  • Patent number: 7469420
Abstract: A method for protecting the digital output signal of a security module, comprising the steps of: receiving a scrambled digital signal from a source external to said security module, recovering at least one transport scramble control flag from the scrambled digital signal, descrambling said received scrambled signal to generate a descrambled signal, monitoring the at least one transport scramble control flag, generating a scrambling key in response to said monitored at least one transport scramble control flag, and scrambling said descrambled signal using said scrambling key to generate a re-scrambled signal. The present invention also includes a conditional access system comprising a host device and a security device coupled to the host device, such that the security device includes at least one transport scramble control flag modification circuit. By monitoring the transport scramble control flag as content passes through the security module, protection of the content can be securely maintained.

  • Publication number: 20080285751
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for deterring theft of media recording devices. Input received from a sensor, or some portion of the input, is encrypted prior to storing a media file. A decryption key must be provided when the media file is to be played back. If the key is not provided, then the file is preferably still played back, but is played back in a degraded manner. For example, a background color or other filler may be rendered in place of the encrypted portion. Additional parts of the file may also be degraded during playback. By making the playback unpleasant for the listener/viewer, theft of the recording device will be much less desirable—yet recording can continue uninterrupted, thereby minimizing disruption to legitimate users. The disclosed techniques may also be used to deter theft of the recorded media.

  • Patent number: 7362861
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for protecting copyrighted information, e.g., video signals, from unauthorized copying. Analog red (R), green (G) and blue (B) video signals are transmitted from a source device, e.g., a display adapter, to a display device, e.g., a monitor, over corresponding analog signal lines after the identify of the destination device is confirmed by receipt of a certificate assigned to the destination device. A session key, used for encrypting the analog signals, is generated and exchanged between the source and destination devices after the identification of the destination device is confirmed. The source and destination devices each includes a pseudo-random number generator driven by the session key. The lines that carry the R, G and B video signals are changed, e.g., swapped, on a periodic basis as a function of the output of the pseudo-random number generator in the source device.

Abstract: A video signal and an audio signal are time division multiplexed, encrypted, and transmitted. A transmission side time-compresses the audio signal, multiplexes, encrypts, and transmits the time-compressed audio signal in a blanking period of the video signal. Control is performed using an audio signal data enable signal ADE, and an audio signal/video signal switch signal.

  • Patent number: 7356142
Abstract: A method for recording data on an optical medium is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving a first plurality of frames of data at a Cross Interleave Reed-Solomon Code (CIRC) encoder, encoding the first plurality of frames of data by the CIRC encoder to generate a second plurality of frames of data, generating a set of data to form a Q sub-channel, altering selected data bits in the Q sub-channel to form an encoded Q sub-channel, forming a plurality of control bytes including the encoded Q sub-channel, adding one of the control bytes to each one of the second plurality of frames of data to generate a third plurality of frames of data, encoding selected portions of the third plurality of frames of data by an EFM encoder to generate a plurality of channel frames, and recording the channel frames on the optical medium. This method allows CDs to be recorded that cannot be played by conventional CD players.

  • Patent number: 7350082
Abstract: A method of upgrading an encryption process for encryption of video information from an old encryption process to a new encryption process, consistent with certain embodiments involves selecting a portion of video content for selective encryption. The selected portion is duplicated to produce first and second copies of the selected portion. The first copy is encrypted using the old encryption process and the second copy is encrypted using the new encryption process to produce a dual partially encrypted segment of video information that can either be broadcast over a cable or satellite system or stored in a package medium as two program chains.

Abstract: According to certain embodiments consistent with the present invention, a method of processing digital video content, wherein the digital video content comprises intra-coded frames and inter-coded frames, involves selecting a plurality of the intra-coded frames for encryption to produce selected frames; encrypting the selected frames under a first encryption algorithm to produce first encrypted frames; storing the inter-coded frames in a first file; and storing the intra-coded frames, whether encrypted under the first encryption algorithm or unencrypted, in a second file. For a multiple encryption embodiment consistent with the present invention, the method further involves duplicating the intra-coded frames; encrypting duplicates of the selected frames under a second encryption algorithm to produce second encrypted frames; storing the intra-coded frames, whether encrypted under the second encryption algorithm or unencrypted, in a third file.

  • Patent number: 7336787
Abstract: An encryption arrangement for multiple encryption of television programs. A system according to embodiments of the present invention multiple encrypts only a portion of the data required for full presentation of a television program to permit coexistence of multiple conditional access encryption systems associated with multiple manufacturer's set-top boxes within a single system. In one embodiment, only critical packets such as those carrying a payload incorporating packetized elementary stream header information is encrypted. By only encrypting a portion of the program, dramatically less bandwidth is consumed than the alternative of multiple encryption of all program data, thus permitting a larger number of programs to be carried over the same bandwidth while permitting coexistence of multiple conditional access systems in a single cable television system.

Abstract: A method and system for detecting and preventing network intrusion by generating an intrusion signature formatted using an intrusion signature template, the signature for use with an intrusion engine that allows adding new and/or modifying existing intrusion signatures. A packet analysis engine samples packets on the network, analyzes the sampled packets, and recognizes suspicious packets generated by malicious code. An intrusion signature generator then generates an intrusion signature using the template, and the signature is imported into an intrusion engine, which uses it to block the suspicious packets. The template can be provided by a network administrator, and the signature can be imported into the intrusion engine with or without human intervention.
