Abstract: A cap includes a closure portion rotatably engaging the filler neck for closing the filler neck and an outer shell for providing a hand grip to permit rotation of the cap about an axis. A clutch is included in the cap for selectively providing an operative connection between the outer shell and the closure portion so that rotation of the outer shell relative to the filler neck in a cap-removal direction will rotate the closure portion in the cap-removal direction. An actuator is provided for activating the clutch means. The actuator is reciprocable relative to the outer shell in operative directions substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the outer shell to control activation of the clutch.

  • Patent number: 4830273
Abstract: A paperboard carton for containing and pouring liquid has a pour spout fitment adhesively secured to its upper surface and at least partially over a reinforcing patch on said upper surface to spread the upward force exerted by opening the fitment over an area of the carton surface larger than the bottom surface of the fitment so as to prevent the fitment from being torn away from the carton surface. In addition to the force distribution, the tensile strength of the added patch material is much greater than the strength of the carton coating, thus this new patch material becomes the primary seal.

  • Patent number: 4790449
Abstract: In a filler neck cap including a screw body and a cap, the cap comprises two members of a cover portion and an annular thin latching member so as to enable different materials, each of which exercise optimumly functions necessary to the respective members. In one example with respect to a combination of preferred materials, the cover portion of the cap and the screw body may be formed from polyacetal resin, but the annular thin latching member interposed therebetween may be formed from polyamide resin; the safety plastic filler neck cap may be manufactured from the combination of these synthetic resins, which is designed to be capable of controlling the screwing torque and of stabilizing the cap dislodgement. According to the present invention, there can be provided the comfortably operable filler neck cap increasing the dimensional stability of the cap and eliminating the grating noise during the cap opening-closing operations.

  • Patent number: 4768677
Abstract: The invention relates to a fuel tank cap comprising a body, the upper portion of which is provided with a hole. Said hole exhibits a plurality of concave or convex sections which are formed along the inner periphery of the hole. A cover comprises a sleeve, which is formed on the inner periphery of the cover for insertion into the hole of the body, and has a plurality of axial slits. The sleeve is provided with a plurality of convex or concave sections formed along its outer periphery so as to mate with the concave or convex sections of the hole, respectively. When a clamping torque applied on the cap exceeds a predetermined value, an idle-rotation mechanism is established between the sleeve and the hole. The gas ampoule having a glass tube with serum bottle stopper on one end and a plunger tip in the opposite end all fitting in a larger plastic tube threaded on each end with absorbent between the tubes, is seated onto the internal needle assembly via a bushing associated with the plunger and locked into the syringe barrel via barrel-bushing locking caps. The design practically eliminates the possibility of personnel contamination due to an inadvertent exposure of such personnel to the contained radioactive gas.

  • Patent number: 4610372
Abstract: A molded thermoplastic linerless or self-sealing closure for use with a small container having a thin and accurately formed finish, such as a disposable glass or plastic culture tube. The closure has a top panel and an integrally formed depending annular skirt, and the annular skirt has an inwardly projecting helical thread to permit the closure to be screwed onto and off of a container with a threaded finish. The closure top panel has a thick central portion which is depressed below the top of the closure skirt and a thin annular portion that extends radially outwardly and upwardly from the central portion to the top of the closure skirt. The underside of the closure engages the rim of the container in a pocket formed by the annular portion and the annular skirt, and seals partially on the top of the rim and partially on the inside of it, with the thinness of the annular portion contributing to the deformability of the closure to help provide the required seal with the container.

Abstract: A high pressure vessel (19), having a curved end piece (22) and an access plug (20) threaded into a recessed hole (26) in the end piece and sealed therein by a weld (46) disposed around the periphery of the plug, is provided with an annular lip (28) around the access hole. The flask lip has a sloped surface (34) that cooperates with the lip (38) of a cap (36) that is clamped to the vessel so that the clamping force on the cap is directed by the sloped surface through the weld to precompress the weld, thereby relieving the tensile stresses on the weld which result from pressure inside the vessel acting inside the hemispherical end piece of the vessel.

  • Patent number: 4588103
Abstract: A closure and boss combination for providing an internally threaded outlet in a drum end includes a raised metal boss formed in the drum end and configured with a pair of concentric axially extending annular walls connected by an annular ring-shaped top surface. Securely crimped within the raised metal boss is a synthetic material closure which includes an internal series of threads surrounded by a crimping flange which includes on its outer diameter surface a series of serrations configured with alternating recesses and protruding portions. The flange includes an interior support surface which is substantially concentric with the outer surface of the serrations and the inner, axially extending wall portion of the boss is contiguous with this inner support surface in order to provide back-up support and preclude close-in of the closure and distortion of the closure threads during the crimping operation and during subsequent stress-inducing operations such as exposure to high-temperature sources.

  • Patent number: 4585136
Abstract: Attachment of a ring, particularly a metal ring (2), to an article which has walls or skirts (1) of fibre-reinforced resin material. The ring has a plurality of external grooves (3, 4, 5, 6). The skirt comprises, for each groove in sequence, a first (32, 36, 37, 40) and second (33, 38, 39, 41) layer of fibre-reinforced resin material. The fibres in the first layer have a substantial orientation in directions parallel with the axis of the ring and extend from the skirt into the respective grooves. Overlying the first layer is a second layer comprising hoop windings from the skirt towards the groove. The second layer lies at least partly in the groove to lock the first layer in the groove. This layering is repeated for each groove and finally successive hoop windings (45, 46, 47, 48) are wound over the entire article. This is useful for attaching end rings to rocket motor cases or for attaching rings to pressure vessels to define an aperture.

  • Patent number: 4582217
Abstract: A hermetically sealable fluid containment assembly is provided. Fluids, such as compressed gases, are typically stored in a base container having a shoulder with a neck projecting outwardly from the shoulder. In accordance with the invention, a collar member generally surrounds the neck and rests upon the shoulder of the base container. A locking arrangement is provided to securely fasten the collar member to the base container. A closure member in the form of a protective cap engages the collar member. To prevent the leakage of fluid between the collar and the base container, a seal is provided between respectively engaging surfaces of the base container and the collar. The leakage of gas between the collar member and the closure member is also prevented by a second seal disposed between respective engaging surfaces of the closure member and the collar member.
