Rotatable Type Patents (Class 83/663)
  • Patent number: 5167968
Abstract: Apparatus (30) for finishing a blow molding (24) is disclosed as including a rotary head (42) on which a first knife holder (44) is provided for mounting a knife (46) for radial movement with respect to the rotational axis (A). A second knife holder is mounted in a diametrically opposite relationship to the first knife holder and actuated so as to maintain a balanced relationship during rotation of the rotary head. An actuating mechanism (48) actuates the knife holder (44) to move the knife (46) radially inward with respect to the rotational axis (A) during rotation of the head (42) to cut the blow molding received thereby and thereby provide finishing that removes excess material. The actuating mechanism (42) is preferably constructed as a cam actuator (50) including a cam follower (56) and a cam (58) that operate after a first portion (52) of the rotary head (42) is stopped from continued axial movement as a second portion (54) of the rotary head continues to be moved axially during the rotation.

  • Patent number: 4934231
Abstract: A rotary die-cutting apparatus having cylindrical rollers mounted for rotation on spaced parallel axles. Die plates are mounted on the rollers in tight surface-to-surface contact with the outside surfaces thereof. Each roller has a body with a generally cylindrical outside surface and two longitudinal channels formed therein. The die plates are formed as thin flexible sheets of metal having their ends welded to one of the bars for mounting the sheets on the outside surface of the rollers. A wedge-shaped bar is slideably mounted in the other channel. After the ends of the die plate are welded to the weld bar in butting relation, the die plate is mounted on the roller with the wedge bar removed from its associated channel. After the plate is mounted on the roller, the wedge bar is slid into the channel and gradually forced against the die plate to bring it into surface-to-surface contact with the roller.

  • Patent number: 4878407
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mounting a die, particularly a rigid cutting die, on a die cylinder includes having a bubble along a seal on the die to bridge any gaps between the die and the die cylinder when the die is initially positioned on the die cylinder. This bubble seal enables a vacuum to be applied between the initially positioned die and the die cylinder to pull the die down against and into conformity with the surface of the die cylinder, at the same time flattening the bubble seal. A key at a trailing edge of the die locates in an axial keyway in the die cylinder to circumferentially position the die; a bolt is then inserted at a leading edge of the die to establish axial location. During operation the die is held in position by the vacuum. Beam sensors and light reflectors may be incorporated to sense when a wrong die is present and shut down the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4706531
Abstract: Device for cutting band-shaped or strand-shaped material, having a cutting device in the form of a cutter roller, in which outwardly-pointing cutting edges which are arranged at a uniform distance from one another connect two circular disc-shaped or annular bodies to one another, which bodies hold the cutting edges, and the material to be cut via these cutting edges forms a lap superimposed in several coil layers, the radial innermost position of which lap is cut by the pressure which acts in intensified manner as a result of a loading body. The cutter blades, the cutting edges of which cut the material, are arranged for reducing the bending stress in such a way that they are at a setting angle alpha of 5.degree. to 25.degree. to the radial direction of the device, with the cutting edges pointing in the direction of movement of the cutter roller.

  • Patent number: 4660453
Abstract: The subject invention involves equipment for precision size reduction of a product, such as cutting string beans lengthwise into strips. More particularly, the invention is directed to improvement in the structure of a circular knife including a novel method of making its peripheral cutting edges by reducing the number of operations required to produce the knife. Previously, as presently known, the peripheral cutting edges of circular knives involves the expense of individually cutting material out of a peripheral area as compared to the unique method of the subject invention which simultaneously shears and forms offset portions and radial portions, and wherein the outer knife ends of these portions are simultaneously sharpened by a common bevel which causes the edges of the sharpened ends of the offset portions to be inset with reference to the sharpened ends of the radial portions. These two significant factors in the manufacture of circular knives constitute a meritorious advance in the art.

Abstract: A device for cutting successive sheets from a traveling web includes a pair of thin-walled knife-carrying cutting cylinders concentrically mounted over fixed supporting shafts. To prevent ringing of the shafts at high cutting frequencies, due to resonant frequency interference, each support shaft is formed by a body having an inperforate cylindrical wall. The cylindrical wall of the support shaft is closed at both ends to form an uninterrupted cylindrical cavity extending from end to end of the cylindrical wall. Furthermore, and to prevent poor cuts due to changes in the alignment of the cutting knives, the amplitude of vibrations occurring at the time of each cut is reduced. Abstract: A method of sawing a wooden workpiece makes simultaneous use of a chip cung operation with chip cutting saw teeth provided along the leading edge of a saw blade and a cutting operation with knife edges provided on the same leading edge of the saw blade. Between each pair of adjacent chip cutting saw teeth on the leading edge of the saw blade a knife edge, also provided on the leading edge of the saw blade, is fed into the workpiece together with the saw teeth in a plane located within the kerf made by the saw teeth and in such a position relative to the saw teeth that this knife edge cuts into the workpiece or at least into the chip, which still adheres to the workpiece and is being formed by the one saw tooth, and cuts this chip into two portions, which when liberated from the workpiece under the action of the saw tooth are distributed on opposite sides of the saw blade into the clearances between the side surfaces of the saw blade and the wall of the kerf.
