Abstract: A high intensity solid state light pulse generator, has a low voltage, low range radio frequency carrier wave generator, the output of which is modulated by a low frequency sweep signal, to generate sonoluminescent light pulses visible to the human eye, within a desired spectrum. The modulating sweep signal can be computer generated in a predetermined mode, for a range of outputs. In one embodiment, a carrier wave at 450 kHz is modulated by way of an input in the audio range of 20 to 20,000 Hz. The colour of the output pulses is held to be a function of the modulating frequency. By selection of a suitable modulating frequency, monochromatic light pulses of a predetermined colour may be provided. A semi-mirror laser technique is used in order to amplify the light pulses, to achieve high intensity bursts of light at reduced frequency.

Abstract: An optical film is provided which comprises an antireflective layer and a disperse phase of polymeric particles disposed within a continuous birefringent matrix. The film is oriented, typically by stretching, in one or more directions. The size and shape of the disperse phase particles, the volume fraction of the disperse phase, the film thickness, and the amount of orientation are chosen to attain a desired degree of diffuse reflection and total transmission of electromagnetic radiation of a desired wavelength in the resulting film.

Abstract: A flood light includes a lamp that is located at a focus of a reflecting mirror having a reflecting surface whose cross-section is oval and partially arcuate. A concave lens having negative refracting power is disposed between first and second foci about which an elliptical reflecting surface of the reflecting mirror is disposed. Some light rays from the lamp pass directly from the lamp through the lens while other rays from the lamp are reflected by the mirror before passing through the lens. Generally speaking, on the upstream side of the lens, the reflected rays enter the lens outboard of the rays that pass directly from the lamp to the lens. This construction provides a small flood light that has a high optical output, and effectively uses bundles of rays emitted from the lamp to produce a luminous intensity distribution desirable as light for range finding.

  • Patent number: 6290533
Abstract: An electrical plug incorporates a light beam between the prongs of the plug. The light beam is forwardly directed such that the plug can illuminate a socket where the plug is to be inserted. The plug body includes a circuit board having a light, resistor, battery and switch. A first type of switch that is used includes a push button attached to a spring and contact pads mounted on the circuit board, wherein when the button is pressed the spring electrically connects contact pads within the circuit thus closing the circuit and activating the light. A second type of switch that is used incorporates contact pads and a flexible cover having a pair of electrically conductive leaves hingedly attached to its underside. When an exterior surface above the cover is pressed the leaves move upward and electrically connect contact pads within the circuit thereby closing the circuit and activating the light.

  • Patent number: 6280064
Abstract: The reflective surface of a reflector 16 is divided through steps into a plurality of vertically elongated reflective surface elements. In each of those reflective surface elements, the light incidence section to which the output light of a light source bulb is applied is made up a convex cylindrical curved surface and a concave cylindrical curved surface which are arranged substantially in parallel with the step adjacent to the light incidence section. Accordingly, when the lamp is turned on, and the reflector is observed from the front, the light incidence sections function as follows; that is, the apex portions of the cylindrical curves surfaces look glittered as bright sections. Therefore, the reflective surface looks more sparkling.

  • Patent number: 6220730
Abstract: An illumination obscurement device for controlling the obscurement of illumination from a light source which is optimized for use with a rectangular, arrayed, selective reflection device. In a preferred embodiment, a rotatable shutter with three positions is placed between a light source and a DMD. The first position of the shutter is a mask, preferably an out of focus circle. This out of focus circle creates a circular mask and changes any unwanted dim reflection to a circular shape. The second position of the shutter is completely open, allowing substantially all the light to pass. The third position of the shutter is completely closed, blocking substantially all the light from passing. By controlling the penumbra illumination surrounding the desired illumination, DMDs can be used in illumination devices without creating undesirable rectangular penumbras.

Abstract: A polarized light source includes a diffuse light source and a reflective polarizing element placed proximate thereto. The reflective polarizing element transmits light of a desired polarization and reflects light of another polarization back into the diffuse source where it is randomized. Some of the initially rejected light is thus converted into the desired polarization and is transmitted through the reflective polarizing element. This process continues, and the repeated reflections and subsequent randomization of light of the undesired polarization increases the amount of light of the desired polarization that is emitted by the polarized light source.
