Abstract: A method for preventing or arresting the development and propagation of cracks in the material surrounding a fastener. The method includes introducing compressive residual stresses in the material surrounding the fastener. The compressive residual stresses offset the high residual tensile and applied stresses which the material may be subjected to in operation and thereby prevent or arrest the development of cracks. Using the output of a sensor, the surface treatment apparatus is positioned relative to a fastener. A compression tool is impinged against the surface of the material adjacent to the fastener and rotated around the perimeter of the fastener thereby inducing a zone of compressive residual stress.

The main stent component is formed from a flat strip having one or more undulating side bands that may be connected to form geometrically shaped cells and are helically wound to form a stent. The helical coils of the main stent component may be spaced apart or nestled to each other. The nestling of the undulation of adjacent helical windings contributes to maintaining the tubular shape and uniformity of the helically coiled stent. Alternatively, the flat strip may comprise a single undulating pattern. At the ends of the main stent component are end bands, which when wound, form a cylindrical ring. In one embodiment, one or more struts of the main stent component may have a width sufficient to include one or more fenestrations. The fenestrated struts may be connected by loops or turns wherein the material is narrower than that of the fenestrated struts to provide enhanced flexibility.

Abstract: The invention is to provide a magnesium alloy material such as a magnesium alloy cast material or a magnesium alloy rolled material, excellent in mechanical characteristics and surface precision, a producing method capable of stably producing such material, a magnesium alloy formed article utilizing the rolled material, and a producing method therefor. The invention provides a producing method for a magnesium alloy material, including a melting step of melting a magnesium alloy in a melting furnace to obtain a molten metal, a transfer step of transferring the molten metal from the melting furnace to a molten metal reservoir, and a casting step of supplying a movable mold with the molten metal from the molten metal reservoir, through a pouring gate, and solidifying the molten metal to continuously produce a cast material. In a process from the melting step to the casting step, parts contacted by the molten metal are formed by a low-oxygen material having an oxygen content of 20 mass % or less.

Abstract: In a method of producing a stamper for roughening a substrate of an optical recording medium, a masking treatment is carried out prior to a blasting treatment, whereby a second pit forming site of a metal plate is protected such that the second pit forming site is not broken in the following blasting treatment. A mask of an adhesive sheet is attached to the second pit forming site in the masking treatment, and then a part of one major surface of the metal plate, exposed between the mask, is roughened in the blasting treatment. An original stamper of the metal plate, having a partly roughened major surface, is obtained by the blasting treatment.

Abstract: This disclosure is directed to a method capable of maintaining the fatigue performance of a bone-engaging implant after surface texturing through the imparting of a residual compressive stress. A residual compressive stress is imparted via peening or another process. The peened surface is then roughened to improve mechanical adhesion for bone fixation via grit blasting or another process. The depth of penetration of the roughened texture is less than the depth of the residual compressive stress.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a steering rack for a vehicle rack and pinion steering system. The rack comprises gear teeth and a shank that has a constant outside diameter and constant wall thickness over the majority of its length. The method comprises performing a forging operation on a tubular member with an elongate member positioned in the bore of a thickened region of the tubular member. The forging operation forms the gear teeth on the thickened region, and the elongate member is retained within the tubular member. The tubular member is made by performing a forming operation on a length of tube stock such that the outside diameter of the thickened region is smaller than the outside diameter of the shank, and the wall thickness of the thickened region is larger than the wall thickness of the shank.

Abstract: The invention provides a method for fabricating a large sheet metal product having a three-dimensional shape such as a cover of a machine tool, without performing a welding process, and a product fabricated by the same. A cover unit 1 of a machine tool is fabricated by fixing to a circumference edge portion of a cover sheet 10 edge members 110, 120, 130, 210, 220, 230, 310 and 410 via fastening members such as bolts and nuts. The cover sheet 10 and each of the edge members are formed by nesting an expansion plan based on a three-dimensional solid model data of the cover unit 1 on a sheet metal material on a laser beam machine, and subjecting the same to laser processing. At this time, various information such as bend lines and bend angles required in the post process are marked off on each component via laser processing. The components having been subjected to high-precision laser processing are subjected to necessary bending process.
