  • Patent number: 10232434
Abstract: An apparatus for casting metals by a nucleated casting technique to create a preform, the apparatus including a mold having a base and a side wall where the base can be moved relative to the side wall to withdraw the preform as it is being created. In various circumstances, portions of a droplet spray created by an atomizing nozzle, i.e., overspray, may accumulate on a top surface of the side wall and prevent or inhibit the preform from being moved relative to the side wall. The atomizing nozzle can be oriented such that the droplet spray passes over the top of the side wall to remelt and remove at least a portion of the overspray that has accumulated thereon. The mold can be rotated such that the overspray formed on a region of or on the entire perimeter of the top surface can pass through the droplet spray and can be removed from the side wall.

  • Patent number: 10177265
Abstract: An anisotropic conducting adhesive is improved in conductivity without increasing the density of admixed conductive particles by inducing metallic fusion between the surfaces of the conducting particles and the surfaces being bonded. The metallic fusion may be promoted by physical/chemical interaction characteristic of certain materials at a compressed interface; by compression sufficient to deform the conductive particles in a manner that increases the mechanical contact area; by heating (with or without melting of a material), which may also serve to cure the adhesive matrix; or by acoustic vibration, e.g., ultrasonic vibration. The resulting metallic-fusion joint is stronger, as well as more conductive, than a joint in which the particles and surfaces are held in unfused mechanical contact.

  • Patent number: 9700941
Abstract: A removed damaged portion of a fully consolidated turbine engine component is replaced with a powder coupon that includes powder particles that are at most partially sintered or are bonded together with a binder. A bonding agent is applied to the component and/or the powder coupon. The powder coupon is then positioned over the component and heat is applied to fully sinter the powder particles, thus causing the powder coupon to shrink onto the component. The heat also activates the bonding agent to bond the shrunken powder coupon to the component, but the heat does not sinter the material forming the fully consolidated component.

  • Patent number: 9005767
Abstract: A billet includes a solid steel body and an alloy cladding. The cladding may include a square tube in which the body is inserted with an interface at which the cladding becomes bonded to the body when the billet is heated and rolled or otherwise worked into a ferrous product. At least one element composed of a mass of finely divided scavenging aluminum, titanium or magnesium, is placed in the tube adjacent the body and separate from the interface. The elements are advantageously compressed into briquettes which scavenge oxygen from residual air at the interface to prevent oxidation of the cladding at the interface. The tube may be closed to prevent gases outside the billet from penetrating to the interface. Alternatively, reliance may be placed on the briquettes to scavenge oxygen from the residual air and also from atmospheric air and furnace gases before they can penetrate to the interface.
