The gradually decreasing depth has been found to alter the shadow characteristics of the embossing pattern thus creating a line in the embossing pattern that appears to decrease in line weight. The decrease in line weight is accomplished without having to change the width of the embossment, although the width can also be changed in conjunction with the depth. Being able to incorporate line weight variations into embossing patterns can dramatically improve the aesthetic appeal of the patterns.

A concave portion is formed, of the surfaces of the fluorescent member, on the surface on the side where the light in the semiconductor light emitting element is mainly emitted. In the fluorescent member, the light transmittance of the light having a wavelength of 380 nm to 500 nm may be less than 20%. The concave portion may be a groove. The concave portion may be a plurality of holes that are scattered.

Abstract: This invention relates generally to articles, devices, and methods for controlling the impingement behavior of molten metal/ceramic droplets on surfaces in industrial processes. The texture of a substrate surface is engineered such that impinging molten metal droplets actually bounce off the surface. Likewise, the texture of a substrate surface can be engineered such that impinging molten metal droplets stick to the surface.

Abstract: A glass substrate is held by a glass substrate holding member in the vertical direction, and a nozzle is used to eject an infrared cutoff liquid onto the upper portion of the glass substrate. The infrared cutoff liquid flows vertically downward so as to be applied onto the glass substrate. The film thickness of the lower portion of an infrared cutoff film is greater than that of the upper portion. The glass substrate is dried for approximately five minutes at room temperature. Then, the glass substrate onto which the infrared cutoff liquid has been applied is placed in an oven preheated to 200° C., heated for ten minutes, and then cooled. The glass substrate having the infrared cutoff film thereon is installed in a railroad vehicle such that the lower portion of the glass substrate is located on the lower side with respect to the railroad vehicle.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a patterned layer of compressive stress on a glass substrate includes forming a mask having predetermined pattern on a surface of the glass substrate. The pattern includes a plurality of hollow area and a shelter area The glass substrate is tempered by a chemical tempering process to form a layer retaining compressive stress on the uncovered area of the glass substrate surface so that the patterned layer of compressive stress is formed on the surface of the glass substrate. The patterned layer is formed to at least one surface of the glass substrate. The patterned layer has a plurality of area retaining different surface compressive stress. The patterned layer includes high stress areas separated by a low stress area. The surface compressive stress difference between the areas is larger than 100 MPa, or the depth difference between the areas is larger than 5 ?m.
