Abstract: Disclosed herein are novel systems and methods for demonstrating functionality of a consumer electronic device contained in a point-of-sale package. A consumer electronic device includes an external switch, such as a pushbutton switch, detachably connected via a cable to the device's communication interface, such as its USB port. The switch may be partially exposed through the point-of-sale package, so that a consumer can activate the electronic device in a “demo mode”. In this mode, the device may be configured to play a multimedia demo clip or other presentation. When the electronic device is purchased and removed from the package by the consumer, the cable and the switch may be disconnected from the device and discarded. The consumer may then activate the device in a “normal mode” using the device's power-on switch.

Abstract: There is proposed a method for producing a marketable package comprising an outer packaging (34, 40) for receiving a portable data carrier, and a portable data carrier (10). The data carrier (10) possesses a viewing side (12) and an underside (16) and bears a secret code internally as well as identification information on the outer side. According to the invention, the identification information is applied to the underside (16) of the data carrier (10) in the form of a two-dimensional bar code (20), and the outer packaging (34, 40) is configured to be transparent on the underside (16) so that the identification information can be read out through the outer packaging (34, 40) after the data carrier (10) has been inserted into the outer packaging (34, 40).

Abstract: A gas release device that includes a reservoir of pressurised gas and a passageway from said reservoir to an outlet. There is an elastic gas permeable membrane in the passageway that allows gas release only via the membrane. A gas impermeable member is provided in the passageway that includes an interface positioned to contact said gas permeable membrane. Displacement of the gas permeable membrane is responsive to the pressure of the gas in the reservoir such that there is a greater interfacial contact between the gas impermeable member and the gas permeable membrane at a higher gas pressure than at lower pressure to thereby vary the exposed cross sectional area of the permeable membrane available to the flow in an inverse relationship to pressure.

Abstract: A hanging display package includes a hanger and a box. The hanger defines a top segment and a bottom segment spaced from and coupled with the top segment and includes a hook extending upwardly from the top segment. The box includes front and rear panels, a top panel extending between and above the front and rear panels, and a side panel extending from the front panel to the rear panel. A cavity is defined between the panels. The top panel borders each of the front and rear panels along first and second fold lines, respectively, and is substantially planar. The side panel defines a topmost edge spaced below the top panel such that a side opening is defined between the topmost edge and the front panel. The bottom segment of the hanger extends through the side opening. Other products, assemblies, and methods are also disclosed.

Abstract: A package system which combines an article and a container in an integrated package with the article secured in nested relationship within a recess of the container. The recess has sufficient depth such that portions of the side walls of the container extend outwardly effectively beyond an exposed surface of the article so as to protect the article against damage. Alternatively, the package system includes a pair of spaced columns which are integrally formed with the side wall of the container and which extend outwardly from the side wall. A recess is formed between the column members which is configured to receive an article in nested relationship within the recess. Methods for securing the article in nested relationship within the recess of the container are also disclosed.

Abstract: Packaging and de-packaging methods using shape memory polymers are disclosed herein. An embodiment of the packaging method involves placing a part adjacent to shape memory polymer in its permanent shape, heating the shape memory polymer to a temperature above its switching temperature, and applying a force to the heated shape memory polymer such that the polymer switches from its permanent shape into a temporary shape. The temporary shape of the shape memory polymer conforms to at least one of i) a shape of the part, or ii) a desired shape for packaging the part. The method further includes cooling the shape memory polymer to a temperature below its switching temperature to set the temporary shape.
