Abstract: A safety scalpel that incorporates a reusable metal scalpel handle (500) similar in shape and feel to the conventional metal handle preferred by most surgeons, and a disposable blade cartridge (300) that covers the blade (100) before, during and after use, and is easily mounted and released from the scalpel handle. The blade cartridge includes a blade (100) with similar cutting profiles as standard surgical blades, a blade holder that is permanently fixed to the blade, and a blade guard (300) that covers the blade and within which the blade holder (200) is able to slide. The scalpel handle is reusable, while the blade cartridge is disposable. The blade cartridge is attachable and detachable from the scalpel handle and may include a mechanical brake (1301) to prevent movement of the blade except when the reusable handle is in place. A safety latch feature (2230) is provided.

  • Patent number: 9060806
Abstract: A device and method for opening blood vessel blockages, such as chronic total occlusions, is disclosed. The device has a main body and motor unit. The main body has an inner tubular member disposed inside an outer tubular member. The inner tubular member is reinforced with hydrophilic polymer coated wires, which are drawn out into two pairs of loops at the distal end of the device. The motor unit also has an inner tubular member disposed within an outer tubular member. The motor unit is used to create torque to rotate the main body having the pairs of loops. When torque transmitted to main body, the device spins. As the device is advanced through a blood vessel, the rotating loops penetrate and break down the occlusion, and recanalizes the blood vessel. Then device is then exchanged over a guidewire and further therapeutic interventions can be performed to improve blood flow.

  • Patent number: 9039731
Abstract: A forceps includes first and second jaw members and at least one handle movable between an open position and a closed position for moving the jaw members between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position. A ratchet mechanism includes first and second ratchet components configured to engage one another upon movement of the at least one handle to the closed position to retain the jaw members in the approximated position. A knife is selectively movable between a retracted position and an extended position, wherein the knife extends between the jaw members to cut tissue therebetween. A safety mechanism is configured to inhibit extension of the knife when the jaw members are disposed in the spaced-apart position. Movement of the ratchet components into engagement with one another to retain the jaw members in the approximated position disengages the safety mechanism, thereby permitting extension of the knife.
