Abstract: Tetraphenyl siloxanes having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.4 can be hydrogen or lower alkyl, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 can be hydrogen, phenyl or lower alkyl and n is 0 or 1, when added to methyl alkyl siloxane lubricants for high-density information discs, improve the playback performance of the discs.
Abstract: A method of bonding photodetector devices to heatsinks, which devices can be damaged above 250.degree. C., using a gold-tin eutectic solder which has a melting point of 280.degree. C., is disclosed. The process comprises heating the heatsink and solder past the solder melting point on a quick thermal response heating element, turning off the heating power, and introducing the chip into the liquid solder on the cool down cycle. By controlling the rate at which the heatsink solder and device cool down and the time span from introduction of the chip to solidification of the solder, the chip can be exposed to sufficient heat to provide a good thermal, electrical and physical bond while substantially enhancing the yield of electrically undamaged photodetector chips.
Abstract: A chuck is shown for holding a stylus during manufacturing of the stylus. The invention includes a method of aligning the chuck and apparatus therefor. The chuck comprises a body and a stylus holder both of which are held separately in mutual alignment in the alignment apparatus. Epoxy is injected into a cavity of the body and the stylus holder inserted into the cavity while maintaining this mutual alignment. The epoxy, being somewhat displaced by the stylus holder, flows about the outer surface of the stylus holder completely filling the space between the two parts. When the epoxy cures, the finished chuck is removed from the alignment apparatus.
Abstract: The resistance between a conductive contact and a region of relatively high conductivity in a body of semiconductor material is lowered by forming the high conductivity region by implanting ions of a desired conductivity type into the semiconductor body through a layer of a material which is electrically innocuous in the semiconductor body and is substantially oxygen free in the layer and at the interface between the layer and the semiconductor body. The layer is applied to the body by first removing any oxide from the surface of the body in an oxygen free ambient and immediately applying the layer to the body while maintaining the oxygen free ambient.
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for trimming flash from molded thermoplastic records. The records which are advantageously trimmed using the apparatus of this invention have the flash secured to the outer diameter of the molded record with a web having a thickness which is substantially less than the thickness of the molded record and the principle portion of the flash. The apparatus of this invention has a rotatable turntable means for holding a record to be trimmed and a focused infrared heating means positioned relative to the turntable so as to selectively heat and soften the web prior to trimming. The softening of the web facilitates trimming the flash and the final finishing of the molded thermoplastic record.
Abstract: An improved method of grounding a pellet mounting pad is disclosed wherein the ground wire is bonded to one of the structural support members of the mounting pad rather than to the surface of the pad itself.
Abstract: A cathode head assembly is provided for holding a matrix during electroforming of a replica on the surface of the matrix. The cathode head assembly has a support member with an outer diameter at least as large as the matrix to be replicated; a compressable seal member positioned about the outer diameter of the support member; an outer ring member having means for engaging the seal member and having an inside diameter slightly larger than the outer diameter of the support member and a means for locking the outer ring in a position when the seal is held against the outer ring in compressed sealing engagement with a matrix mounted on the support member.
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for use in trimming of flash from molded thermoplastic records. The records which are advantageously trimmed using the apparatus of this invention have the flash secured to the outer diameter of the molded record with a web having a thickness which is substantially less than the thickness of the molded record and the principal portion of the flash. The apparatus of this invention has a turntable for holding the record during trimming and a manifold means for directing a heated gas over the web so as to selectively heat and soften the web thereby facilitating the trimming of the flash and final finishing of the outer diameter of the record.
Abstract: An improved method for lapping the facets on a hard material such as a diamond provides faster machining and reduced crystallographic sensitivity. The improved method uses a lapping disc coated with an abrasive slurry, which lapping disc comprises a ternary alloy of aluminum, silicon and iron, and which alloy may be oxidized for even further enhanced lapping of the diamond.
Abstract: An improved method of forming a patterned layer of metallization on a substrate having topographical features is provided. A layer of a polymeric lift-off material is initially spin-coated onto the substrate, and a layer of a polymeric planarizing material spin-coated thereover. The dry etch rate of the lift-off layer is at least 1.2 times faster than that of the planarizing layer thereby forming a reverse slope wall profile in openings etched through both layers. A patterned hardmask layer is suitably used to dry etch the planarizing and lift-off layers, preferably in an oxygen-containing plasma. A layer of metallization is then deposited thereon. The metal in the openings is discontinuous from that deposited over the hardmask because of the reverse slope wall profile of the openings in the planarizing layers. The structure is then contacted with an organic solvent which penetrates to the base of the lift-off layer, again due to the reverse slope wall profile.
Abstract: An apparatus for guided free fall impact testing of aerodynamically unstable disc shaped articles such as molded records. The apparatus has a vertical guide means which has guide rails and guide slides for correcting attitude deviations from the vertical of a disc shaped article as it free falls through the guide means. The apparatus also includes means for releaseably securing a disc shaped article at a preselected height. The apparatus also includes a contact plate for terminating the free fall of the disc shaped article and imparting the resulting impact force at a point on the outer diameter of the article.
Abstract: A preform for use in making a video recorded disc in a body of plastic material having substantially flat top and bottom surfaces and a peripheral surface extending between the top and bottom surfaces. The peripheral surface includes a first portion intermediate the top and bottom surfaces and of a peripheral size greater than that of the top and bottom surfaces. Second and third portions extend from the first portion to the top and bottom surface, respectively. Each of the second and third portions has a peripheral dimension which decreases from that of the first portion to that of the top or bottom surface so that the surface of each of the second and third portions is angled away from the top and bottom surfaces, respectively. When the preform is engaged by the molds for making a disc the angled surfaces of the second and third portions serve to minimize if not eliminate the trapping of air and gasses along the surface of the record being formed which cause defects in the record surface.
Abstract: A conductive molding composition for the preparation of high density capacitance electronic discs is disclosed. The improved composition contains only five ingredients and is characterized by superior playback without the necessity of washing the disc after pressing. The subject compositions contain as a dispersant isopropyl tri(dioctylpyrophosphato)titanate. Preferred compositions are additionally comprised of poly(vinyl chloride), conductive carbon black, diundecyl phalthalate as a plasticizer and a tin mercaptoester or tin alkyl mercaptide stabilizer.

