  • Patent number: 6492889
Abstract: An electromagnetic actuator for efficiently moving an objective lens along a focusing direction and a tracking direction. The electromagnetic actuator includes a flux generator, a first set of coils, a second set of coils and a magnetic piece. A first magnetic part and a second magnetic part of the flux generator are placed within a gap for generating smooth magnetic lines of force. The first set of coils moves the objective lens along the focusing direction. The second set of coils provide micro rotation around a shaft to the objective lens, and magnetic pieces are placed in the magnetic circuit adjacent to the gap. The objective lens holder is held at the neutral position relating focusing and tracking directions while the magnetic attraction forces are acting on the magnetic pieces.

Abstract: A superconducting magnet apparatus. By forming one or more holes in each of platelike ferromagnetic substances forming a magnetic shield for focusing the magnetic flux generated by superconducting coils, the flow of lines of magnetic flux is adjusted. Thereby, a static magnetic field in a measurement space is corrected. By disposing coupling tubes for supporting two cooling vessels housing superconducting coils on the rear side with respect to a central axis (Z axis) of the measurement space of the vertical direction, access to the subject is facilitated. In addition, the magnetic shield has an opening portion wider than the superconducting magnet on its side face. After the magnetic shield has been assembled, the superconducting magnet can be inserted from the opening portion.

The piston is held in place and magnetized by a plurality of permanent magnets. Abstract: The invention relates to a method for driving and measuring the position of an electromagnetic actuator that operates according to the voice coil principle. The coil thus moves within a magnetized gap relative to permanent magnet core. As the coil extends partially outside of the core, its inductance will change. The voice coil is connected to a controllable current source that can both generate and control an average current and an AC component through the voice coil. The frequency of the AC component is measured, and is a function of the instantaneous inductance of coil, which in turn is a function of the coil's position relative to the core. In an alternative embodiment, the phase shift between an AC current and an AC voltage through the coil is analyzed to determine the position of the coil, while simultaneously controlling the force.

Abstract: A core of a solenoid actuator is provided which is improved in durability and at the same time ensures high energy efficiency of the solenoid actuator. The core of the solenoid actuator attracts an armature during operation of the solenoid actuator. A plurality of core plates are formed of a magnetically soft material and laminated in a predetermined direction orthogonal to a direction of attracting the armature to form a laminated stack. The core plates form magnetic circuits between the armature and the core plates themselves during the operation of the solenoid actuator. Two core holders formed of a non-magnetic material sandwiches the laminated stack of the plurality of core plates from opposite sides along the predetermined direction. The plurality of core plates are each coated with insulating film, which insulate adjacent two core plates from each other.

Abstract: A micromechanical switch having a plurality of stable positions, which can be driven between the stable positions with a minimum of residual oscillation. The low oscillation results from the application of a braking force of specific magnitude and duration to exactly cancel the excess energy imparted to the switch during actuation. The braking algorithm results in a faster settling time, thereby improving the performance of the switch.

  • Patent number: 6351051
Abstract: Moving a panel on a microelectromechanical system by generating a magnetic force that acts on the panel is disclosed. The panel is formed on, or coupled to, a substrate so as to be able to move between first and second positions. The panel includes an electrically conductive region, such as a metallic ring or sheet, or a doped polysilicon layer. An electrical coil is also located on the substrate and coupled to a power source that can generate time-varying current. When a time-varying current is conducted through the coil, a magnetic flux is generated in the coil that induces an electromotive force (emf) in the panel that, in turn, generates a magnetic flux having a direction that is opposite the magnetic flux in the coil. The opposing magnetic fluxes create a repulsive magnetic force that urges the panel to move away from the coil. A flat spring is provided to hold the panel in a desired position and provide a drag force on the panel as it moves.
