The method involves obtaining a sample from the process which is such that little or no live examples of the microorganism remain. However because DNA from the organisms is still present, an analysis which identifies portions of DNA specific to the particular organism will correctly identify the microorganism present. This allows for analysis of infestations present on felts or paper sheets which typically no longer have many live microorganisms on them when samples are taken for analysis.

Abstract: Wiping products, such as facial tissues, contain an interior temperature change composition and an exterior hydrophilic lotion composition that can provide a cooling sensation when contacted with the skin of a user. The temperature change composition, for instance, can contain one or more phase change agents that undergo a phase change at slightly elevated temperatures. The phase change agents, in one embodiment, can have a relatively high heat of fusion. When undergoing a phase change, the phase change agents absorb heat and thereby provide a cooling feeling to the skin of a user. The hydrophilic lotion composition may contain a carrier and a thermo-reversible gelling agent. The hydrophilic lotion composition maintains the temperature change composition within the tissue and helps to prevent skin irritation.

  • Patent number: 8425723
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of efficiently maintaining or increasing brightness and whiteness of refined paper. In one aspect, the invention is directed to a method for substantially maintaining (or even increasing) brightness and/or whiteness of paper with increased pulp refining, the method including refining the pulp down to reduce the freeness at least about 100 CSF and adding a combination of an OBA and a carrier polymer to the paper surface in the size press in amounts sufficient to increase brightness and/or whiteness of the final paper. In another aspect, the invention is directed to a method of making paper from refined pulp that includes refining a cellulosic fiber suspension to reduce the freeness at least about 100 CSF and contacting the cellulosic fibers with at least one optical brightening agent (OBA) during or after the refining step prior to adding any additional wet end chemicals.

  • Patent number: 8414739
Abstract: There is provided a filled paper containing a coated filler obtained by coating a filler with a acrylamide copolymer (composite PAM) comprising (A) an anionic polysaccharide and (B) a cationic and/or an amphoteric acrylamide copolymer. The composite PAM is obtained, for example, by mixing the component (A) and the component (B). Since the filler is treated with a combination of the components (A) and (B) different from each other in charge properties and structure, suitable coagulation effect can be attained and the coated filler has excellent affinity for pulp slurry. Therefore, even in the case of a highly filled paper, a large paper strengthening effect can be attained by using a small amount of the chemical agent.

  • Patent number: 8404084
Abstract: A filler treatment process enhances the fixation of anionic latex on filler in a short time. Anionic polymer dispersions (latex) are added to papermaking filler slurries at ambient temperature and then mixed with water of temperature higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the latex used. The anionic latexes applied by this process are totally and irreversibly fixed or bound onto the filler particles and the treated filler particle agglomerate to form an aggregated filler slurry which is stable over time. The latex-treated filler slurry can be added to papermaking furnishes at any point prior to the headbox of the paper machine or stored for later use. The latex-treated filler slurry improves filler retention, only slightly reduces sheet strength and improves sizing performance.

Abstract: Formulations and methods for papermaking are disclosed herein using one or more volatile debonders, where the volatile debonder forms a solution or an emulsion with water in a paper precursor, and where the volatile debonder is evaporable from the paper precursor before the paper precursor is completely dried to form a paper sheet during papermaking. Two volatile debonders having different boiling points can be used, where they are miscible in water and in each other, and where one volatile debonder has a higher molecular weight and the other volatile debonder has a lower boiling point.
