Abstract: A seatbelt assembly with a buckle has male and female mating parts, in which the male part includes features to prevent disengagement operation by a child. The child resistant features include added ribs, webbing in the form of flanges or struts, or barbs or prongs that increase the difficulty for disengaging the buckle. The female part can have an arcuate outer surface to increase the overall durability of the buckle and resist damaging external forces or damaging misuse. The female part can also be provided with lateral shoulders to make the female part harder to withdraw and thus more child resistant. The seatbelt assembly with the child resistant buckle can be operated easily by an adult, while remaining secure from disengagement by a typical child.

  • Patent number: 6421889
Abstract: A buckle structure has a male and female buckle piece. The male buckle piece has a base mount having two symmetric retaining legs extending therefrom with a guiding post disposed therebetween. Each retaining leg has an enlarged head portion having a leading angle and a retaining corner. Each retaining leg has an abutment block. In the female buckle piece is defined a hollow engagement cavity for receiving retaining legs with a guiding tunnel disposed at the center for receiving the guiding post. The female buckle piece has a side dodging opening respectively for exposing the abutment block. A stop post located in the way of each retaining leg engages with the retaining corner in buckling up; actuation of the abutment block permits the retaining corner to escape from restraint, making buckle pieces to separate easily.

  • Patent number: 6418760
Abstract: A mechanism for converting between rotational and linear movement includes a rotatable hub structure and a striker element having an inboard end and an outboard end. In one form of the mechanism, a pivot/spring structure is positioned to engage a pivot location on the striker element between the inboard and outboard ends of the striker element. The pivot/spring structure provides a deflectable pivot fulcrum which can be deflected from a pivot rest position in response to a deflecting force exerted on the striker element. The hub structure can be engaged with the inboard end of the striker element so that a rotational movement of the hub structure provides a force on the striker element tending to cause the inboard end to pivot about the pivot structure, deflecting the pivot fulcrum such that the outboard end of the striker element moves in a generally axial direction. The mechanism can be used in a latch.

Abstract: A buckle is composed of a buckle body and an insertion body. The buckle includes an engagement and disengagement system in which the insertion body is inserted into the buckle body. An elastic member provided with elasticity, which is made of, for example, natural rubber, synthetic rubber or thermoplastic elastomer, is integrally molded on a pressing surface formed on an operating portion for performing an engagement and disengagement operation of the buckle by bicolor molding means or insert molding means. The pressing surface of the operating portion may be disposed on the buckle body or may be disposed on the insertion body. In either case, it is possible to produce a buckle having a good touch. Consequently, since the operating portion is flexible and soft to the touch, a smooth engagement and disengagement operation of the buckle can be realized.

  • Publication number: 20020007539
Abstract: A multi-point buckle including a buckle body, one or more attachment tongues and a floating latch, wherein during operation the buckle body is not subjected to tensile or compressive forces. Conventional straps can be attached to the body and the tongues. In a preferred embodiment, the tongues are inserted into the body, wherein locking prongs on the tongues attach to latch surfaces on the floating latch. When a pulling force is exerted on the tongues only a tensile force is transferred between the tongues and the floating latch. The buckle body is not subjected to any type of tensile or compressive forces. A preferred embodiment of the tongue includes a webbing lock. When used with a conventional strap, a webbing lock allows for ease of adjustment and also creates a wedging action on the strap when a pulling force is exerted. When placed under force the webbing lock provides a greater ability to hold the tongue in a substantially fixed position relative to the strap.
