Patent number: 6640988Abstract: A closure for a container with a neck portion and an external helical thread formed on the neck portion includes an upper wall and a skirt formed integrally with and extending generally downwardly from the upper wall. An internal helical thread is formed on the skirt for engaging the external helical thread of the neck portion to thereby secure the closure to the container. The internal helical thread is preferably asymmetrical in cross section. A first annular seal extends generally radially inwardly toward a central axis of the closure from the inner skirt surface. The first annular seal sealingly engages the outer surface of the neck portion. A second annular seal extends generally axially downwardly from the upper wall and sealingly engage an inner surface of the neck portion. A thickness of the neck portion between the first and second annular seals is greater than the distance between the first and second annular seals before installation of the closure on the container.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2002Date of Patent: November 4, 2003Inventor: Saad Taha

Patent number: 6637611Abstract: A tamper-evident, snap-on, screw-off closure is used with a specially shaped container neck. One neck has double lead external threads and, below the threads, a conical wall having external ratchet teeth. The closure has an upper skirt having internal threads mating with the neck threads. A conical lower skirt is connected to the upper skirt by a plurality of frangible bridges. The lower skirt has internal ratchet teeth to mate with the neck ratchet teeth. The cap skirt threads are double pitch and slightly over 360° in length. When the cap is applied to the neck it snaps on in two stages. The lower skirt has a tear tab which, when pulled, fractures the lower skirt on a vertical line. Continued pulling on the tab sequentially fractures the bridges. Another neck has a neck stretch with multiple neck threads and a locking wall below the neck stretch with a plurality of external teeth.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2002Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: Portola Packaging, Inc.Inventor: Daniel Luch

Publication number: 20030141269Abstract: A letter or number shaped bottle (10) that is filled with a potable fluid (80) such as a natural-spring drinking water or a fruit juice. The letter bottles are constructed of hollow letter shaped structures (12) that range from A to Z, and the number bottles are constructed of hollow number shaped structures (14) that range from 1 to 0, The hollow structures (12, 14) each include an upper bottle opening (36) having integrally attached a tubular neck (38) to which is releasably attached a bottle cap (50) which when removed, the fluid (80) in the bottle can be consumed. Before or after the fluid is consumed the letter bottles can be used as a teaching aid to teach individuals, and particularly school-age children, the alphabet. Likewise, the number bottles can be used to teach correct number sequencing. The invention also includes a tray (70) that allows a set of letter (12), number (14), and/or punctuation mark (15) bottles to be stored or displayed in selected arrangements.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 2, 2002Publication date: July 31, 2003Inventor: Mikelyn Roderick

Publication number: 20030062330Abstract: A closure system useful for storing fluids under cold storage conditions. The closure system includes cap and container components which combine to form a dual sealing system. The container has a generally cylindrical side wall, a closed bottom end, and an open top end having an inner beveled lip depending from an annular top rim. The cap has a generally circular top wall from which inner and outer skirts depend. The outer skirt is adapted to grip the open top end of the container. The inner skirt includes an outer surface having a lower seal bead and an upper beveled portion mated with the beveled lip. When the cap is fitted onto the container, the seal bead contacts an inner surface of the container and the upper beveled portion and the beveled lip are engaged in an interference fit, thereby impeding the loss of fluid from the closure system under cold storage conditions.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 27, 2002Publication date: April 3, 2003Inventors: Robert F.
