  • Patent number: 8681683
Abstract: Providing for inter-system idle mobility management for independent mobile networks is described herein. By way of example, registration of multiple mobile IP (MIP) addresses to a mobile device can be utilized to facilitate inter-system device tracking. An Internet Protocol (IP) home agent that serves the mobile device can associate the MIPs with a home IP address of the mobile device. When communication is received for the home address, device paging can be initiated by utilizing at least a plurality of the MIPs bound to the home address. A mobile device response can provide a current active network address, and the received communication can be delivered via such active network address. As disclosed herein, the mobile device can switch attachment among the networks without signaling such networks, based on the multiple address bindings. Accordingly, significant power reduction can be afforded to mobile devices in idle mode.

  • Patent number: 8676223
Abstract: System(s) and method(s) are provided for inter-cell interference management in a wireless communication system. A base station perform interference management by conveying and receiving load indicator messages over a backhaul communication link to disparate neighboring base stations that serve interfering mobile stations. Reporting of load indicators takes place according to a reporting policy that is event-based, and accounts for variations of interference metrics over available time-frequency resources. Communication with neighboring base stations is limited to a monitoring interference set, which can be determined statically, according to deployment characteristics of a wireless network, or the set can be adjusted dynamically according to a set of received UL signals or a set of DL CQI measurement reports. Reporting policy and interference set can be autonomously adapted to optimize backhaul traffic as well as interference control.

  • Patent number: 8660573
Abstract: A technique to allow a server such as a location server to throttle concurrent or closely timed location requests for the position of a given wireless device such that within a certain time period preferably only one location request will be initiated to the positioning engine and the remaining closely-timed location requests will be buffered or cached. When a position for the given wireless device is returned per the outstanding location request, then the retrieved position will be used to respond to each of the buffered location requests. Thus, a plurality of location requests are satisfied with a single request to the positioning engine. By optimizing the use of cached position requests, throttling of location requests per the invention reduces network traffic significantly, increases the efficiency of a positioning server (therefore reducing business cost), and provides for an improved grade or quality of location based services in general.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for requesting and allocating bandwidth in a broadband wireless communication system. The inventive method and apparatus includes a combination of techniques that allow a plurality of CPEs to communicate their bandwidth request messages to respective base stations. One technique includes a “polling” method whereby a base station polls CPEs individually or in groups and allocates bandwidth specifically for the purpose of allowing the CPEs to respond with bandwidth requests. The polling of the CPEs by the base station may be in response to a CPE setting a “poll-me bit” or, alternatively, it may be periodic. Another technique comprises “piggybacking” bandwidth requests on bandwidth already allocated to a CPE. In accordance with this technique, currently active CPEs request bandwidth using previously unused portions of uplink bandwidth that is already allocated to the CPE.

Abstract: A redirection method of a femto cell is provided together with a communication system based thereon. A serving gateway, connected with a specific femto cell, or an additional server determines whether there is a need for a redirection of the femto cell by using a load condition of the serving gateway or a target gateway. If the redirection is determined, the femto cell receives redirection instructions from the serving gateway to the target gateway and then the redirection is performed. Since the femto cell is redirected from the overloaded femto gateway to another femto gateway, the femto cell can continuously provide a communication service to user terminals.

  • Patent number: 8644841
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for dynamically adjusting a signal-to-noise (SNR) bias based on relative load between a macro type base station and a micro type base station of a wireless communication system. The SNR bias corresponds to a threshold differential SNR between SNRs of the macro base station and of the micro base station, wherein the SNR bias is configured to be provided to an access terminal (or user equipment) to cause the access terminal (i) to be biased to seek service from the micro base station if the access terminal detects an SNR from the micro base station that is less than the threshold differential SNR below an SNR that the access terminal detects from the macro base station, and (ii) to be biased to seek service from the macro base station otherwise. Once the SNR bias is determined based on the relative load, it is communicated to one or more access terminals.

Abstract: A method of allocating radio resources to communication links of a wireless communication system based on status parameters of each of the links, the communication system having a plurality of network nodes, a plurality of relays associated with the network nodes, and a terminal accessing the communication system. A first radio resource allocation may be determined by balancing the performance of a relay-to-network-node communication link of each relay against the performance of a corresponding terminal-to-relay communication link. A second allocation may be determined by balancing the performance of the relay-to-network-node communication link of each relay against the performance of a terminal-to-network-node communication link. A final allocation may be determined by calculating a weighted average value of the first and second allocations.

  • Patent number: 8625582
Abstract: A communication system is provided that routes a bearer path of a communication session between an originating Node B and a terminating Node B via an X2 interface, bypassing an IMS core network, while continuing to route the signaling path to an IMS network, thereby allowing the IMS network to retain control of the bearer path while avoiding delay, potential for data loss and jitter to the bearer stream, and additional backhaul capacity requirements that result from routing the bearer path between the originating and terminating Node Bs via the IMS core network. In determining whether the bearer path may bypass the IMS core network, the communication system determines whether IMS core network bearer associated services are required for the communication session such that a bearer path of the call will need to be routed to the IMS core network in order to provide such services.

Abstract: A base station determines occupancy of a channel used for message communication and transmits channel occupancy data to access terminals operable to transmit messages via the channel. An access terminal receives characters for sending a text message via the channel and determines whether the channel occupancy exceeds an occupancy threshold. If the channel occupancy exceeds the threshold, the access terminal transmits characters of the text message to the base station via multiple messages. Each of those messages including a number of characters that does not exceed a maximum number of characters associated with the threshold. If the channel occupancy does not exceed the threshold, the access terminal transmits characters of the text message to the base station via a single message so long as the number of characters does not exceed a maximum number of characters for sending a complete text message to the base station via a single message.
