  • Patent number: 5609889
Abstract: A printed wiring board with either a pin grid array, a ball grid array, a land grid array, etc. of electrical contacts is prepared with a heat sink attached in the usual manner. A passage is provided either in the printed wiring board or in the heat sink so that during the transfer molding process, fluid molding compound passes latitudinally under the heat sink into a cavity below the heat sink. The mold is provided with a biased plug that exerts pressure on the heat sink or printed wiring board to prevent molding compound from covering the heat sink. The biased plug also accommodates variations in the thickness of the printed wiring board.

  • Patent number: 5599563
Abstract: A loudspeaker cone assembly having a generally conical cone body and an annular flexible suspension rim. In making the cone assembly, a cone body having an outer free edge is placed within a female mold having an annular channel configured to form the suspension rim with the free outer edge of the cone exposed to the channel. A predetermined quantity of liquid plastic foam is deposited into the channel which is then substantially closed by a male die so as to seal off the cone body adjacent its outer free edge. The foam is then expanded and cured so that the resulting annular rim is integrally impregnated into the free outer edge of the cone body and forms high density closed-cell outer skin surfaces on opposite sides of a low density closed-cell inner core to provide a suspension rim having improved flexibility, strength and durability. A color coating may be applied to selective exposed surface areas of the suspension rim.

  • Patent number: 5597523
Abstract: A molding apparatus having an upper mold, a lower mold, and a cylindrical mold cavity defined between the upper mold and the lower mold and adapted to receive a molding material such as epoxy resin. An annular recess is defined in the lower mold adjacent to the mold cavity. A gasket is fit in the recess and made of lead. An oil passage is defined in the lower mold. Silicon oil as a pressure medium is fed to the recess through the oil passage so as to press the gasket against the upper mold. Then, the gasket is deformed to form a seal around a portion of the mold cavity where the upper and lower molds mate with one another. An annular spacer is placed in the bottom of the recess. An annular groove is defined below and along the bottom of the recess so as to allow the silicon oil to flow below and along the annular spacer, whereby sufficient pressure is exerted uniformly on the gasket to cause deformation of the gasket.

  • Patent number: 5514255
Abstract: Multiple, typically 5+, trays of an identical special configuration are vertically stacked one atop the next, end-to-end reversed. Each tray has an overflow feature, normally in the form of either (i) a portion of a side that is reduced in height so as to form a lip, (ii) a corner hole protected by a removable baffle of selectable height, or (iii) a threaded standpipe that may be screwed to variable height. The overflow feature permits that liquid will overflow each tray only upon reaching a predetermined height in a reservoir of the tray. A liquid poured in the top tray cascades downwards from tray to tray, filling each tray to a uniform even level and ultimately reaching the bottom tray of the stack. The liquid that is within each tray is permitted to gel, forming thereby a gel state material that is suitable to receive samples upon which electrophoresis may be conducted. Combination spacer and toothed comb elements are optionally inserted between the stacked trays.

  • Patent number: 5370517
Abstract: A die-stamped frame is fastened to a heat sink metal baseplate by wedging flexible tabs into receiving indentations of the baseplate while keeping the frame substantially in contact with the surface of the baseplate. The wire welding operations may then take place on the end of the fingers of the patterned metal frame while the same are solidly resting on the surface of the baseplate thus facilitating the welding. The backing-off of the metal frame from the surface of the heat sink baseplate takes place upon the closing of the mold used for encapsulating in resin the device. The injection of the resin and its solidification "freezes" the pins in the backed-off position imposed by the mold upon closing, thus ensuring the electrical isolation between the pins and the integral heat sink baseplate.

Abstract: A directed fiber, directed energy process provides both a method and an apparatus for making structural preforms. Fibrous reinforcement material is chopped into short lengths of fiber and propelled toward a perforate mold part. During propulsion and/or after deposition on the perforate mold part the fibers are sprayed with an electromagnetic radiation-curable binder. Abstract: An apparatus for encapsulating an integrated circuit lead frame in plastic is disclosed. This apparatus includes an upper mold and a lower mold which, when properly joined together, define the package area of the lead frame as well as a reservoir for the molten plastic and a conduit and flow pocket for assuring uniform flow of plastic into the package area of the molds. The integrated circuit lead frame has a flow hole to allow the molten plastic to flow from the conduit into the flow pocket and into the bottom portion of the package area. The conduit also allows the molten plastic to flow directly to the top portion of the package area. • Patent number: 5129804
Abstract: A mold for making bathtubes is disclosed. The mold includes a mold receptor and an insert attached to the mold receptor face. The mold receptor receives a shell which has a finish side and a non-finish side. The shell is placed in the mold receptor leaving a void between the non-finish side of the shell and the face of the receptor. The insert is attached to the face of the mold receptor to reduce the cross-sectional area of a portion of the space between the shell and mold receptor face. A male mold engages the finish side of the shell, sealably retaining the shell to the mold receptor. A polymeric foam material is introduced into the void between the receptor and the shell. The polymeric material fills the void and coats the shell. The molded bathtub is then removed from the mold receptor after the male mold has been removed. The insert is then removed leaving an area of reduced thickness and a periphery on the non-finish side of the molded bathtub which defines a lip.
