  • Patent number: 6189426
Abstract: Methods of and apparatuses for mitigating chatter vibrations in machine tools or components thereof. Chatter therein is suppressed by periodically or continuously varying the stiffness of the cutting tool (or some component of the cutting tool), and hence the resonant frequency of the cutting tool (or some component thereof). The varying of resonant frequency of the cutting tool can be accomplished by modulating the stiffness of the cutting tool, the cutting tool holder, or any other component of the support for the cutting tool. By periodically altering the impedance of the cutting tool assembly, chatter is mitigated. In one embodiment, a cyclic electric (or magnetic) field is applied to the spindle quill which contains an electro-rheological (or magneto-rheological) fluid. The variable yield stress in the fluid affects the coupling of the spindle to the machine tool structure, changing the natural frequency of oscillation.

The device for boring the bearings has a boring bar that is supported only at opposite ends of the cylinder head. The bar does not sag or chatter because it is made of an extremely hard and dense material such as a dense tungsten alloy or a ceramic-coated metal.

Abstract: A brake lathe for drum and disc rotor brakes for grinding the inside cylindrical surface of a brake drum and machining the opposite parallel surfaces of a disc rotor. The lathe includes rotating spindle output shaft extending along an axis of the lathe housing. The spindle is driven by a motor which translates an endless belt over a V-belt pulley. A pair of cog belts respectively connect an intermediate pulley to the V-belt pulley and a taper lock bushing mounted on the spindle shaft. This arrangement reduces the motor speed to the desired spindle output speed and eliminates the need for an idler shaft. A first cross-feed slide is mounted in a direction transverse to the axis of the brake housing on a first side thereof for advancing the inboard and outboard cutters toward and away from the opposite parallel surfaces of a disc rotor concentrically mounted on the output shaft.

Abstract: A machine tool turret, usable in a machine tool having a rotatable workpiece spindle, that includes first and second tool spindles journaled on the turret. The turret is mounted for compound movement in an x-c plane defined by an x axis perpendicular to the c axis of the work spindle. Each tool spindle may be locked against rotation or, alternatively, it may be rotated. In either case, the operative position of each tool spindle may be used in the machining of a workpiece which also may be rotating or non-rotating. The turret axis is perpendicular to the x-c plane so that as the turret is rotated the tool spindles remain in this x-c plane for a plurality of operative positions for machining. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

Abstract: The process for securing a machine tool bed to a base includes the steps of providing a base having a horizontally disposed first surface wherein a plurality of cooperating grooves are disposed. A selected quantity of hardenable grout material is deposited into the grooves. A bed has a second surface from which a plurality of tongues extend, and each tongue has side surfaces which are relatively rougher than the associated distal surface. The bed is horizontally positioned above the base so that each tongue is received in an associated groove and each distal surface is spaced from the associated underlying groove, thereby causing the grout material to rise by an amount insufficient to contact the second surface. The bed is maintained spaced above the base until the grout material has hardened and thereby binds each side surface but not the associated distal surface to the base.

  • Patent number: 4939962
Abstract: In connection with machine tools it is frequently necessary to directly couple the motion sequence of a tool carrier and thus of the tool carried by the tool carrier, to the r.p.m. of a work piece, in order to perform certain motion sequences for each revolution of the work piece. In connection with machine tools in which the r.p.m. of the work piece depends on the work piece diameter, for example, in underfloor wheel set turning machines or turning machines, the r.p.m. is not known. Additionally, the unknown r.p.m. changes during the work piece machining. In order to achieve a synchronization in spite of the changing unknown r.p.m., the time necessary for performing one revolution of the work piece is measured and the time measurement is converted into a control signal for influencing the motion of the movable member such as the tool carrier in such a way that the motion of the tool carrier is influenced as a function of the measured time duration.

Abstract: A center-drive lathe has a longitudinally elongated machine base having a front, a back, and a pair of longitudinally spaced ends. A centerstock is generally centrally mounted on the front of the base and a pair of guides on the front of the base extend longitudinally at least from the centerstock to the ends of the base. Abstract: An arrangement for centering and clamping of work pieces comprises tension levers swingably supported on a base plate, the tension levers of which are arranged coaxially on a pivot, while the other tension lever is supported on a second pivot which has the same distance to the center of the arrangement as the hinge pin. The contact surfaces with which the tension levers grasp a work piece, are designed so that the perpendicular line extends on the particular tangent at the contact point between contact surface and work piece through the center of the arrangement. This forces the work piece, independently of its diameter, continuously into the center in the clamping process and, consequently, centers it. Due to the arrangement of the tension levers, inserting work pieces transversely to the chuck axis is possible in spite of the center clamping process.
