Patent number: 6096385Abstract: A magnetic disk having improved tribological characteristics in the data zone of the disk surface while retaining a low sliding stiction in the landing zone is disclosed. It contains the conventional elements of a substrate, a magnetic recording layer, a protective overcoat, and a lubricant layer on the protective overcoat. However, the lubricant layer is UV irradiated under a photo mask to cause a radially inner zone and a radially outer zone. The photo mask is designed so that the radially outer zone of the lubricant layer has a ratio of bonded/unbonded lubricant molecules greater than that in the radially inner zone. The reduced proportion of mobile lubricant molecules in the data zone prevents the lubricant molecules from being collected by the magnetic head. On the other hand, a large proportion of the lubricant molecules in the landing zone remained mobile. This allowed the sliding stiction in the landing zone to stay at the desiredly low value.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1998Date of Patent: August 1, 2000Assignee: Trace Storage Tech. Patent number: 5455121Abstract: A steel material for colored springs is formed with a metallic deposit on the surface. The metallic deposit contains copper, zinc, and chromium. In an annealing process, copper and zinc diffuse in the deposit to exhibit a gold color tone while chromium is oxidized to exhibit a dark gray color tone. The combination of these color tones exhibits a beautiful black color tone which is distinguishable from a normal spring. The deposit improves the formability in the spring shaping process.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1994Date of Patent: October 3, 1995Assignee: Shinko Kosen Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Masao Yamada, Keiji Hattori, Hirofumi Ueki, Takashi Kubo

Patent number: 5413835Abstract: A magnetic recording medium includes a successively formed uneven underlayer and magnetic layer. In the process of forming the underlayer, grains of an alloy, whose melting point is in the range of approximately 100 degrees centigrade to approximately 350 degrees centigrade, are deposited on a substrate by using either an evaporation or a sputtering method, while maintaining the substrate temperature at a temperature which allows molten spheres of the alloy to be formed. The preferred alloys include Zn, Mg, Al, In, and Sn systems whose melting points fall within the above-mentioned temperature range. The preferred substrate temperatures are not higher than the melting point of the alloy to be deposited plus 50 degrees centigrade, and most preferably, temperatures equal to approximately the melting point of the alloy to be deposited minus 20 degrees centigrade. The result is a magnetic recording medium suitable for practical use which can be fabricated at a low cost.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1993Date of Patent: May 9, 1995Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yoshihiro Ikeda, Shinji Takayama

Patent number: 5405680Abstract: Selective emissivity coatings are disclosed for temperature reduction of enclosures such as vehicles and building structures. The coating includes a selective emissivity material such as silicon-oxy-nitride having a desired thermal emissivity function which is high in the 8-13 micron wavelength region, and low elsewhere except in the visible wavelength region. The material provides a mechanism for radiative cooling of the enclosure by converting the blackbody radiation of the enclosure, which would be reflected by the earth's atmosphere, into far infrared radiation which is transmitted by the atmosphere. According to another aspect of the invention, the coating further comprises a semimetal which is reflective of radiation in the near infrared region, thereby reducing the solar heat load on the enclosure. One suitable semimetal is LaB.sub.6. The coating may be applied to the exterior surface of vehicle and building windows, or to the exterior, non-window surfaces of building structures.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1994Date of Patent: April 11, 1995Assignee: Hughes Aircraft CompanyInventors: David B.
