Removable Closure Guided In Rotary Movement (e.g., Screw) Patents (Class 220/288)
  • Patent number: 6116285
Abstract: A removable plug for an internally threaded opening has particular application in a system for closing an opening in the sidewall of a pipe. The system includes a nipple having an inner end attached, such as by welding, to a pipe, and an outer end having internal threads. A short length externally threaded cylindrical plug body is threadably positionable within the nipple outer end, the plug body having a recess in a top surface thereof. An insert is affixed within the plug body recess providing an operating space within the recess below the insert, the insert being formed of a metal plate having a tool receiving central opening therethrough and at least one integral tang portion extending downwardly into the plug body operating space, the insert being secured, such as by welding to the plug body. The insert central opening is shaped in a geometrical pattern, such as a square, to slidably and non-rotatably receive a plug engaging portion of a driver of matching cross-sectional configuration.

Abstract: A fuel tank cap structure and method of manufacturing which prevents a parting line formed on a cover member in the process of injection molding from being undesirably shaven. The fuel tank cap includes a casing body and a cover member that is rotatable in one direction relative to the casing body via a ratchet mechanism when a torque of or above a predetermined level is applied to the cover member. The cover member has fitting projections that are held by an outer ring member of the casing body. A slide mold is used for manufacturing the cover member having the fitting projections that are undercut in the injection molding. This causes a parting line to be formed on a top wall of the cover member. Anti-shaving projections formed at substantially the same height as that of the parting line prevent the parting line from being slid against the outer ring member and shaven.

The four discharge projections are arranged in a third radial direction that has an angle of 45 degrees with respect to both a first radial direction and a second radial direction. The first radial direction, in which a handle member of the cover member is arranged, gives the maximum contraction of the cover member, whereas the second radial direction gives the minimum contraction of the cover member. This molded asphalt/polymer material preferably has an unnotched Izod impact strength of at least 2 joules. The container is consumable--it can be melted along with roofing asphalt held in the container without adversely affecting the properties of the asphalt and without requiring undue mixing. The composition also can be used to reduce fumes normally emitted from a kettle of molten asphalt, e.g., as measured by a reduction of the visual opacity of the fumes by at least 25%, a reduction of the hydrocarbon emissions of the fumes by at least 20%, or a reduction of the total suspended particulates emissions of the fumes by at least 15%. The container may be used, e.g.

  • Patent number: 5680953
Abstract: A closure assembly for a shipping and storage drum where the drum includes an internally threaded plastic outlet for receipt of the closure assembly includes a plastic closure having a generally cylindrical main body portion which is externally threaded and which constitutes the leading edge of threaded engagement into the outlet. Disposed at the upper end of the main body portion and integral therewith is an annular, peripheral flange the underside of which is shaped with an annular groove which is designed to receive an elastomeric gasket. The annular groove has an outwardly inclined outer wall and a generally cylindrical inner wall. The gasket is held in position as part of the closure by an interference fit between the inside surface of the gasket and the inner cylindrical wall of the groove. The plastic outlet of the shipping and storage drum includes a generally cylindrical raised rib and outward thereto and concentric therewith a generally cylindrical raised wall.

  • Patent number: 5678735
Abstract: A rupturable stopper for a pouring spout for a receptacle includes a base having a pouring zone sealed closed by a cover connected to the base by frangible connection. The spout includes a tubular neck having internal screw threads connected to the base so as to surround the frangible connection and terminating at a pouring lip. A cylindrical appendage extending up from the cover lies concentrically within the neck and receives a closure cap thereon that includes screw threads engageable with the neck and a seal that engages a spout pouring lip when the cap is engaged with the spout neck. Interlocking elements between the cap and the appendage prevent reverse rotation of the cap relative to the appendage so that, once the cap is secured in place within the neck by the screw threads, the first attempt to remove the cap drives the appendage in a twisting and axial movement to cause rupture of the frangible connection to open the pouring zone of the base.

Abstract: A reusable collapsible container includes a bottom wall and a relatively flexible, peripheral side wall extending upwardly from the bottom wall, the side wall movable between axially extended and collapsed positions. The side wall includes lower and upper relatively thicker portions and an intermediate relatively thinner portion, and the upper portion joins with an annular rim adapted to receive a removable cap. The intermediate side wall portion is tapered radially inwardly and downwardly, and the lower side wall portion is tapered radially outwardly and downwardly substantially to the bottom wall, such that in a collapsed position, the lower side wall portion is partially telescoped within the upper side wall portion, with the intermediate portion reverse folded therebetween.

Abstract: A container includes an angled sidewall with a non-overlapping thread. A lid has a lid sidewall set at the same angle as the container sidewall. The angle is between 12.degree. and 18.degree. from vertical and creates a strong connection when the two pieces are screwed together. In one embodiment, the container is a compact disc holder capable of holding a compact disc free from interference and damage. A top piece (lid) of the compact disc holder screws down on a bottom piece but maintains pressure on the compact disc to hold the disc between a pedestal on the bottom piece and a stabilizer disposed on the top piece.
