  • Patent number: 6340049
Abstract: A device for continuous or semi-continuous casting of metal comprising a cooled mold (22) and an induction coil (10) arranged at the top end of the mold. The mold comprises in its top end a plurality of hollow, old segments (22a, 22b, 22c, 22d, 22e, 22f, 22′b, 22′c, 22′d) separated from each other by partitions (26a, 26b, 26c, 26d, 26e), which all comprise an electrically insulating barrier. Both the mold segments and the partitions are oriented essentially in the casting direction. Each hollow top end mold segment comprises a core of a mechanically supporting bar or beam (25a, 25b, 25c, 25d, 25e, 25f, 25′a, 25′b, 25′c, 25′d, 25′e, 25′f) arranged within the hollow mold segment such that it is surrounded by the hollow mold segment. The core exhibits superior mechanical properties in relation to the mold.

  • Patent number: 6340048
Abstract: A mold suitable for continuous metal casting comprising a cavity opened at both ends, in which a vertical cross sectional shape at the inner wall surface of the cavity from a meniscus position to a required region is formed as a restriction portion corresponding to the amount of shrinkage of a charged material from a liquid phase to a solid phase. This can prevent internal cracks at the corners of a cast product formed in the chilled layer. Then, a mold for use in continuous metal casting capable of coping with increasing casting rate is provided.

  • Publication number: 20010052407
Abstract: A substantially rectangular-section casting conduit of an ingot mold, for continuous casting of molten metal, is divided into two portions; a first portion has a variable inner section, by having rounded inner edges with a radius of curvature decreasing gradually in the flow direction of the molten metal along the conduit; the second portion is consecutive with the first portion, and has a constant inner section with rounded inner edges of a predetermined optimum radius of curvature for subsequent rolling operations. The design of the first portion of the casting conduit prevents the metal, as it cools and contracts through the conduit, from detaching from the walls, and in particular from the edges, of the mold, thus enabling an increase in casting speed with no fall in product quality.

Abstract: Improved targets for use in DC_magnetron sputtering of aluminum or like metals are disclosed for forming metallization films having low defect densities. Methods for manufacturing and using such targets are also disclosed. Conductivity anomalies such as those composed of metal oxide inclusions can induce arcing between the target surface and the plasma. The arcing can lead to production of excessive deposition material in the form of splats or blobs. Reducing the content of conductivity anomalies and strengthening the to-be-deposited material is seen to reduce production of such splats or blobs. Other splat limiting steps include smooth finishing of the target surface and low-stress ramp up of the plasma.

The upper surface is divided by the partition walls into a multiplicity of segmental surfaces. A forming starter member is brought into contact with the partition member so that the molten material adheres to a starter surface of the forming starter member, and is then separated from the partition member. Abstract: The invention concerns a mold for a continuous casting system with a shaping mold tube made of a material with high thermal conductivity. To reduce the rate of heat removal at the height of the meniscus that forms within the mold cavity, the exterior of the mold tube is provided with a plating of a material of lower thermal conductivity than that of the mold tube. This results in reduced heat flow with higher temperatures in the meniscus area and in improvement in the surface quality of the cast billet.

Abstract: A continuous casting having a mold for producing strands in the form of slabs, thin slabs, blooms, and billets which results in a central running of the strand in the entire strand guide and in highly reliable casting at casting speeds of up to 6m/min. As a result of the cambered, concave shape of the mold and entire strand guide, the strand is guided coaxially to the entire strand guide from the cast surface until the strand exits at the delivery end of the continuous casting machine so that sideways movement of the entire strand in the direction of one of the narrow sides (snaking) is suppressed.

Abstract: A continuous casting mold for casting a billet with a polygonal cross section has side walls delimiting a mold space with a polygonal cross section and the side walls have a center region extending from an open top end to an open bottom or exit end of the mold with a first degree of taper and, at the sides of the center regions, abutting side regions with a lesser degree of taper than the first degree. In order to obtain even growth of the casting shell with low frictional forces, the center region has a degree of taper which is greater than the amount from the billet contraction and the width of the side regions increases as the distance from the exit end of the continuous casting mold decreases.

  • Patent number: 5797444
Abstract: An ingot mold for the continuous casting of metals. The mold has a mold cavity that is open at opposing ends. The cross-sectional area at the casting pour-in-side is larger than the cross-sectional area of the end from which the billet emerges. To achieve higher casting performance and attain better billet quality via more uniform temperature distribution over the casting cross-section, the mold cavity has multiple conical depressions on an outer cooling surface. These depressions, which are arrayed over at least one area, constitute a region defining elevated heat transfer coefficients. The cooling-side surface in the bath level area of the ingot mold has a roughened structure over part of its surface, the roughened structure tapering in the casting direction.

Abstract: A plant for producing hot-rolled steel strip in a production line includes a continuous slab casting plant, transverse cutting shears, a continuous furnace and a hot-rolling train. The continuous furnace includes a first stationary section and a second section formed with two moveable furnaces, wherein the moveable furnaces can be moved transversely between the production line and a lateral holding position. The length of the first furnace section corresponds to at least the length of the distance which is travelled at casting speed by the newly formed front end of the cast slab by transverse cutting from the transverse cutting unit to a point in front of that moveable furnace which is located in the production line after the exchange of moveable furnaces has been carried out.

Abstract: A continuous casting mold for producing strands in the form of slabs, thin slabs, blooms, and billets resulting in highly reliable casting at casting speeds of up to 6 m/min. The cambered shape of the mold causes the strand to be centered during casting by the mold so that sideways movement of the strand shell toward one of the narrow sides (snaking) is suppressed or moderated. This symmetrical running of the strand shell box during casting in the mold results in a uniform symmetrical formation of the strand shell and its temperature field (isotherms), the withdrawal forces, and the loading of the strand shell in relation to the strand axis in the casting direction, even despite weaving of the strand in the region of the strand guide.

  • Patent number: 5716510
Abstract: A wall of a four-piece mold is made by machining cooling channels into one side of a steel backup member. The cooling channels are filled with wax which is then covered with conductive paint or tape. A layer of copper is now electroplated onto the side of the backup member with the cooling channels, and nickel and chromium are plated over the copper in succession. Upon completion of plating, the wax is removed from the cooling channels by melting the wax. Alternatively to machining the cooling channels into the backup member, strips of plastic are adhesively secured to the backup member prior to plating. The plastic strips, which have widths and heights equal to the desired widths and depths of the cooling channels, are placed on the backup member at the intended locations of the cooling channels. Copper is plated onto the backup member to the height of the strips which are then removed to form the cooling channels.
