With Specified Seal Patents (Class 384/130)
  • Patent number: 4556239
Abstract: An arrangement at rotating shafts with a wheel fixedly mounted to the shaft, which wheel rotates in a housing surrounding the wheel, an essentially pipe-shaped element surrounding the shaft, an with essentially axially sealing surface provided sealing device between the pipe-shaped element and the wheel and a passage in the housing for the shaft with a sealing device, which seals against the pipe-shaped element. There is mounted a fastening device on the shaft for axial displacement of the pipe-shaped element in order to cause a sealing effect by means of the sealing device between the pipe-shaped element and the wheel. The fastening device is fixed in sealing position by a locking device.

  • Patent number: 4491037
Abstract: In a planetary gear type reduction drive unit having a sleeve shiftable between an extended torque transmitting position wherein both ends are supported and centered on an axis of rotation and a retracted non-torque transmitting position wherein one end is substantially unsupported and susceptible to unbalance oscillation when reverse torque is applied to the planetary gear set, an improved seal arrangement including a flexible lip seal which seals between a stationary portion of the unit and the sleeve in the extended and retracted positions of the latter and a pilot bearing adjacent the seal and engageable on the unsupported end of the sleeve in the retracted position of the latter to control runout and avoid oscillatory deflection of the lip seal.

  • Patent number: 4452539
Abstract: The present invention relates to a drill bit (10) incorporating one or more rotary cutters (14). The rotary cutters (14) are supported for rotation by a bearing assembly including ball bearings (28) running in races (24, 26) in the rotary cutter and drill bit body (20). The bearing assembly further includes an annular bushing (34). A sealing assembly (36) including an O-ring seal (38) is provided to seal lubricant within the bearing assembly and prevent external contaminants from entering the bearing assembly. Corrosion has been found to destroy the seal surfaces (42, 44) against which the O-ring seal acts (38). It has been found that plating the sealing surfaces with a material passive to the electrochemical system or higher in the electromotive series than the material forming the sealing surfaces reduces corrosion. Alternatively, a sacrificial anode (68) is provided about the sealing surfaces to render the surfaces cathodic and resist corrosion.

  • Patent number: 4445793
Abstract: In a spiral groove bearing a gap between a surface portion which has grooves thereon and its opposing surface portion is smaller than the gap between any other surface portion which does not have grooves thereon and its opposing surface portion. A lubricant is disposed in the narrower gap. An oil repellent layer is applied to either the surface portion having grooves thereon or its opposing surface in the vicinity of the narrower gap.

  • Patent number: 4435096
Abstract: A sealing arrangement for sealing a stationary member to a rotatable member wherein a neck of the rotatable member is coaxially received in a sleeve secured for rotation therewith and the sleeve is journaled for rotation in the stationary member. An extension ring is annularly secured to one end of the sleeve with a normally flat annular thrower seal of elastomeric material annularly engaged between this extension ring and the one end of the sleeve to provide a seal therebetween with inner and outer annular peripheral portions of the thrower seal radially protruding. The inner peripheral portion of the thrower seal annularly engages the neck of the rotatable member under elastic deformation to provide an annular static seal and a peripheral side face of the outer peripheral portion of the thrower seal annularly engages an annular seal rubbing surface of the stationary member under elastic deformation to provide an annular rubbing seal therebetween.
