Abstract: Flow cytometer systems are provided that mitigate aerosols generated during operation of a flow cytometer. A flow cytometer system can include various combinations of: a flow cytometer instrument base, a flow cytometer, and a biosafety hood (BSH). In some embodiments, a subject flow cytometer system includes a flow cytometer instrument base, a flow cytometer, and a BSH. In some embodiments, a subject flow cytometer system includes a flow cytometer instrument base and a flow cytometer. In some cases, a BSH includes an aerosol management system, which provides a redundant air filtration system. Also provided are components of a flow cytometer system (e.g., a BSH configured to attach to a flow cytometer instrument base, a flow cytometer instrument base configured to attach to a BSH, etc.). Also provided are methods, including methods of performing a flow cytometric procedure using a flow cytometer system; and methods of decontaminating a flow cytometer system.

Abstract: CD48, a surface-marker molecule present in eosinophils, is disclosed herein as a key molecule in allergic conditions, particularly in allergic airway inflammations like asthma, allergy and nasal polyposis. CD48 is thus presented as a target molecule in the treatment of said conditions. In addition, diagnostic methods, and a kit for the diagnosis of allergic inflammatory conditions are described, based on the detection of CD48 expression.

Abstract: A method for assessing risk of losing a transplanted organ by a patient having an episode of acute rejection of the transplanted organ is described. The method includes obtaining from the patient a cell sample from the transplanted organ or peripheral blood, determining a level of FOXP3 in the cell sample, and correlating the level with the risk of loss of the transplanted organ, wherein, compared to a control level, a significantly greater level of FOXP3 in the cell sample from the transplanted organ or a significantly lower level of FOXP3 in the cell sample from the peripheral blood correlates with a decreased risk of loss of the transplanted organ.
Abstract: A microfluidic device useable for performing live cell computed tomography imaging is fabricated with a cover portion including a first wafer with at least one metal patterned thereon, a base portion including a second wafer with at least one metal patterned thereon and negative photoresist defining recesses therein, and a diffusive bonding layer including a negative photoresist arranged to join the cover portion and the base portion. Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are provided for selectively altering the viability characteristics of a live cell. In some embodiments, an electrical signal acquisition array, electrically coupled to a high gain amplifier, is used in conjunction with an analog to digital converter and a computer to record natural electrical signals that a cell type may use to communicate with its neighbors, the immune system, and the organism in which it is operating, as well as the signals and waveforms that define its particular natural operational electrical signature. Specific parts of the recorded electrical signals that are determined to be relevant to specific behavior patterns are extracted from the recordings as discreet waveforms, loaded into an arbitrary waveform generator, and played back through either an electromagnetic radiating transducer or an electrical signal output array to apply electromagnetic energy to the cells to alter the electrical characteristics of a live cell.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method to label phospholipids in vivo based on the metabolic incorporation of an alkynyl- or azido-labeled metabolic precursor into phospholipids. The resulting phospholipids have alkynyl or azido moieties, which, upon reaction with a labeled azide or alkyne, respectively, form labeled compounds that can be visualized using optical or electron microscopy with high sensitivity and spatial resolution in cells or tissue. Abstract: A method and system is provided for evaluating viability of oocytes and embryos comprising imaging an oocyte or embryo using motility contrast imaging; generating temporal contrast and spatial contrast data for the cells; generating a cell viability value as a function of the temporal and spatial contrast data; and comparing the cell viability value to a predetermined value indicative of a cell suitable for use in an in vitro fertilization program.

Abstract: The apparatus for analyzing a disease sample according to the present invention includes: a member for separating and quantitatively determining an amino acid stereoisomer in a biological material from a subject; a member for obtaining a disease state index value through a calculation by substituting the amount of the amino acid stereoisomer into a discriminant equation; and a member for outputting disease state information on the subject on the basis of the disease state index value. Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for the prognosis and/or risk assessment and/or monitoring of therapy and/or management of patients with COPD the method comprising the steps of: i) providing a sample of a bodily fluid from said patient, ii) determining in said sample the level of at least one biomarker, selected from the group consisting of pro-adrenomedullin (proADM), pronatriuretic peptide, pro-Vasopressin (proAVP) and Procalcitonin (PCT) or fragments thereof of at least 12 amino acids in length, iii) determining one, two or three of the BODE-index parameters body-mass index (BMI, parameter B), degree of airflow obstruction (FEV1, parameter O), dyspnea (parameter D) and exercise capacity (parameter E), iv) correlating said level of said at least one biomarker determined in step ii), in combination with said one, two or three BODE-index parameters determined in step iii) to the prognosis and/or risk assessment and/or monitoring of therapy and/or management of patients with COPD.
