Fluorescent lamp, fluorescent lamp unit, liquid crystal display device, and method of emitting light
Publication number: 20020154258Abstract: A liquid crystal display device has a fluorescent lamp and a driving circuit as a back light. A closed container, a discharge gas sealed in the closed container, first discharge electrodes, and second discharge electrodes are included in the fluorescent lamp. The driving circuit repeats a first step of causing electric discharge in first discharge areas by applying a voltage having a negative polarity to the first discharge electrodes and a voltage having a positive polarity to the second discharge electrodes, and a second step of causing electric discharge in second discharge areas which are different from the first discharge areas by applying a voltage having a positive polarity to the first discharge electrodes and a voltage having a negative polarity to the second discharge electrodes.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 12, 2002Publication date: October 24, 2002Applicant: NEC CorporationInventors: Fumihiko Fujishiro, Masatake Baba, Syuuki Yamamori -
Patent number: 6469755Abstract: An illumination apparatus provides an improved light utilization efficiency and improved collimation. The illumination apparatus has a light guide, a collimating unit provided at least on one side of the light guide for collimating rays incident on the light guide, and a light source disposed in the vicinity of the collimating unit and surrounded by a reflector. Preferably, in order for the light guide to be able to emit collimated light uniformly from its emission surface, the light guide has inclined reflecting irregularities or stepwise reflecting plates which are provided directly or via an air gap on a back surface opposite to the emission surface thereof, wherein the inclined reflecting plates are specular-finished at least on the inclined portions.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1999Date of Patent: October 22, 2002Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Masaya Adachi, Ikuo Hiyama, Makoto Tsumura

Publication number: 20020140880Abstract: A liquid crystal display (LCD) device having non-white and white light emitting diodes and a liquid crystal display. A spectrum converting material is positioned between non-white LEDs and the LCD to convert the non-white light from the LEDs toward a white light spectrum. The liquid crystal display may include a plurality of light emitting diodes, a light pipe, and a spectrum converting material. The spectrum converting material may be a phosphorized material located between the plurality of non-white light emitting diodes and the light pipe. A light extracting surface may be located near a first surface of the light pipe, a diffuser located near a second side of the light pipe, where the first and second sides are opposite sides of the light pipe, a reflective polarizer, and an liquid crystal display. The light from the light pipe may passes through the diffuser, the reflective polarizer, before backlighting the liquid crystal display. The non-white LEDs may include blue LED, ultraviolet LEDs, and the like.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 28, 2001Publication date: October 3, 2002Inventors: Paul F.L. Weindorf, Adam Zysnarski
