  • Patent number: 7299727
Abstract: A saw blade has a saw body and a cutting edge for cutting during movement of the saw blade. A lubricating guide support has a bearing surface disposed immediately adjacent the saw body for proper alignment of the saw blade during cutting. The guide support contains liquid exposed to the saw body at the bearing surface. The saw body defines a plurality of cavities whereby the liquid is applied to the saw body as it passes by the bearing surface during movement of the saw blade. Each one of the cavities is arranged to pass by the exposed liquid and is dimensioned to receive liquid therein for transport. The saw body has an axial thickness no greater than 0.08 inches. The liquid transport cavity has a triangular cross-section with a trailing edge oriented at an approximate negative 5 degrees to a radius of the saw body.

  • Patent number: 7249552
Abstract: A guide for use with a cutting member, such as hand saws, that is easy to use, is readily portable and can be adjusted to permit cutting of precise compound angles on work pieces of various configurations. The guide mechanism comprises two angularly related members arranged so that when one member engages the face of a work piece, the other member functions to glidably engage a cutting member, such as the blade of a hand saw with the teeth thereof in cutting relation with said face of the work piece. In one form of the invention, locking mechanisms are provided to lock the member in any selected angular relation and a magnet is carried by the guide member which uniquely functions to continuously urge the saw into engagement with a plurality of rollers that are also carried by the guide member.

  • Patent number: 7159498
Abstract: The invention relates to an improved miter box for guiding a handheld portable circular saw. The miter box facilitates several conventional workpiece trim cuts using a handheld portable circular saw, including 45 degree and 90 degree straightcuts, as well as 45 and 90 degree straightcuts with a 45 degree undercut. The invention includes an I-beam that is formed from a rigid base plate having opposing first and second base plate edges disposed along its elongated length. A first and second flange can be respectively attached to the opposing first and second base plate edges. Each of the flanges can include a pair of opposing support faces. One or more transverse guide members can extend either 45, 135, or 90 degrees from one support face of the first flange to another support face of the second flange. The transverse guide member(s) and the support faces provide a friction reduced medium by which the bottom of a handheld portable circular saw's shoe can glide with greater ease and stability.

  • Patent number: 7127978
Abstract: A circular saw machine having a saw blade (1) that is movably held for back and forth motion during the sawing process. A forward and a rearward saw blade guide (4, 5) ensure the stability of the saw blade (1) while sawing. The saw blade guides (4, 5) respectively have contact surfaces (6), which abut on the respective side surfaces of the saw blade (1). In order to operate the circular saw machine with different saw blade diameters, the forward saw blade guide (5) is removable from, or pivotable away from, the saw blade (1), and the saw blade itself is interchangeable. The radial positioning of the contact surfaces (6) of the saw blade guides (4, 5) is variable. This can be accomplished by interchanging the whole saw blade guide (5), but also in particular by a mounting (12), pivotable with respect to the saw blade guide (4, 5) and to which the contact surface (6) is fixed.

Abstract: A saw having a self-pumped hydrodynamic blade guide or bearing for retaining the saw blade in a centered position in the saw kerf (width of cut made by the saw). The hydrodynamic blade guide or bearing utilizes pockets or grooves incorporated into the sides of the blade. The saw kerf in the workpiece provides the guide or bearing stator surface. Both sides of the blade entrain cutting fluid as the blade enters the kerf in the workpiece, and the trapped fluid provides pressure between the blade and the workpiece as an inverse function of the gap between the blade surface and the workpiece surface. If the blade wanders from the center of the kerf, then one gap will increase and one gap will decrease and the consequent pressure difference between the two sides of the blade will cause the blade to re-center itself in the kerf.

Each miter arm has a complementary base resting underneath and being guidably received by each miter arm, thereby allowing each miter arm to reciprocate along its complementary base.

Abstract: A guide for the blade of a band saw providing support for the rear edge and sides of the blade. The guide utilizes two cylindrical rings or anvils that may be adjusted to contact the sides of the blade. A rotating spool within the anvils provides the support for the rear edge of the blade. The spool may be easily adjusted to provide support for blades of varying depth. The entire guide may be mounted on the guide arm of most band saw blades and pivoted into position through the use of an adjustable saddle.

Abstract: A guide block is provided for supporting a blade within a saw, such as a band saw, the guide block being formed from a ceramic material. A ceramic material is provided in powder form initially and is pressed into a billet of compressed ceramic powder. This billet of compressed ceramic powder is machined into a desired shape for the guide block but oversized in all of its dimensions by an oversized percent similar to an amount of shrinkage experienced by that ceramic material upon firing into a final hardened state. The machined compressed powder billet forms a pre-firing guide block which is fired at sufficient temperature and for sufficient duration so that it achieves its final hardened state as a ceramic guide block having dimensions precisely matching those of a prior non-ceramic guide block being replaced. The ceramic guide block can then be substituted into the saw for use in supporting the saw blade.

The circular saw blade includes a saw plate having openings formed therein and carbide insert teeth disposed circumferentially about the saw plate. The lubricating guide support assembly includes two guide supports each having a bearing surface disposed immediately adjacent opposite sides of the saw plate at a spacing to the cutting area for proper alignment of the saw blade during cutting. At least one of the guide supports includes a recessed area containing liquid exposed to the saw plate whereat a thin film of the liquid is applied to the saw plate as it passes by the recessed area during cutting. The openings are arranged on the saw plate to pass by the recessed area and are dimensioned to receive liquid therein for transport away from the recessed area.

Abstract: A sawguide assembly includes a set of sawguides positioned adjacent to one another to create an array of laterally-abutting sawguides. A sawguide biasing assembly biases the sawguides against one another. The array is supported for movement along a lateral path generally parallel to the axis of the arbor. A lateral driver is used to move the entire array in unison along the lateral path. A sawguide array skewing assembly couples the sawguides to one another so that the sawguides can be pivoted in unison about their respective pivot axes by a skewing driver.

Abstract: A punch and die set is provided for use in a stamping press having a punch assembly and a die assembly reciprocated by a driving mechanism. The punch and die assemblies are aligned to a common center and are structured to slidably engage one another for positive guidance of the punch and die tools without the need for other guidance by shafts, bars or the like. One of the punch assembly and die assembly can be non-fixedly carried by the drive mechanism, allowing the guidance of the engaged punch and die assemblies to define the relative positions of the tools. This arrangement eliminates any stack-up of tolerances between the assemblies and substantially reduces misalignment during stamping, including any misalignment that may be introduced by the press driving mechanism.

Abstract: An arbor for a guided circular saw has three symmetrical lobes. The lobes have end regions with profiles which follow an arc centered on an axis of rotation of the arbor. The lobes have driving regions with profiles which follow the arc of a circle centered in an opposing lobe. A saw for use with the arbor has an eye with a shape which follows the contour of the arbor. The saw is capable of floating axially along the arbor. The saw and arbor can be used to advantage in sawing machines such as edgers. The arbor provides a much larger saw contact area than do prior art arbors. In one embodiment of the invention the saw is mounted between a pair of spaced apart collars on the arbor. The collars guide the saw but are not tightly clamped to the saw.
