Abstract: Compositions of P4HB with high purity have been developed. The compositions are prepared by washing P4HB biomass prior to solvent extraction, and precipitating P4HB from solution. The same solvent is preferably used to wash the P4HB biomass, and as a non-solvent to precipitate the polymer from a P4HB solvent solution. The highly pure P4HB compositions are suitable for preparing implants. The implants may be used for the repair of soft and hard tissues.

Abstract: The subject matter of the invention is a radically polymerizable dental material comprising at least two components. A first component of the dental material contains the salt of a CH-acidic compound, and an additional component contains an acid with acidity greater than that of the CH-acidic compound of the first component. Both components contain radically polymerizable monomers. When the two components are mixed, the acid of the second component converts the salt of the CH-acidic compound of the first component into a CH-acidic molecule, and the CH-acidic molecule triggers the radical polymerization of the monomers. In addition to the advantages of CH-acidic compounds in dental materials on the basis of a reactive resin, the invention achieves long-term storage stability as a result of an increase in the proportion of the reactive resin matrix in polymerizable dental materials.

Abstract: Provided are a polymer composition on a substrate and a surface modification method which is non-selective to substrate materials. Chemical vapor deposition polymerization is used to deposit a maleimide-functionalized poly-p-xylylene coating on a substrate. The substrate is readily available to perform a thiol-maleimide coupling reaction under mild conditions so as to modify the surface thereof. Furthermore, through a tailored thiol-terminal molecule, a designer surface can be created via thiol-maleimide coupling on a substrate, and the resulting surface can exhibit various desired biological functions for biotechnological applications. Therefore, this modification technique can be applied to biological fields extensively.
