Abstract: Presented is a telephony system capable of supporting and properly interfacing with a wide variety of telephones or station sets produced by various manufacturers, including analog, ISDN, proprietary digital, etc. This support is enabled through the inclusion of a telephone abstraction layer in the core telephony software that removes the detailed interface to a particular phone common in modern telephony systems. Telephone abstraction drivers for each type of phone receive the abstraction commands and information and translate them into commands and information for proper interfacing, display, signaling, functional assignment, etc. for that type of phone. The information provided from the abstraction layer may be more than the particular phone may be able to display, in which case the telephone abstraction drivers prioritize the information and send only what it deems appropriate to the station set.

Abstract: The L4 application in the switch is expanded to permit functions previously performed exclusively in the L5 protocol application. Moreover, the L4 application is programmable by the system operator so that the system operator may expand the predefined set of L4 call management operations to accommodate his call processing requirements. Overall supervision of the call-management operations was previously limited to the L5 applications. However, the ability to program the L4 application enables the system operator to decide which call processing operations will be managed by the L5 applications and which operations will be managed by the L4 application. The system operator may thus define, in the L4 application, a proprietary call model that instructs the switching node to manage all incoming calls, or the system operator may specify the call model on a channel by channel basis. The latter arrangement programs the switching node to use different call-processing protocols among the various channels.

Abstract: A private branch exchange (PBX) or other communication system switch processes a call to determine if an identifier associated with the call has a corresponding entry in a stored list of external endpoints registered with the switch. The switch directs the call to an external port of the switch for delivery to a given one of the external endpoints if the identifier associated with the call has a corresponding entry in the stored list of external endpoints registered with the switch. The given external endpoint does not have a fixed external port assignment in the switch. Instead, the switch dynamically selects from a set of external ports an available external port over which the call is directed to the given external endpoint. The dynamic selection of the available external port may be implemented using an automatic route selection (ARS) algorithm.

Abstract: In order to realize notification of an incoming call at a client terminal utilizing an existing extension switch system, an exchange of the extension switch system is linked with a server of client terminals such that notification of an incoming call to an extension is made also at a client terminal. Further, whether an incoming call to a client terminal is permitted or not can be changed depending on whether the client terminal is in a log-in state or not. Still further, notification of an incoming call to a client terminal is made by reproducing an audio file or the like to realize a flexible extension call. Further, a response to an incoming call at a client terminal is managed by a timer such that, in case of time out, an ordinary extension rings. Still further, the server is made to have alternative recipient information such that notification of an incoming call is transferred via the server.

  • Patent number: 6370136
Abstract: We have included a Dialing Plan Engine (DPE) software component in the SSL in order for other components in the SSL to access DPE services. The DPE allows the SSL object to ‘learn’ the dialing plan rules for a given network. Input strings are submitted from a SSO instance to the DPE. The DPE analyzes the strings, performs necessary modifications and operations and returns a result comprising commands or subsequent instructions to the SSO instance. The DPE analyzes the input string to identify which call formats, code prefix, and/or Supplementary services apply to the call. Examples of call format include local call format, domestic long distance call format, and service call. The DPE also recognizes user-dialed Carrier Identification Codes which enables the calls to be implemented by the identified carrier; it recognizes user-dialed errors such as, partial digits, and missing code prefix and it responds appropriately to these errors.

Abstract: A telephony call center has agent workstations having telephones connected to station-side ports of a telephone switching apparatus adapted to receive and switch conventional telephone calls to the telephones, and also computer platforms connected on a local area network (LAN). A processor also connected on the LAN has a wide area network (WAN) port and is adapted to receive and distribute computer-simulated telephone calls from the WAN to computer platforms at the agent stations. At individual agent stations the telephone and computer platform is connected by a Telephone Application Programming Interface (TAPI)-compliant bridge. Status of calls of both types at agent workstations is communicated to a network-level router by the processor having a WAN connection, which may also receive computer-simulated calls. The router may then make routing decisions based on agent status relative to both kinds of calls.

  • Patent number: 6324263
Abstract: A telephone system including improved automated routing of telephone calls based upon caller ID data. If caller ID data is received, it is used as a search key to search a routing table listing extensions normally called by one or more persons identified by their caller IDs. If a match is found, the call is automatically transferred to the extension or voice mail box listed in the routing table. In some embodiments, the caller is given options to block the automatic routing or block recording of a voice mail message in favor of transfer to a caller specified extension or to an attendant. Also disclosed is improved voice mail wherein a digital signal processor scans data to be recorded in a voice mail message to find DTMF tones or DTMF mimics in the voice data and removes them from the recording so that no false DTMF commands will be recognized during playback by any DTMF detector which is active during the playback.
