Patent number: 5437387Abstract: A container for transporting and storing vessels containing hazardous liquids and a method for making such a container. The container has a cylindrical housing and a cap that screws into the mouth of the housing and is locked by a latch. When the cap is screwed into place, an elastomeric sealing ring on the cap is compressed against the housing to provide a liquid-tight seal between the housing and cap. Interlocking hook-shaped members that project from the housing and from a central location of the latch act as a fulcrum on which the latch can be pivoted. Under the bias of a serpentine tongue, a locking member that projects from an end of the latch protrudes through a bore in the housing and is adapted to be received by a hole in the cap, thus locking the cap until the other end of the lever is depressed to disengage the locking member from the hole of the cap.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1993Date of Patent: August 1, 1995Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventor: James A. Patent number: 5415316Abstract: A fuel tank comprises a rotationally molded tank wall having a recessed neck unitarily formed with the tank wall during the rotational molding process. The neck receives a correspondingly threaded cap so that a top surface of the cap remains substantially at the level of the tank wall surface when a stem on the cap is threadedly engaged in the correspondingly threaded neck of the tank. In addition, a process for recessing a fill cap in a fuel tank comprises rotational molding of a plastic powder to form a hollow body within at least two mold parts. An insert carried by the one of the mold parts forms a threaded neck recessed inwardly from the tank wall surface. In addition, the process molds a cap with a handle having a top surface at the level of the tank wall surface.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1993Date of Patent: May 16, 1995Assignee: C&V Leasing, Inc.Inventors: Clifford H. Patent number: 5348182Abstract: A fitment to be attached to an apertured wall of a container or the like is initially formed (as by plastic molding) with a thin cylindrical plastic molding) with a thin cylindrical wall dimensioned to fit inside the aperture in the container. A flange is formed on the exterior of the cylindrical wall to fit against the exterior of the container wall, surrounding the aperture therein. Preferably the flange slants downward-outward. A curling tool is forced against the end of cylindrical wall, curling it outward-upward to fit tightly against the interior of the container wall opposite the flange, thereby crimping the fitment to the container. Curling of the cylindrical wall may be performed either before or after the fitment is installed on the carton. The fitment is formed to be closed by a cap and preferably to engage the cap in a tamper-evident manner. In a preferred form of the invention the cap and fitment are initially molded as a unitary member.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1992Date of Patent: September 20, 1994Assignee: Portola Packaging, Inc.Inventor: Daniel Luch

Patent number: 5297693Abstract: A closure member for sealing an opening for a cavity in a housing to prevent fluid from being communicated to the surrounding environment. The closure member has a shaft with an end member having a irregular radial surface thereon. A first torque is applied to the irregular surface to move threads into corresponding threads in the housing to join the closure member to the housing. A self locking fastener has as stem with threads that extend from a head that engages the housing when a second torque is applied to the head. A washer retained on the stem engages the irregular surface and deforms as the second torque is applied to the head. The deformation prevents relative rotation to thereafter occur between the closure member and housing to assure that the opening in the cavity remains sealed.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1992Date of Patent: March 29, 1994Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventor: Russell C. Patent number: 4930648Abstract: A triple sealing outlet for use in plastic containers comprises a first cylindrical surface, preferably threaded, extending from an outer wall of the container; a flat, annular surface perpendicular to the first surface and lying within the wall; and a second cylindrical surface of smaller diameter, parallel to the first surface and perpendicular to the flat annular surface, extending from an inner collar which is part of the inner wall of the container. These three surfaces are adapted to engage and mate with three corresponding surfaces of a connector, or of an appropriately designed valve, to provide fluid tight seals.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1989Date of Patent: June 5, 1990Assignee: Essex Environmental Industries, Inc.Inventor: Gary W. Moisture impervious carton having one-piece pouring spout sealed to innermost and outermost surfaces
Patent number: 4909434Abstract: A liquid-containing paperboard laminate carton including a one-piece plastic spout having a pair of opposing flanges sealed about an aperture in one of the carton walls to both the innermost and outermost surfaces of the carton wall. The double flange configuration not only forms a mechanically positive interlock between the plastic spout and the carton wall, but even more importantly, isolates the cut edges of the aperture from exposure to liquid either from within the container or from the environment through which the carton must pass from the point of manufacture until it is ready for disposal after its contents have been consumed. The spout preferably includes a liquid passageway having a membrane-type seal across its discharge orifice to provide evidence of tampering and a resealable closure member such as a screw cap or a snap-on closure held in place by means of a mating ring or groove on the spout.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1988Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: Donald E. Patent number: 4905862Abstract: A lightweight metal protective closure for covering the threaded dispensing openings in steel shipping drums during the drum exterior painting process. The closure is formed as a shallow cup having a bottom wall surrounded by an upstanding sidewall. The sidewall is formed with a single embossed thread and terminates in a circumferentially extending radially fluted lip. The lip is contoured to closely overlie and protect the exposed top surfaces of the upstanding opening neck from deleterious paint coverage leaving the lower neck surfaces exposed.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1988Date of Patent: March 6, 1990Assignee: American Flange & Manufacturing Co. Patent number: 4854471Abstract: A fuel cap comprises a cap body, a flange member projecting outward in radial direction on upper side of the cap body, and a weak portion which is easily broken and provided at the flange member and enables separation of the flange member from the cap body. The weak portion is formed by a plurality of V-like grooves at upper surface side which are formed on the upper surface of the flange member in concentric relation and a plurality of V-like grooves at lower surface side which are formed on the lower surface of the flange member in concentric relation and adjacent to the V-like grooves at upper surface side.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1988Date of Patent: August 8, 1989Assignees: Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd., Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Joji Kasugai, Satoshi Toki, Masayuki Ide
