  • Patent number: 4976596
Abstract: Spliced end portions (30--30) of two optical fibers are recoated in a manner which results in the cross section of the spliced length of fiber transverse to a longitudinal axis thereof being substantially constant. This is accomplished without compromising the adhesion of a curable recoating material (51) to an adjacent original coating material (38). In order to provide such a recoated portion, original coating material which is removed to permit splicing is removed in such a manner as to leave a tapered portion (52) remaining on the end portion of each optical fiber. As a result, the interface between the recoating material and the original coating material is increased sufficiently to avoid having to overlap some of the recoating material with original coating material on adjacent portions of the fibers being spliced.

  • Patent number: 4936762
Abstract: This disclosure illustrates and describes a test mold for the quantitative measure of the effects of formulation and/or process variable changes on some kinds of surface problems of a molded part caused by different degrees of imperfection or voiding underneath the part surface. The molded part can be single component or composite, solid or foamed. One example of the surface problem is the so-called "measles or cellulite" problem observed on the vinyl surface of a vinyl/foam composite due to the voids or rattiness within the foam. To accomplish this result, the mold has various sized, spaced apart, aligned openings formed in each of the front and rear walls of the mold, but with the centers thereof at different elevations in the respective front and rear walls. Removable rods inserted through the aligned mold wall openings produce longitudinal openings through the part which is molded around the rods, permitting the effect thereof on the surface of the molded part to be evaluated.

  • Patent number: 4818205
Abstract: A plastic molded snap fastener including a stud head having solid thin annular base flange and a top, the top and the flange being held in spaced relation by radial ribs preferably in the form of a cross piece, the top being annular but "flattened" on the outer perimeter in the area of the ends of the cross piece. Where the plastic is compatible with the plastic of the fabric, the fastener parts may be molded directly on the fabric. In a modification the base flange is split by a plane perpendicular to the axis of the fastener part. The base fabric is sandwiched between the parts of the flange. This modification is useful where the plastic of the fastener is not compatible with the plastic of the fabric. The invention also includes a mold apparatus for forming the fastener on a strip of fabric wherein core pins on one side of the mold cooperate with spring-pressed ejection pins on the other side and with cavities in the mold retainer plates to shape the parts.

  • Patent number: 4806405
Abstract: A link chain or string is produced in an injection molding tool in such a way that a plurality of links threaded onto a string or cable are molded simultaneously, for example in the form of spheres. In order to avoid the transmission of axial forces to the links, which forces might disturb the axial spacings from link to link, the injection molding tool is provided with restrictions which reduce the cross-sectional area of molten material flow channels to a minimum. Preferably, the restricted area is located directly at the respective link. The channels all lead to a common injection molding channel to which the molten material is supplied for thus simultaneously casting or molding of a plurality of links to strings or cables. The restrictions make sure that any forces resulting from shrinkage during the cooling and solidifying cannot shift the balls or links even if the latter are not yet completely solidified internally. Thus, errors in the on-center spacing between adjacent links are avoided.

  • Patent number: 4804322
Abstract: The invention relates to a deep-drawing machine for manufacturing containers out of thermoplastic foil by means of a cutting device which includes a banderole arrangement for manufacturing banderoles, labels or the like and includes inserting such into hollow molds of a forming arrangement. For the purpose of simultaneously inserting a large number of banderoles, labels or the like into the hollow molds and for the additional purpose of an easy access to the banderole arrangement and the forming arrangement, and for the purpose of independently driving these two arrangements, the banderole arrangement together with the cutting device is constructed separately from the forming arrangement and there is provided a transfer arrangement between the forming arrangement and the banderole arrangement in the form of a rotatable dish whose axis of rotation is essentially parallel to the longitudinal axes of the hollow molds.

  • Patent number: 4801553
Abstract: A cassette for holding a tissue specimen comprises a body portion (10) and a separable portion (12) which snap together to enclose a specimen (42) in a mould space (54) of the cassette. The specimen (42) is located and oriented in the mould space (54) between a compliant base portion (14) and the separable portion (12). The specimen is processed by the successive application of processing fluids before being embedded in paraffin wax. The specimen is held in its oriented position on the cassette during processing and embedding, there being no handling or re-positioning of the specimen between processing and embedding. During embedding, molten wax is supplied to a container (56) in which the cassette is placed. Wax surrounds and embeds the specimen, the container base is then cooled to solidify a base layer of wax, allowing the remaining wax to be drained from the container, leaving the wax within the cassette to solidify and cool.

  • Patent number: 4793784
Abstract: The apparatus includes a first female mold member defining a shaped mold cavity for receiving a plastisol layer or skin. A second mold member is pivotally disposed on the female mold member between an open and closed position. In the open position, the second mold member receives and holds thereon a portion of the plastisol skin extending from the mold cavity. An insert is positioned in the mold cavity by a third mold member such as a mold lid on which the insert is releasably retained. After the insert is positioned in the mold cavity, the second mold member is pivoted toward the mold lid to fold the skin portion thereon over and against an edge of the insert. The skin is folded adjacent the pivot axis of the second mold member. Foam can then be introduced and cured between the skin and insert.
