These infections can be transmitted when drugs or other medical materials are delivered from a syringe system into an IV line through an IV port. Some current methods of preventing contamination include swabbing the syringe with alcohol or using disposable alcohol caps; however, these methods are often inefficient. A system is described using caps that cover the entry and exit points of the IV port and the syringe system, respectively. The caps can be temporarily displaced from the entry and exit points when a sufficient force is applied to an area far enough away from the entry and exit points so as to prevent contamination. Once the caps are displaced, the syringe system can interact with the IV port using a locking mechanism such as luer locks to ensure the stability of the connection.

A ring in the proximal portion is movable between a first position spaced from the ledge, and a second position adjacent to or abutting the ledge. A shield with at least one radially deformable tab receives the syringe and is movable in the sleeve between an initial position with the tab adjacent to or abutting the ledge, an injection position with the tab spaced from the ledge, and a protection position with the tab located distally from the ledge. The tab, during movement between initial and injection positions, deforms inwardly and traverses the inner surface of the ring, and during movement between injection and protection positions, translates with the ring from the first to the second position, and subsequently deforms inwardly and traverses the inner surface of the ring and the ledge.

When a user removes the distal cap, the needle shield remover reliably removes the needle shields (e.g., a soft needle shield and a rigid needle shield) from the syringe, thereby exposing the injection needle for performing an injection. In an exemplary assembly method, a needle shield remover is engaged to a needle shield coupled to a syringe, prior to insertion of the syringe and needle shield remover assembly into a housing of the device. This exemplary assembly method allows visual inspection, outside the housing of the device, to ensure that the needle shield remover is correctly and reliably engaged to the needle shield before the syringe and needle shield remover assembly is inserted into the housing.

    Abstract: A medicated module for an injection system to co-deliver at least two medicaments is disclosed where a primary delivery device containing a primary medicament accepts a medicated module containing a single dose of a secondary medicament and where both medicaments are delivered through a hollow needle. The medicated module is initially in a locked state until attached to a drug delivery where interaction of the cartridge holder with the module bypass housing changes the module to a triggerable state. The medicated module does not require the user to manually engage a reservoir containing the secondary medicament. Instead, a biasing member automatically activates the reservoir when the needle guard is retracted when the module is in the triggerable state. The needle guard prevents accidental needle sticks before and after an injection, and locks after removal from the injection site.
