Contact Seal Between Parts Of Internal Combustion Engine Patents (Class 277/591)
  • Patent number: 6502830
Abstract: A metallic gasket installed between confronting surfaces of engine components is improved in heat conduction between the components so as to reduce the adverse thermal influence to the engine. The metallic gasket used between the confronting surfaces of, for example a cylinder head and a cylinder block is composed of an annular raised portion defining inside a gas hole in alignment with an associated cylinder bore, and a surrounding metallic sheet connected to the annular raised portion. Both the annular raised portion and the surrounding metallic sheet are made of aluminum material to render the heat conduction between the components efficient. Thus the improved gasket can reduce the adverse thermal influence such as thermal deformation, thermal stress, and so on, whether the components are made of different materials or same materials.

Abstract: For manufacturing a seal between two machine parts (10, 11) which together enclose a space (14) in which, at least at times, high pressure and/or high temperature prevail, sealing means which contain a curable composition (30) are arranged between the two machine parts (10, 11). The curable composition (30) is applied directly onto one or both machine parts (10, 11) in liquid form at least in the area which does not directly adjoin the space (14) in which, at least at times, high temperature and/or high pressure prevails. The two machine parts are built in before the curing of composition (30). A sealing ring can be inserted between the two machine parts (10, 11) directly around the edge of the high pressure and high temperature space (14) or that edge can be slightly raised and the curable composition (30) can be used for sealing outside this area.

Abstract: A gasket is provided for filling the space between two mating surfaces on components in an automotive transmission. The gasket includes one or more patches of silicone integrated into a portion of the gasket for providing one or more channels through the gasket, having leak proof seals at the ends of the channel. Bolt passage holes are spaced in the gasket to register with corresponding bolt holes in the mating surfaces. A channel aperture passes through the portion of the gasket augmented with the silicone patch, providing a channel between the mating surfaces. The ends of the channel define leak proof seals between the gasket and the mating surfaces for providing a leak proof fluid flow channel between the mating surfaces.

Abstract: An exhaust manifold gasket for sealing between an exhaust header and a first mating flange includes a metal layer having at least two integral tabs formed on an outer periphery of the metal layer. The first mating flange further includes at least two apertures located within the first outer periphery that are correspondingly sized and positioned to receive the tabs. In one embodiment each tab comprises two contoured, resilient legs separated to form a vertical slot between the legs, and a contoured tip located at a distal end of each tab leg. The contoured tip includes a sloped portion that slopes laterally outwardly from the distal end of each tab leg along an outside edge of each tab leg and terminates in a laterally outwardly extending protrusion for providing a tight interference fit when inserted into a corresponding aperture. In another embodiment, each tab includes a serrated resilient edge that promotes tab insertion, but digs into an inner periphery of the aperture upon attempted tab removal.

Abstract: A monolayer metal gasket is disclosed, which may be kept against deformation around a bolt hole and further made stable in sealing stress around a gas hole between mating surfaces of confronting components. A first extra thickness around the gas hole is provided by turning back a part of a metallic sheet on a major flat of the metallic sheet, with leaving a space open between them to form a folded construction having elasticity. A second extra thickness around a bolt hole is a closely layered construction of nearly rigid body little to be deformed. When the monolayer metal gasket is squeezed between the mating surfaces of the confronting components, a clearance between the mating surfaces may be regulated to a preselected distance by virtue of the second extra thickness that is little to be deformed.
