Bandwidth Reduction System Patents (Class 348/384.1)
  • Patent number: 9532069
Abstract: Systems and methods of improving video encoding/decoding efficiency may be provided. A feature-based processing stream is applied to video data having a series of video frames. Computer-vision-based feature and object detection algorithms identify regions of interest throughout the video datacube. The detected features and objects are modeled with a compact set of parameters, and similar feature/object instances are associated across frames. Associated features/objects are formed into tracks, and each track is given a representative, characteristic feature. Similar characteristic features are clustered and then stored in a model library, for reuse in the compression of other videos. A model-based compression framework makes use of the preserved model data by detecting features in a new video to be encoded, relating those features to specific blocks of data, and accessing similar model information from the model library.

  • Patent number: 9406305
Abstract: A message is communicated between devices by passing a host signal, such as an audio signal, with the message written into the spectrogram of the host signal. For host audio signals, the message is authored, converted to an image format (if not already in suitable image form) and written into the spectrogram of the audio signal. The resulting audio signal can be communicated in a variety of ways, but in one particular embodiment, the audio signal is played from a speaker (e.g., of a sending mobile device) and captured through the microphone of a receiving device. The spectrogram of the received audio signal is computed and then rendered to a display screen (e.g., the display of a receiving mobile device).

Abstract: A video encoder signals, in an encoded video bitstream, a video parameter set (VPS) that includes a plurality of Hypothetical Reference Decoder (HRD) parameter syntax structures that each include HRD parameters. For each respective HRD parameter syntax structure in the plurality of HRD parameter syntax structures, the VPS further includes a syntax element indicating whether the HRD parameters of the respective HRD parameter syntax structure include a common set of HRD parameters in addition to a set of sub-layer-specific HRD parameter information specific to a particular sub-layer of the encoded video bitstream. The common set of HRD parameters is common to all sub-layers of the encoded video bitstream. • Patent number: 9269127
Abstract: A hybrid filtering method called Karhunen Loeve Transform-Wavelet (KW) filtering is presented to de-noise dynamic cardiac magnetic resonance images that simultaneously takes advantage of the intrinsic spatial and temporal redundancies of real-time cardiac cine. This filtering technique combines a temporal Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) and spatial adaptive wavelet filtering. KW filtering has four steps. The first is applying the KLT along the temporal direction, generating a series of “eigenimages”. The second is applying Marcenko-Pastur (MP) law to identify and discard the noise-only eigenimages. The third applying a 2-D spatial wavelet filter with adaptive threshold to each eigenimage to define the wavelet filter strength for each of the eigenimages based on the noise variance and standard deviation of the signal. Lastly, the inverse KLT is applied to the filtered eigenimages to generate a new series of cine images with reduced image noise.

Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention uses an abbreviated blanking period, in comparison to the standard VESA and CEA-EIA blanking periods, in order to send data, including low bandwidth, non-timing information, over one or more channels of the digital video link. By shortening the blanking period, the amount of time available for sending data in each scan line is increased, enabling the system to send more data over each channel. The inactive video portion of a scan line sent during vertical sync may also be used to send additional digital data. Shortening the blanking periods and/or using the inactive video sections of the horizontal scan lines adds to the overall data capacity of the link and may be used to send other digital data, such as multichannel audio, video, control, timing, closed captioning or other digital data.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for a control of closed captioning based on an audio volume level. A content receiver detects that a volume of an audio of a video presentation has been adjusted by a user, and determines the adjusted audio volume level that results from the adjustment. The content receiver compares the resulting adjusted audio volume level to a threshold level. When the content determines that the adjusted audio volume level is under the threshold level, it enables closed captioning of the video presentation, thus presenting the user with both audio and closed captioning. When the content receiver determines that the adjusted audio volume level is above the threshold level, it disables closed captioning for the video presentation. The content receiver may use a microphone to determine the adjusted audio volume level.

  • Patent number: 8253756
Abstract: A circuit dithers pixel data on a display, and includes a lookup table module, a dithering parameter decoder, a first adder, a second adder, and an overflow handling module. A lookup table of the lookup table module stores dithering parameters generated by encoding odd and even pixel dithering parameters. The dithering parameter decoder generates second and third dithering parameters corresponding to odd and even pixels from a first dithering parameter. The first adder generates a dithered odd pixel parameter according to the odd pixel parameter and the second dithering parameter. The second adder generates a dithered even pixel parameter according to the even pixel parameter and the third dithering parameter. The overflow handling module checks for overflow, and generates an output odd pixel parameter according to the dithered odd pixel parameter, and generates an output even pixel parameter according to the dithered even pixel parameter.

Abstract: In this image processing device, an image processing portion 102 performs a predetermined pre-processing on first image data and outputs it as second image data. A judging portion 104 that judges the degree of importance of the first image data on the basis of the characteristics of a subject that is included in the first image data. A reducing portion 105 reduces the data amount of the second image data in accordance with that degree of importance and outputs it as third image data. According to this image processing device, by reducing the data amount of the second image data in accordance with the degree of importance of the first image data, it is possible to achieve greater reductions in the data amount as the degree of importance decreases. As a result, it is possible to more efficiently reduce the power consumption and time required when transferring image data after data reduction.

  • Patent number: 8203619
Abstract: A method of deciding a target bit rate for wavelet-based image encoding based on the wavelet coefficients is described. The target bit rate is used for maintaining a high quality image. A minimum target bit rate and a maximum target bit rate are determined. A pseudo code length corresponding to the minimum target bit rate is calculated. The pseudo code length is calculated as a function of the wavelet coefficients. The corresponding pseudo code length is calculated for the maximum target bit rate. A curve between the pseudo code length and target bit rate is derived. Slope of the curve depends on buffer fullness. Using the curve, for a given pseudo code length, an appropriate target bit rate is derived. The derived target bit rate depends on the image content, and computing resources are able to be optimally used to attain similar quality for each image block of an image.
