    Abstract: Gateways facilitate communication of voice traffic from a calling party to a called party over a packet network. To establish a communication session, an originating gateway sends one or more initial call control messages using overlap signaling to a destination gateway. The destination gateway may be unable to establish the communication session using overlap signaling. The destination gateway signals the originating gateway, such as by indicating that the communication session could not be established because of an incomplete or invalid destination address. The originating gateway then attempts to establish the communication session using en bloc signaling. In this way, an attempt that fails due to the use of overlap signaling is retried using en bloc signaling.

EOS instructions route the call to a POTS number in the originating LATA using an IntraLATA Carrier Identification Code. The POTS number is connected to a private gateway, which utilizes the Dialed Number Identification Service (DNIS) of the POTS number to perform a translation function, which may replace the received DNIS with the DNIS of the originally dialed TF number. The call routing program decodes the HTTP request and identifies the appropriate vendor-specific communication format and communications method for talking to the ICR system specified in the HTTP request. The call routing program sends the request and receives the answers from the ICR system in the vendor specific formats. The call routing program provides the ICR system response back to the voice program in a vendor neutral fashion. This approach allows voice programs to easily be written that work with multiple ICR systems and allow component reuse of call routing code amongst programs that end up working with multiple systems.
