  • Patent number: 9023772
Abstract: Corrosion by ammonia/amine salts in hydrocarbon streams such as distillation overhead streams that contain a mineral acid and water can be prevented, avoided or minimized by adding certain strong amines to the streams. The amines have a pKa between about 10.5 to about 12 and include, but are not necessarily limited to, dimethylamine, diethylamine, dipropylamine, diisopropyl-amine, di-n-butylamine, diisobutylamine, di-sec-butylamine, di-tert-butylamine, pyrrolidine, piperidine, and combinations thereof. If the hydrocarbon stream further includes a nitrogen-containing compound such as ammonia, a tramp and/or a residual amine which can form a corrosive salt with the mineral acid, then the added amine is a stronger base than the tramp or residual amine, if present. The amount of added amine is greater than total amount of nitrogen-containing compound, so that any corrosive salts formed are less corrosive than the salts that would otherwise form from the ammonia and/or tramp amine.

  • Patent number: 9023773
Abstract: Lubrication additives of the current invention require formation of emulsions in base lubricants, created with an aqueous salt solution plus a single-phase compound such that partitioning within the resulting emulsion provides thermodynamically targeted compounds for boundary layer organization thus establishing anti-friction and/or anti-wear. The single-phase compound is termed “boundary layer organizer”, abbreviated BLO. These emulsion-contained compounds energetically favor association with tribologic surfaces in accord with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and will organize boundary layers on those surfaces in ways specific to the chemistry of the salt and BLO additives. In this way friction modifications may be provided by BLOs targeted to boundary layers via emulsions within lubricating fluids, wherein those lubricating fluids may be water-based or oil-based.

Abstract: A lubricant containing a minor amount of a polyalkene-substituted succinimide of Mn 1800 to 2800, as a first base, is circulated through a lubricating system so that the succinimide forms salts with at least a portion of combustion acids therein. The lubricant is then contacted with an immobilised second base, stronger than the first base, that displaces at least a portion of the succinimide from the salts to form retained second base: combustion acid salts and release the succinimide into the lubricant.

Abstract: An aqueous hydraulic fluid composition comprising of one or more lubricants such as a monovalent metal salt, ammonium, or amine salt of a dicarboxylic acid, such as a C21 dicarboxylic acid is described in which the aqueous hydraulic fluid composition demonstrates increased thermal stability when exposed to elevated temperatures for a prolonged period of time while being able to tolerate the presence of 10% v/v synthetic seawater. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition contains less than about 20% by weight (preferably none or substantially none) of an oil selected from the group consisting of mineral oils, synthetic hydrocarbon oils, and mixtures thereof. The hydraulic fluid hereof preferably comprises a cyclical or ring base tertiary amine with no hydroxyl functionality such as 1,4-dimethyl piperazine.

Abstract: A wiresaw cutting fluid composition of the present invention comprises about 25 to about 75% by weight of a particulate abrasive suspended in an aqueous carrier containing a polymeric viscosity modifier that comprises a polymer including a majority of non-ionic monomer units (preferably 100 mol % non-ionic monomer units), has a number average molecular weight (Mn) of at least about 5 kDa, and is present in the composition at a concentration sufficient to provide a Brookfield viscosity for the composition in the range of about 50 to about 1000 cP, e.g., 50 to about 700 cP, at about 25° C. at a spindle rotation rate of about 60 rpm. In one embodiment, the viscosity modifier comprises a polymer having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of at least about 200 kDa. When a viscosity modifier of 200 kDa or greater Mw is utilized, a preferred wiresaw cutting method the cutting fluid is circulated and applied by pumps and nozzles operating at a relatively low shear rate of not more than about 104 s?1.
