Abstract: Backlight support is provided for flat panel displays through use of phospho-luminescent materials. Photo-luminescent materials are integrated into a flat panel display such as an LCD display as a back panel substrate or by embedding in display pixels. When ambient light levels exceed a predetermined threshold the material is activated allowing a reduction in active backlight power. The active backlight may be provided by an electrically supported system such as an ELP, a light pipe, an LED, etc. By reducing the power of the active backlight in an analog manner or through decreasing the duty cycle, an overall power savings is accomplished for the display. By embedding different photo-luminescent materials that operate at different wavelengths, color display may be enhanced while reducing power consumption. Display properties, such as transparency, contrast, etc., may be adjusted to affect phospho-luminescent backlight support.

  • Patent number: 7746423
Abstract: A photo-luminescent (PL) liquid crystal display (LCD) including a blue dichroic mirror layer disposed under a light emitting layer is provided. Visible light generated from the light emitting layer is mostly reflected to the front side of the PL LCD, thereby increasing the light utilization efficiency thereof. A blue PL quantum dot layer is formed in blue light regions, thereby improving a narrow viewing angle and an orientation in blue pixels. An ultraviolet (UV) filter blocking UV light in the ambient light is formed to protect the light emitting layer from the excitation caused by external light, thereby preventing degradation of contrast caused by an undesired light emission.

Abstract: A switching circuit includes multiple transistors connected to the primary winding of a transformer, and alternately applies an input voltage and a ground voltage to the primary winding according to the ON/OFF operations of the transistors. Multiple ballast capacitors are respectively provided to multiple fluorescent lamps. One terminal of each ballast capacitor is connected to the secondary winding so as to form a common terminal. The other terminal thereof is connected to the fluorescent lamp. A first capacitor and a second capacitor are arranged in this order in series between an connection node that connects the fluorescent lamp to be monitored and the corresponding ballast capacitor and the ground terminal. An abnormal state judging unit compares the voltage at the connection node that connects the first capacitor and the second capacitor with a predetermined threshold voltage.

Abstract: A light source incorporates phosphor-based white light emitting diodes (LEDs). The LEDs may be raised off the floor of the optical cavity to permit light to be emitted from the base of the LED. Additionally, a reflective protrusion may be placed beneath the raised LED to aid in redirecting light forward. The LEDs may be skewed in relation to adjacent LEDs to reduce interference. Non-white LEDs may be incorporated into the light source to permit for selective color tuning. Fluorescent lamps may also be implemented in combination with the LEDs to form a hybrid light source. The light source may be used as a backlight for a liquid crystal display assembly.
