Abstract: Embodiments of wireless display of digital content include transmission using a television transmission standard, such as a set of standards defined by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) for digital television (TV) transmissions. The digital content is transmitted in a short range wireless network. In some embodiments, an encryption technique is applied to add security allowing decryption by a digital television using a firmware update, allowing retrofitting of security to devices currently deployed.

Abstract: A system and a method for providing variable security mechanisms for securing digital content, in which a single security mechanism is not used for all content. Instead, at least one characteristic or feature of the security mechanism is varied between units, instances or categories of content. Therefore, even if unauthorized access is gained to a single unit of content, the overall integrity and security of the system for content distribution is not compromised. Preferably, security is provided though a general mechanism, which is then varied in order to provide variable, dissimilar security schemes for different types of content. By “type of content”, it is meant any of a single unit of content, a single instance of content or a single category of content. For example, for a category of content, the content may be characterized according to the identity of the content itself, such as the title of a movie for example, and/or according to the owner of a particular copy of the content.

Abstract: The invention refers to a method of updating a multi-operator reception system by administration (EMM) and updating messages between a subscriber management system and one or several decoders of pay television, being the functioning of the decoder dependent on the reception of administration (EMM) and updating messages of at least one preferential operator, this decoder having to pass into stand-by state under certain conditions. If the subscriber uses mostly an operator that does not require subscription rights, the decoder does not receive any more the necessary updating. To switch this decoder into the stand-by state, the method according to the invention carries out the following operations: switching of the reception to one or several preferential operators, receiving and processing of the messages of management of rights (EMM), determining of the end of a complete cycle of reception messages, switching to the stand-by state.

  • Patent number: 7912218
Abstract: The invention proposes to divide a content to be transmitted via a network into a set of slices and to generate a set of files from this set of slices. The slices (or the files) are encrypted before downloading in such a way that the client cannot use the slice (or the file) before having acquired the associated decryption key. The invention thereby allows protecting a downloaded content on a slice-by-slice basis (or on a file-by-file basis) rather than protecting a downloaded content as a whole. The transmission (in download mode) between the server and the client is ruled by the HTTP protocol that is accepted by all firewalls and NAT. Consequently, the transmitted content is accessible for any client device that has access to the Web without restriction. Advantageously, the slices can be decoded independently of each other.

The watermark embedder divides each image frame into two areas. A watermark bit ‘+1’ is embedded in a frame by increasing the luminance of the first part and decreasing the luminance of the second part. A watermark bit ‘?1’ is embedded by decreasing the luminance of the first part and increasing the luminance of the second part. It is achieved with the invention that the embedded watermark survives ‘de-flicker’ operations that are often used to remove flicker caused by the different frame rates of cinema projection equipment and consumer camcorders.

Abstract: A scrambling apparatus and method are provided for increasing randomness without damaging compression efficiency of total video data by selectively and randomly performing conversion when converting motion vector codes of compressed video data into other motion vector codes indicating other motion vector values, and more particularly, by performing conditional conversion only if a predetermined condition is satisfied when selective conversion of motion vector codes is performed. The scrambling apparatus includes a conversion motion vector code table generator generating a conversion motion vector code table comprising motion vector codes obtained by converting motion vector codes corresponding to motion vector values of input video data in a standard motion vector code table; and a conversion controller randomly determining whether a certain motion vector value is encoded using the conversion motion vector code table or the standard motion vector code table.

Abstract: The invention discloses a new modulation scheme to prevent illegal copy in movie theaters. None of the existing modulation schemes make the right assumptions to modelize a camcorder device. In such classical schemes, camcorders are always considered as sampling devices without taking into account the effects of shutter speed. The shutter of the camcorder is classically compared to a low-pass filter. As a result, modulation effects can be easily removed by setting up shutter speed to low values (low cutoff frequency). The right mathematical modelization of the shutter effect shows that, in the spectral domain, the behavior of the camcorder is close to a cardinal sine function with a main lobe and sidelobes.

Abstract: A unified system of programming communication. The system encompasses the prior art (television, radio, broadcast hardcopy, computer communications, etc.) and new user specific mass media. Within the unified system, parallel processing computer systems, each having an input (e.g., 77) controlling a plurality of computers (e.g., 205), generate and output user information at receiver stations. Under broadcast control, local computers (73, 205), combine user information selectively into prior art communications to exhibit personalized mass media programming at video monitors (202), speakers (263), printers (221), etc. At intermediate transmission stations (e.g., cable television stations), signals in network broadcasts and from local inputs (74, 77, 97, 98) cause control processors (71) and computers (73) to selectively automate connection and operation of receivers (53), recorder/players (76), computers (73), generators (82), strippers (81), etc.

Abstract: The invention defines a method for leveraging the standard conditional access module interface of a digital TV receiver to deliver IPTV or other TV content without the need of a set top box. An IP-connected interface (“probe”) is used in place of a conditional access module to establish a two-way communication link between the TV and the IPTV headend or other IP content source and to deliver IP content. In an embodiment, the invention covers the specifics of content navigation without requiring any modification of the TV receiver application software or provisioning of IPTV-specific software. Content navigation is achieved by supporting a catalog/grid browsing session on the TV receiver and enabling a flat multiplex navigation, a virtual MPEG multiplex that contains the definition of several available programs but a single video and audio channel is dynamically switched to carry the selected program.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for inserting advertisements and/or to perform grooming functions after a video, audio and/or data stream has been transrated and/or encrypted. In this manner, ad insertion and grooming can be performed close to the edge of a video distribution network. Transrating and encryption of a program into which content is to be later inserted can be accomplished before the program is transmitted. Thus, a single encrypted version of a program can be transmitted from a central point in the network to multiple recipients, while providing the benefits of subsequent targeted ad insertion or grooming downstream of the central point.
