  • Patent number: 7909232
Abstract: A mold welded with a dissimilar metal member manufactured by pressingly bringing the dissimilar metal member into contact with a mold formed of copper or a copper alloy in a stationary state while rotating the dissimilar metal member at a high speed, stopping the dissimilar metal member, and providing a forced pressure larger than the pressure in the first step to the mold. The present mold solves the problems of efficient cooling and attachment of back frame. Also, a variety of problems including cutting processing loss of copper or copper alloy plate, long processing times, heat distortion and heat deterioration of copper plates, etc, can be solved. Further, welding position precision and welding strength of stud bolts can be improved. Finally, the invention concerns a mold welded with a dissimilar metal member where the mold is manufactured by the first step shown above.

Abstract: Continuously casting a billet with a small cross section by pouring molten steel into a mold using a cylindrical immersion nozzle is characterized by measuring the molten steel level in the mold using an eddy current sensor. The level is controlled based on the thus-measured value, motion of steel in the mold is adjusted by electromagnetic stirring, a cooling zone during the final period of solidification is disposed within a certain region ranging from the meniscus to the specific site, and casting speed is adjusted so that the region in which the solid phase ratio at the billet center is 0.3-0.99 may be included in the cooling zone during the final period of solidification. The secondary cooling water amount and the billet surface temperature at the entrance to the cooling zone the density of cooling water in the cooling zone during the final period of solidification are optimized.

Abstract: A water-cooled mold for continuous casting includes two water-cooled wide copper plates arranged opposite to each other in a front and back direction and two water-cooled narrow copper plates arranged opposite to each other in a left and right direction. The upper portion of the cavity of the mold is a sprue area and the lower portion of the cavity is a mold cavity area. The sprue area is gradually narrowed in the casting direction and smoothly transited into the mold cavity, corresponding to the shape of a slab to be cast. The inside surfaces of the water-cooled narrow copper plates are smooth planar surfaces. A portion of the inside surface of the water-cooled wide copper plates in the sprue area is a curved surface and another portion in the mold cavity area is a planar surface. Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the invention relate to a side dam block for a continuous metal caster apparatus. The block comprises a body of molten metal resistant material having a metal-contacting surface. The metal contacting surface has a plurality of indentations therein, the indentations having openings at the metal-contacting surface dimensioned to prevent penetration of molten metal into the indentations under casting conditions. Due to a smaller area of direct contact between the molten metal and the surfaces of the blocks, the blocks extract less heat from the molten metal than conventional blocks and help to reduce so-called “dog-bone” and “sink” type deformation of the cast article.

Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the invention provide a side dam for a continuous metal casting apparatus having elongated opposed casting surfaces forming a casting cavity. The side dam has an elongated upstream part and an elongated downstream part that are mutually laterally pivotable, and a smooth metal-contacting side surface extending continuously from an upstream end to a downstream end of the side dam. • Patent number: 7222658
Abstract: A die cavity of a casting die, such as for continuously casting billets, blooms and blanks. The die cavity has a cross-section with a partially curved peripheral line, whereby, with the cavity walls cooled, provides improved heat exchange between a forming strand shell and the die cavity wall, thus avoiding solidification defects in the strand shell. The degree of curvature 1/R is reduced at least on part of the curved peripheral line of the corner regions from peripheral lines of the same corner regions, that are successive in the casting direction, and at least over part of the length of the die, in the concave corner regions of the die cavity, in order to control the targeted closure of the gap between the strand shell and the cooled die cavity, or a targeted strand shell deformation.

Abstract: A chill tube (1) having a double T-shaped inner and outer cross section in beam blank format is encased in a water-guiding jacket (12) adapted to its outer contour while forming a water gap (14). The wall thickness (D) of chill tube (1) in the rounded transition regions (2) from middle crosspieces (4), which face each other head to head and are drawn in towards longitudinal axis (3), to the neighboring crosswise positioned flanges (5) is dimensioned at least partially smaller than in the remaining wall sections (6, 7). The reduction in wall thickness is implemented by longitudinal hollow recesses (8). These recesses (8) extend only in the height range of the bath level. Into the cross sectional regions which are formed by the outer contour of chill tube (1) as well as the inner contour of water-guiding jacket (12), filler pieces (17) are incorporated, adapted to this cross section.