Abstract: A photodetector including a light transmissive electrically conducting layer having a textured surface with a semiconductor body thereon. This layer traps incident light thereby enhancing the absorption of light by the semiconductor body. A photodetector comprising a textured light transmissive electrically conducting layer of SnO.sub.2 and a body of hydrogenated amorphous silicon has a conversion efficiency about fifty percent greater than that of comparative cells. The invention also includes a method of fabricating the photodetector of the invention.
Abstract: A vertical MOSFET device includes a major surface having an active, gate-controlled portion adjacent to an inactive portion. A gate-controlled perimeter channel is disposed at the boundary between the active and inactive portions.

Abstract: A vertical IGFET device is formed on a substrate which includes a monocrystalline silicon portion at a surface thereof. An apertured insulated gate electrode is disposed on the substrate surface such that an area of monocrystalline silicon is exposed through the aperture. An epitaxial silicon region extends from the substrate surface within the gate electrode aperture and is appropriately doped such that a predetermined voltage applied to the insulated gate electrode forms a channel region in the epitaxial region adjacent thereto. The vertical IGFET is fabricated by a self-aligned technique, wherein the insulated gate electrode includes a first, underlying insulating layer and a second, overlying insulating layer. The second insulating layer protects the gate electrode when the first insulating layer is defined.

Abstract: A composition providing effective electromagnetic/radio frequency interference (EMI/RFI) shielding is disclosed. The composition comprises a plastic material, preferably a thermoplastic resin, suitable additives such as lubricants, stabilizers and the like, and a conductive component consisting of a mixture of finely divided conductive carbon black and graphite.
Abstract: A lenticular array suitable for CCD stripe filters is made by anisotropically etching a V-shaped groove in a 100 silicon wafer wherein the walls of the V-grooves are made by intersecting 111 planes, replicating the V-grooves in metal to form an inverted V-master and spin coating a hardenable resin thereon to form a uniform array of lenses between the peaks.
Abstract: A method of determining the crystalline or structural quality of phase transformable material such as silicon uses light scattering. The material is exposed to a beam of light of a selected wavelength. Scattered light having an intensity above a threshold is detected to provide a signal which is used to control the intensity of a display beam of a visual display device. The threshold is varied to thereby vary the display beam intensity so as to provide the minimum intensity of display beam which yields a full display. The value of the thusly adjusted threshold intensity is used as a direct measure of the structural quality of the material.The light scattering process is used to determine the phase of deposited material.A layer of silicon material annealed from as-deposited amorphous phase material is easily and quickly distinguished from material as-deposited crystalline phase material and subsequently annealed.
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for the controlled deposition of a layer of hydrogenated amorphous silicon on a substrate. Means is provided for the illumination of the coated surface of the substrate and measurement of the resulting photovoltage at the outermost layer of the coating. Means is further provided for admixing amounts of p type and n type dopants to the reactant gas in response to the measured photovoltage to achieve a desired level and type of doping of the deposited layer.
