  • Patent number: 9450521
Abstract: A method is disclosed for driving a piezoelectric actuator with a piezoelectric stack, which is operated as an actuating element of an injector. The piezoelectric stack is polarized during production by a polarization process initially with a first field strength, which results in a first length of the piezoelectric stack. According to the method, the piezoelectric stack is driven during operation at a second field strength, which is smaller than the first field strength, wherein a setpoint length for the piezoelectric stack is defined depending on the second field strength. In addition, a change in length caused by depolarization from the setpoint length of the piezoelectric stack is monitored. Then, when a predetermined threshold value for the change in length is reached, the piezoelectric stack is operated at a third field strength until the setpoint length for said piezoelectric stack is reached.

Abstract: A miniature energy harvesting device for producing electricity from acoustical energy, stray electromagnetic energy, noise and from energy of different anatomical motions. The device comprises a housing, a mechanical spring engaged with the housing between a static and dynamic state and a first magnet engaged with the mechanical spring. The device further comprises a conductive grid freely moveable within a cavity of the housing. The device further comprises a composite structure comprising a fixed magnet and a piezoelectric material. The composite structure is engaged with the grid and in communication with the first magnet. The first magnet and the fixed magnet apply a force upon the piezoelectric material when the mechanical spring is in the static state to produce a base voltage. Excitation of the mechanical spring causes the piezoelectric material to generate an alternating voltage output having a peak voltage greater than the base voltage.

Abstract: A piezoelectric actuator is formed by forming first and second electrodes on a substrate, and depositing a material on the substrate and between side surfaces of adjacent first and second electrodes to form a thin film sheet within which the first and the second electrodes extend from a first surface of the thin film sheet towards a second surface of the thin film sheet opposite the first surface. The second electrode is interdigitated in relation to the first electrode. The side surfaces of the first and the second electrodes are at least substantially perpendicular to the substrate. The thin film sheet is to physically deform in response to an electric field induced within the thin film sheet via application of a voltage across the first and the second electrodes.
