Abstract: System(s), method(s), and device(s) that enable release of backhaul capacity associated with base stations are presented. During soft handover, a communication device can have its connection maintained with more than one base station. A link controller component can identify a radio link having the highest quality and can determine the relative backhaul load of each base station communicating with the communication device. The link controller component determines whether the base station having the highest radio link quality is experiencing the heaviest backhaul load relative to the other base stations. If the base station with the highest link quality does not also have the heaviest backhaul load, the link controller component identifies the base station having the heaviest backhaul load and the identified base station can have its status modified with respect to the communication device for a desired period of time, in accordance with predefined status modification criteria.

  • Patent number: 8874127
Abstract: Compensation is provided for foreign interference within a cell. Uplink noise on an uplink channel to a first base station device is detected. Whether the uplink noise includes foreign interference is determined. Foreign interference can include any device other than a mobile device configured to communicate with a base station device associated with a cell. The first service area of the base station device can be modified, e.g., scaled based on determining that the uplink noise includes foreign interference. Scaling can include reducing the first service area to a second service area that does not include an imbalance region in the first service area caused by the foreign interference. Scaling can be effected by reducing the amount of downlink power from the first base station device, or by adjusting a re-selection parameter associated with reducing the range of the base station device.

Abstract: A method for handover in a telecommunication system is disclosed. The method determines a traffic time pattern in a handover situation where a user equipment is handed over from a source cell to a target cell in the telecommunication system. History information relating to a traffic time pattern used in the source cell by the user equipment being handed over is forwarded from a controller node of said source cell to a controller node of said target cell. In the target cell, a traffic time pattern to be used by said user equipment in said target cell after the handover is estimated by taking into consideration at least said history information.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for load balancing a serving subcell providing a data service to one or more user equipments in a cellular communication system are provided. The method includes calculating a load metric by using a radio resource occupation rate of data traffic in one or more scheduling types except for a Best Effort (BE) scheduling type, determining whether the serving subcell is in an overload state by using the load metric, and triggering a load balancing algorithm when it is determined that the serving subcell is in the overload state. Accordingly, the load metric used for load balancing may be defined to have a value closer to an actual free load, and thus the load balancing may be efficiently performed.

Abstract: Document discloses methods, systems and computer program products for dynamic mobile network traffic control. In an embodiment of the method comprises controlling data traffic (100) between a plurality of mobile terminals (102A, 102B, 104A, 104B) and a mobile network comprising a plurality of cell sites (110A, 110B, 110C). The method comprises monitoring cell-site-specific volumes of data traffic (100) in order to detect high-load cell sites (110A, 110B) among the plurality of cell sites. For each of the detected high-load cell sites, a mobile-terminal-specific analysis of data traffic (100) is performed in order to select at least one of the mobile terminals (102A, 102B, 104A, 104B) for traffic limitation. Thereafter, the data traffic (100) between the mobile network and the selected at least one mobile terminal (104A, 104B) is temporarily limited.

  • Patent number: 8831624
Abstract: A processor node stores and processes the last known location for certain mobile terminals to provide intermediate back-channel data in a form that is a function of whether the intermediate back-channel data is to be used in a situation that would encroach on information that might be sensitive to the subscriber or user of the mobile terminal, as viewed contractually, ethically or otherwise. If, for example, the subscriber or user of the mobile terminal has no such concerns (rights have been waived voluntarily by agreement with the wireless network operator or a third party, or involuntarily such as by a government mandate), the processor node generates location-identity-based back-channel data in a form that does not attempt to hide or code the user's identity and/or specific location. This form of (nonanonymized) data can be freely used internally by processor nodes internal to the wireless carrier as well as produced for review and analysis, such as demographic analytics, for use by a third party.

  • Patent number: 8830834
Abstract: Network topology independent service deployment techniques, referred to as overlay-based packet steering techniques, are provided. In one example, a server destined packet is intercepted by an in-path network device enabled as a service classifier. The service classifier encapsulates the packet and inserts the packet into a service path to a service virtualization endpoint front ending one or more service nodes. In other words, the service virtualization endpoint receives the service-directed packet on an overlay-based service path. The service-directed packet includes a service header and a service overlay tunnel encapsulation. The service virtualization endpoint inspects the service header in the service-directed packet to identify a first service node to which the service-directed packet should be forwarded and, based on the inspection, forwards the service-directed packet, on the overlay-based service path, to the first service node.

  • Patent number: 8824483
Abstract: A distributed switch may include a plurality of sub-switches. These sub-switches may be arranged in a hierarchy that increases the available bandwidth for transmitting multicast data frames across the switch fabric. Moreover, the distributed switch may be compatible with link aggregation where multiple physical connections are grouped together to create an aggregated (logical) link. Link aggregation requires similar data frames to use the same data path when traversing the distributed switch. With a unicast data frame, the sub-switch in the distributed switch that receives the data frame typically identifies the destination port (during a process called link selection) and forwards the data frame to the sub-switch containing that port. However, with multicast data frames, instead of the receiving sub-switch performing link selection to determine the destination port, link selection may be done by a different sub-switch or not done at all.

  • Patent number: 8824289
Abstract: A wireless device includes a data structure that relates peak channel capacity to the quality of the wireless communication link. The wireless communication link quality forms an index to indicate the expected peak channel capacity for that particular quality value of the wireless communication link. The wireless device uses the data storage structure to determine an expected data transfer throughput based on the quality of the wireless communication link. A transfer rate lower than expected may indicate congestion in the core network or the RAN. In this case, the network may slow the data delivery from the data source or temporarily suspend delivery. Conversely, low data throughput may be the result of a poor quality wireless communication link. If the data structure indicates that the data throughput corresponds to the expected throughput for the quality value of the wireless communication link, the system need not take any steps to reduce congestion.
