In a preferred variant of the invention, a regulator system comprises at least a combing cylinder which is designed to be rotated to have a circumferential speed that is strictly less than that of the carding cylinder and that rotates in a direction of rotation that is opposite to that of the carding cylinder, and that is coated on its periphery with a covering whose teeth or spikes point backwards, i.e. in the opposite direction to its direction of rotation.

  • Patent number: 5974628
Abstract: A feed roller with clothing, the so-called taker-in (1A), feeds a first carding cylinder (3,) which presents it to a second carding cylinder (7) which rotates at greater speed than that of the first carding cylinder and which in turn presents the material to a third even faster carding cylinder (11), which in turn presents it to the doffer (13); the clothings (3A,7A,11A) of the successive cylinders are gradually thicker-set and more inclined.

  • Patent number: 5930869
Abstract: The carding distance (KA) between clothings (14, 15) is scanned using an optical device (22, 26) e.g. using a laser beam (24) from the side of the working area. The measuring value thus obtained can be compared to a pre-set target value in such a manner that the distance mentioned can be adjusted. Card with a controllable actuator system (32, 34) for setting the carding gap between the clothing on the main drum and the clothing on the flats, and with a programmable control system (12) which can influence the actuator system. A sensor system (26, 28) measures the carding gap in order to render regulation of the gap possible. The control system obtains, and processes respectively, data connected with the state of the clothing. The control system (12) is programmed in such a manner that regulation is effected as long as the measuring values supplied by the sensor system appear to be "plausible".

  • Patent number: 5920961
Abstract: A ventilated carding cylinder for allowing heat generated in the carding cylinder during operation to be dissipated. The carding cylinder includes an internal, longitudinally extending, air flow passage and impeller means provided therein for moving air through the air flow passage during operation of the carding cylinder. This movement of air aids in dissipating heat generated by the carding cylinder during the fiber carding process. Reduction of heat in the carding cylinder can minimize the risk of fire occurring in the fibers and also thermal growth of the cylinder during operation.

  • Patent number: 5898978
Abstract: Metallic clothing having metallic wire teeth bent at a double angle. The lower portion of each tooth is angled by an first angle with respect to vertical, and the upper portion is angled at a second angle with respect to vertical. The upper portion terminates at the tip, or point, of the tooth. This double-angle tooth profile is angled in the direction opposite to the general direction of travel of fibers being carded. The upper side portion of each tooth is tapered inwardly to the tip, and the rear edge of the upper end of each tooth may be provided with a forward curvature towards the point of the tooth. Alternate embodiments include single angled teeth and a double-angled teeth, each having a base portion substantially the same height as the teeth.

  • Patent number: 5890264
Abstract: An aeromechanical individualizer for individualizing entities within a fiber sample includes a cylindrical rotating beater wheel, having a non-permeable cylindrical surface and having carding elements, such as pins or wire points, on the cylindrical surface. A cylindrical feed roller and feed plate supply the fiber sample to the beater wheel in the form of a beard at a first point along the rotational path thereof. A nozzle directs a gas flow across the feed plate and the beard such that fibers are dragged from the feed plate into engagement with the carding element. At a second point along the rotational path of the beater wheel there is a doffer for removing entities of the beater wheel. An enclosure surrounds the beater wheel and substantially prevents the ingress or egress of the gas except gas flow which enters via the nozzle at the first point and which exits at the second point.

  • Patent number: 5822972
Abstract: A nep separator and detector for presenting a fiber sample having fibers, neps, and trash. A toothed rotating cylinder receives the fiber sample at a fiber sample receiving point, and impacts and propels at least a portion of the trash and neps along an ejection path. An air curtain is directed toward and passes across a portion of the toothed surface of the rotating cylinder, at a location rotationally after the fiber sample is received by the toothed rotating cylinder. The air curtain crosses and is oriented transverse to the ejection path, and draws at least a portion of the neps out of the ejection path and onto the surface of the toothed cylinder as it rotates. The trash propelled by impact with the toothed rotating cylinder has sufficient momentum to pass through the air curtain along the ejection path. A dead air space is positioned in the ejection path and disposed adjacent the air curtain and across the air curtain from the fiber sample receiving point.
