Input/output Data Buffering Patents (Class 710/52)
  • Patent number: 8892716
Abstract: In one embodiment, a latency value is determined for an input/output IO request in a host computer of a plurality of host computers based on an amount of time the IO request spent in the host computer's issue queue. The issue queue of the host computer is used to transmit IO requests to a storage system shared by the plurality of host computers. The method determines a host specific value assigned to the host computer based in proportion on a number of shares assigned to the host in a quality of service policy for IO requests. The size for the host computer's issue queue is determined based on the latency value and the host specific value to control a number of IO requests that are added to the host computer's issue queue where other hosts in the plurality of hosts independently determine respective sizes for respective issue queues.

Abstract: An apparatus and method of page program operation is provided. When performing a page program operation with a selected memory device, a memory controller loads the data into the page buffer of one selected memory device and also into the page buffer of another selected memory device in order to store a back-up copy of the data. In the event that the data is not successfully programmed into the memory cells of the one selected memory device, then the memory controller recovers the data from the page buffer of the other memory device. Since a copy of the data is stored in the page buffer of the other memory device, the memory controller does not need to locally store the data in its data storage elements.

The efficient low latency buffer may be used as a bi-directional memory buffer in an audio playback device to buffer both output and input data. An application processor coupled to the bi-directional memory buffer is responsive to an indication to write data to the bi-directional memory buffer reads a defined size of input data from the bi-directional memory buffer. The input data read from the bi-directional memory buffer is replaced with output data of the defined size. In response to a mode-change signal, the defined size of data is changed that is read and written from and to the bi-directional memory buffer. An operating system may allocate a range of addresses in virtual address spaces and a range of addresses in a buffer mapped region of a physical (or main) memory. A request to read from, or write to, data by an application may be read from, or written to, the virtual address space. A memory management unit may then map the read or write requests from the virtual address space to the main or physical memory. Multiple applications may be able to operate as if each application has exclusive access to the accelerator and its buffer. Multiple accesses to the buffer by application tasks may avoid a conflict because the memory controller may be configured to fetch data based on respective application identifiers assigned to the applications. • Patent number: 8812754
Abstract: A network relay device includes a packet buffer for temporarily storing a received packet, and a packet buffer control section for changing an effective buffer number depending on the received amount of packet. When a traffic amount is small, the packet buffer control section reduces the power consumption by stopping the feeding of power or the supply of clock to a part of the packet buffers. The network relay device further includes plural table memories storing a table for deciding the transfer destination of packet, and a table memory control section for changing an effective table number according to a required number of table entries. When the required table entry number is small, the table memory control section reduces the power consumption by stopping the feeding of power or the supply of clock to a part of the table memories.

Abstract: A method for temporary storage of data units including receiving a first data unit to store in a hardware linked list queue on a communications adapter, reading a first index value from the first data unit, determining that the first index value does match an existing index value of a first linked list, and storing the first data unit in the hardware linked list queue as a member of the first linked list. The method further includes receiving a second data unit, reading a second index value from the second data unit, determining that the second index value does not match any existing index value, allocating space in the hardware linked list queue for a second linked list, and storing the second data unit in the second linked list.

  • Patent number: 8806541
Abstract: A system for a mobile wireless device to receive and display a video stream while preventing overflow or starvation of its receive buffer by requesting changes to the video streaming or encoding rates and by controlling the video playback frame rate. The current receive buffer level is used to make comparisons with several thresholds, the results of which are used to trigger actions. If the current receive buffer level has risen above a start level, then playback of the video can begin. If the current receive buffer level rises above an early detection threshold, then the video streaming device is requested to slow its streaming rate. If the current receive buffer level rises above a high level threshold, then the video streaming device is requested to stop streaming the video. If the current receive buffer level drops below a low level threshold, then the playback frame rate is slowed.

  • Patent number: 8806071
Abstract: A memory device includes a memory array, an output buffer, an initial latency register, and an output signal. Often times a host device that interfaces with the memory device is clocked at high rate such that data extraction rates of the memory device are not adequate to support a gapless data transfer. The output signal is operable to stall a transmission between the memory device and the host device when data extraction rates from the memory array are not adequate to support output rates of the output buffer.

  • Patent number: 8806143
Abstract: A method and apparatus for queuing FBNs of received write blocks for a file to a queuing data structure for assigning LBNs to the FBNs is described herein. A queuing data structure may comprise a modified binary search tree, such as a modified red-black search tree. Each node of a queuing data structure may comprise a base field for storing a base FBN and a range field for storing a range value comprising X bits. The range field of a single node may represent a range of two or more FBNs (“FBN range”), the FBN range being based on the base FBN. Each FBN in the FBN range may have a corresponding bit in the range field, the base FBN corresponding to a “base bit” in the range field. The value of the corresponding bit in the range field may indicate whether the FBN has been received.

  • Patent number: 8806090
Abstract: Memory system controllers can include hardware masters, first buffers, and a switch coupled to the hardware masters and to the first buffers. The switch can include second buffers and a buffer allocation management (BAM) circuit. The BAM circuit can include a buffer tag pool. The buffer tag pool can include tags, each identifying a respective first buffer or a respective second buffer. The BAM circuit can be configured to allocate a tag to a hardware master in response to an allocation request from the hardware masters. The BAM circuit can be configured to prioritize allocation of a tag identifying a second buffer over a tag identifying a first buffer.

  • Patent number: 8806089
Abstract: A traffic manager includes an execution unit that is responsive to instructions related to queuing of data in memory. The instructions may be provided by a network processor that is programmed to generate such instructions, depending on the data. Examples of such instructions include (1) writing of data units (of fixed size or variable size) without linking to a queue, (2) re-sequencing of the data units relative to one another without moving the data units in memory, and (3) linking the previously-written data units to a queue. The network processor and traffic manager may be implemented in a single chip.

  • Patent number: 8804507
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product for temporal-based flow distribution across multiple packet processors is presented. A packet is received and a hash identifier (ID) is computed for the packet. The hash ID is used to index into a State Table and to retrieve a corresponding record. When a time credit field of the record is zero then the time credit field is set to a to a new value; a Packet Processing Engine (PE) whose First-In-First-Out buffer (FIFO) has the lowest fill level is selected; and a PE number field in the state table record is updated with the selected PE number. When the time credit field of the record is non-zero then the packet is sent to a PE based on the value stored in the record; and the time credit field in the record is decremented if the time credit field is greater than zero.

  • Patent number: 8799535
Abstract: In one example, multimedia content is requested from a plurality of storage modules. Each storage module retrieves the requested parts, which are typically stored on a plurality of storage devices at each storage module. Each storage module determines independently when to retrieve the requested parts of the data file from storage and transmits those parts from storage to a data queue. Based on a capacity of a delivery module and/or the data rate associated with the request, each storage module transmits the parts of the data file to the delivery module. The delivery module generates a sequenced data segment from the parts of the data file received from the plurality of storage modules and transmits the sequenced data segment to the requester.
