  • Patent number: 4513865
Abstract: A disposable oil drain pan and container combination features a large sidewall opening which is sealed by a removable screw cap. The oil pan and container combination is intended for use as (a) a container for new motor oil for purchase at a retail establishment, and (b) a disposable drain pan receptacle for use in changing oil in an automobile. The capacity of the container is preferably five quarts so that its contents can be emptied directly into the crankcase of an automobile during an oil change. After the contents have been emptied into the crankcase, the container assembly is set aside until time for the next oil change. At that time, the large screw cap is removed from the side of the container and the container is laid flat beneath the crank case so that the used oil can drain directly into the container through the sidewall opening. After the draining procedure has been completed, the cap is screwed on securely so that the filled container can be discarded.

  • Patent number: 4491237
Abstract: A replaceable inspection plug assembly and method for its use with pressure vessels. The plug assembly comprises a collar seal welded onto a pressure vessel outer wall, and a threaded plug removably threaded into the collar and the vessel wall. The plug has a shoulder portion which is seal welded to the collar. For removal of the plug, the seal weld is first machined away using a special cup-shaped rotary machining tool. The plug is then cooled and contracted relative to the collar, and is then unscrewed and removed. Following inspection of the vessel interior, the plug is replaced in the threaded hole and the plug shoulder portion is rewelded to the collar to provide a structurally-rigid and leak-tight joint without need for subsequent stress relieving the welded joint.

  • Patent number: 4473169
Abstract: Disclosed are plugs and fasteners which deter unauthorized removal through the use of rotationally symmetric engagement recesses. The invention also provides special tools with projections complementary to the plug and fastener recesses and thereby permit easy removal of the plugs and fasteners without damage. An exemplary embodiment of an inventive plug contains a two-stage recess in lieu of the standard hexagonal head; each of the recess stages is rotationally symmetric, and the two stages have non-coinciding symmetry axes. The rotational symmetry of the recess stages defeats any attempt to remove an inserted plug by forcing commonly available tools, such as hex or square drivers and blade or Phillips screwdrivers, into the recess. An inventive tool for use with this embodiment has a two-stage projection complementary to the recess.

  • Patent number: 4458823
Abstract: A fuel cap has a cover-handgripping portion and a threaded closure portion, which portions are maintained in assembly by a ring member. The ring member has integrally molded therewith a plurality of outwardly extending flexible fingers in a hinged relationship. The closure portion is inserted in the ring member prior to assembly within the handgripping portion. At assembly, the fingers of the ring member pivot inwardly at the hinge position to become engaged with an annular groove formed in the handgripping portion. The movement of the fingers results in an inner portion of the ring member being displaced to form a support shelf for the threaded closure. Engagement of the fingers with the groove portion of the handgrip prevents removal of the ring and therefore the closure member from the handgripping portion.

Abstract: In the final storage of radioactive substances in containers, these containers must be sealed so as to be gas-tight by means of a cover, before they are taken to the final storage place. In order to avoid thermal stress, which has up till now been customary, of the radioactive substances on the one hand and of the container and cover on the other hand, it is proposed that the container and the sealing cover should be suitably ground on their seating areas which cooperate with each other, and when the container is closed the cover is held by prestressing on the seating area of the container. In a preferred method, after grinding, a thin equalizing layer of a highly corrosion-resistant, deformable material is applied to at least one of the seating surfaces of the container and cover, in order to achieve a compensation for any roughness which may be present, which will improve the sealing, depending on the technically and/or economically possible extent of the grinding.

Both the fitting and the closure have cooperable buttress-type threads which are dimensioned such that there is a relatively loose fit between the two parts. The closure has a centering shoulder which is engaged by the rim of the fitting whereby a self-centering of the closure takes place when it is screwed into the fitting. The loose fit and the sliding engagement of the flat surfaces of the buttress-type threads enable an unimpeded lateral shifting of the closure to occur as determined by the engagement of the centering shoulder on the closure and the rim of the fitting.

  • Patent number: 4195750
Abstract: A flange for a container opening has an internally threaded aperture to receive a plug, and a plurality of external serrations in a circularly spaced-apart relationship around the periphery of the upper portion of the flange. The plug is externally threaded and, when mated with the flange, closes the aperture. Both the flange and the plug are molded out of plastic material as single integral components. On the lower portion of the flange is an annular lip which is positioned beneath and extends radially beyond the external serrations. A container suitable for the flange has a boss around the container opening in a wall (usually the end wall) of the container. The boss is formed with internal serrations equal in number to the number of external serrations on the flange. This boss can be crimped onto the flange placed in the opening, such that the two groups of serrations permanently interlock with one another thereby securely locking the flange into the container.
