Pulley With Belt-receiving Groove Formed By Drive Faces On Relatively Axially Movable Coaxial Confronting Members (e.g., Expansible Cone Pulley, Etc.) Patents (Class 474/8)
  • Patent number: 6461261
Abstract: An apparatus and a method control a continuously variable transmission of a motor vehicle which includes a power transmitting member for power transmission by use of friction. A controller of the apparatus detects slippage of the power transmitting member in a predetermined period of running of the vehicle, and increases a clamping pressure that is applied to the power transmitting member when slippage of the power transmitting member is detected. The controller also stores a state of increase of the clamping pressure in a memory, and increases the clamping pressure applied to the power transmitting member in accordance with a previous state of increase of the clamping pressure that was stored in the memory in a previous period of operation of the vehicle.

Abstract: Disclosed is a continuously variable transmission in which when a shaft torque is secured by the belt friction force generated by externally pressing a pulley, the disablement of transmission caused by a belt rolling-in phenomenon within a pulley resulting from instability of the friction force or the friction coefficient as the pressing force is applied, or the deterioration of efficiency caused by the short or surplus of the friction force of input and output pulleys in a big ratio area are overcome, as a consequence of which the stable friction transmission with high efficiency can be achieved without depending on the kind of belts such as a tension type or a compression type.

The belt can have a complementary angled surface also. The progressively variable angle allows the flange surface to more closely match the side surface of the belt, which can increase the belt life be reducing stress experienced by the belt. Abstract: The invention comprises a drive ring CVT belt. In a CVT transmission, each variable diameter pulley has a drive ring trained around the sheaves. Each drive ring may comprise any high modulus material such as plastic or metal. An endless flexible tensile member or belt is trained between the drive rings. Each drive ring further comprises a sleeve that is trained around an outer surface of each drive ring. Each sleeve slides in a bushing on its respective drive ring. The belt has a tensile load that presses each of the drive rings together on the sleeves. The relative arrangement of the axis of rotation of each drive ring is maintained by the contact between the sleeves and the drive rings. The effective diameter or radius of each pulley is adjusted by movement of each drive ring in each pulley. Movement of the pulley sheaves causes the axis of rotation of each drive ring to move eccentrically with respect to the axis of rotation of the pulley.

The speed selector is positioned corresponding to the desired lawn mowing apparatus ground speed. This creates tension in a cable which moves a control arm. Once the pulley assembly has been positioned, the effective belt diameter is set. The output pulley includes a first sheave fixed with respect to the shaft and a second sheave axially movable with respect to the shaft. A helix is mounted with respect to the shaft. In the improvement, a roller container is mounted for driven engagement with the shaft and such container has an interior surface with a plurality of helix-contacting devices, e.g., rollers, mounted adjacent thereto. The helix extends into the container and contacts the devices. In other aspects of the improved clutch, the roller container and the second sheave define a chamber and the helix-contacting devices are confined in such chamber.

Abstract: In a continuously variable transmission, a hydraulic actuator for axially moving a movable sheave has an outer cylinder which includes a radial portion extending radially from a boss on the stationary sheave. A bearing is disposed abutting the surface of the radial portion. The inner race of the bearing has a large diameter so that the inner race contacts at least a predetermined area of the surface of the radial portion, preferably, the entire area of that surface. One side of the inner race has a recess in which a nut for axially fixing the outer cylinder, the bearing and the like is disposed, thereby reducing the axial dimension of the continuously variable transmission.

Abstract: A powered concrete finishing trowel comprises a variable ratio drive train to power one or more revolving rotors. One or more internal combustion motors power two or more downwardly projecting rotors comprising blades that frictionally contact the concrete surface. The rotors are shaft driven by reduction gear boxes. By tilting the rotors steering forces are developed. A variable gear drive unit comprises a variable ratio pulley driven by the motor. A second pulley drives the gear box input shaft, with a drive belt entrained between the pulleys. A linear actuator projecting outwardly from a stationary mounting plate terminates at a bracket assembly whose opposite end is pivoted to a rigid stabilizer that structurally compliments the linear actuator, establishing a fulcrum action applied to the bracket center. The linear actuator deflects the bracket assembly to axially displace portions of the variable ratio pulley to change the effective pulley diameter.

Abstract: A fluid is guided inside a spool in which an orifice and drain holes are formed. The spool is displaced according to a hydraulic fluid pressure difference across the orifice. An outflow port, which is always connected with the orifice, and a drain passage, which overlaps with the drain holes according to a displacement position of the spool, are formed in the casing housing the spool. A stopper that limits the spool displacement beyond a position at which the overlap between the drain holes and drain passage is maximized is further provided. In this way, drainage of a fluid via the drain holes and drain passage is maintained at a maximum level even when fluid flows into the spool at a flow rate exceeding a predetermined level, and sharp increases of fluid flow rate from the orifice are thereby suppressed. By limiting excessive displacement of the spool, hysteresis is also prevented from occurring in the flow rate characteristics.

Abstract: In a metal V-belt type continuously variable transmission having a driving pulley and a driven pulley, the inclination angle .alpha. of a V-groove in the pulleys is set in a range represented by tan.sup.-1 .mu.a<.alpha.<tan.sup.-1 .mu.s, wherein .mu.s represents the static friction coefficient between the pulley and an endless belt, and .mu.a represents the dynamic friction coefficient between the pulley and the endless belt. In a conventional metal V-belt type continuously variable transmission, the inclination angle .alpha. is set in a range represented by .alpha.>tan.sup.-1 .mu.s. If the transmittable torque Tin is increased, the tensile force of the endless belt is increased to produce slipping between the endless belt and the pulley. However, according to the present invention, by decreasing the inclination angle .alpha. to reduce the tensile force of the endless belt, the transmittable torque Tin can be increased while preventing slipping of the endless belt.

Abstract: Variable effective diameter pulleys comprise identical interleaved sheaves mounted on identical hubs that in turn engage balls in key ways or splines. A single helical spring within the pulley assembly urges the hubs apart to thereby increase the effective pulley diameter. The pulley design is symmetric about the central pulley plane perpendicular to the axis of the pulley. In one embodiment all of the pulley parts with the exception of the spring and balls are conveniently formed with simple sheet metal stampings. Permanent assembly requires only circumferential external welding or circumferential mechanical fastening near the periphery of each sheave. In another embodiment the stamped parts may alternatively be die cast or otherwise formed and welded together. Both embodiments of the pulley are particularly suited to automated assembly and mass production.

In the second position, the drive system is moved a maximum amount about the drive shaft and is positioned to achieve a maximum speed. The drive system can also assume any intermediate position between the first and second positions, with the speed of the self-propelled device being determined by the amount of movement about the drive shaft toward the second position.
