Navigation Patents (Class 701/400)
  • Patent number: 8362926
Abstract: The present invention relates to method and apparatus for providing and using transportation information of various types of public vehicles. A public transportation information encoding method according to the present invention creates identifying information on a type of public transportation means and on stations pertaining to service line of the public transportation means, and further creates connection information for particular stations among the stations wherein citizens are able to use the same or different type of public transportation means on other stations near to the particular stations. The created information including the connection information is organized to status information which is then incorporated into a transfer message. Thusly constructed messages are transmitted wirelessly.

  • Patent number: 8364401
Abstract: The navigation system described here utilizes GPS and Galileo satellite signals combined with Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), where a Coupled Antenna (CAN) provides both GNSS and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data to a Highly Integrated GNSS-Inertial (Hi-Gi) receiver. Such receiver makes use of a high fidelity relation between GNSS unprocessed Correlator Output (COUT) I and Q data and the user trajectory, and inertial sensor data, which in turn are combined within a Kalman Filter (KF). The KF determines the navigation solution that is also used to provide feedback to the receiver demodulation signal processing stage, thus eliminating the need of dedicated structures such as Delayed Locked Loops (DLL) and Phase Locked Loops (PLL), allowing a significant improvement in navigation performance.

  • Patent number: 8364398
Abstract: A method of operating a navigation system to provide a route guidance message for traveling a route is disclosed. A plurality of features visible from a road segment of the route is obtained from a geographic database associated with the navigation system. An importance rating for each of the identified features is determined. The guidance message references the identified feature having a highest determined importance rating. The importance rating considers a permanence or a seasonal dependency of the identified feature. The importance rating is adjusted to favor the identified feature closest to the lane in which the vehicle is currently located.

  • Publication number: 20130013198
Abstract: This invention includes a method of creating a navigation route based on certain criteria along several possible routes. One such criterion can be property values along routes. A navigation system using such a method can operate either off-line, with property values retrieved from a database previously, or on-line, with real-time retrieval of property values from a database. The retrieval is done using a communication interface. The system can include a GPS unit for determining the present location of the system, and the system with such a GPS unit can create a property-value-based navigation route from the present location to the destination without the driver being required to know the present location. Other criteria can include values of cars, boats, or airplanes registered at locations along routes. Routes along which are residences of criminals can be avoided.

Abstract: Dehydration of routes enables transmitting a description of a route requiring much less space than full specification of the route. A series of “breadcrumbs” and hints are used for dehydration. A breadcrumb includes coordinates of a point, a heading at which the route enters the breadcrumb, and a heading at which the route leaves the breadcrumb. A dehydration module places a breadcrumb at the location marking the beginning of the route, and having a leaving heading identifying the link in the original route. The node at the end of each link in the original route is examined. If the link leaving the node is the most parallel link to the link entering the node, nothing is added to the dehydrated route. If not, a breadcrumb is added to the dehydrated route, specifying the coordinates of the point, the entering heading of the breadcrumb and the leaving heading of the breadcrumb.

Abstract: In general, this disclosure describes techniques for providing a user of a computing device with the ability to view a realistic map of the sky based on information associated with the current location of the user. The information may be geographical information, orientation or directionality of the computing device, time and date, and zoom settings of the computing device. The computing device may use built-in capabilities (e.g., compass) and applications (e.g., maps and GPS) to determine the current location information. The computing device then uses the current location information to obtain celestial and topographical information. Using the celestial information, the computing device displays a map of the sky with the appropriate celestial bodies. Additionally, the computing device uses the topographical information to display a realistic rendering of the horizon, such that objects in the horizon may be displayed to render a realistic representation of the sky from the current location.

  • Patent number: 8315797
Abstract: A navigation system provides sensors and a user interface mounted in a single unit while allowing individual users to make adjustments to the user interface without affecting the functionality of the device. This is accomplished by mounting the orientation sensitive sensors (e.g. accelerometers, gyros, etc) rigidly to a mounting bracket rigidly mounted to the vehicle (such as to the dashboard). The sensors are mounted within a ball rigidly mounted to the bracket and the ball is secured within a rotatable socket on the user interface enclosure. In this manner, the user interface enclosure can rotate on the ball, but the orientation of the sensors relative to the vehicle will remain the same.

  • Patent number: 8315674
Abstract: A system and a method are provided for displaying location information on a mobile device. The location information can include direction, distance, positional coordinates, etc. The mobile device's display displays an image captured using the mobile device's camera. A selection input is received to identify an object in the image. A facing direction of the mobile device is detected using the mobile device's magnetometer. The mobile device determines a bearing to the object relative to the mobile device's facing direction. The mobile device then determines a distance between the mobile device and the object. The obtained or computed location data is overlaid on the image, thereby augmenting the image. The location data can include at least a direction indicator of the object and the distance between the mobile device and the object, whereby the direction indicator can be determined using the bearing.

Abstract: A vehicular navigation apparatus includes a control unit that sets a reachable area that is reachable by a vehicle, such that a remaining charge amount of a battery of the vehicle has a remaining charge amount above a quick charge threshold at the reachable area. The quick charge threshold is provided as a charge level of the battery that is required for a quick charge operation of the battery. The control unit further searches for a battery charge spot in the reachable area, and provides guidance to the battery charge spot. The control unit may further redefine the reachable area where a charge operation is scheduled, based on preferences provided by a user.

  • Patent number: 8312477
Abstract: A mobile device capable of running at least two operating systems (OS), and a method for sharing a wireless communication module between the operating systems are provided. A hardware controller is configured to communicate between the two operating systems. First, a first operating system encodes an instruction into a first uniform message and transmits the first uniform message to a second operating system, in which the wireless communication module is installed, through the hardware controller. Afterwards, the second operating system enables the wireless communication module to start receiving positioning data according to the first uniform message, encodes the data into a second uniform message, and sends the second uniform message back to the first operating system through the hardware controller. Finally, the first operating system decodes the second uniform message into positioning data.

  • Patent number: 8306727
Abstract: A control system controls a pair of vehicles in coordination to traverse a respective pair of trajectories. The control system is configured to specify a plurality of successive waypoints, a safe stopping interval and an intermediate interval greater than the safe stopping interval, and exchange waypoints between vehicles. The system controls each vehicle in coordination with the other, senses a rate of exchange of waypoint data between the vehicles, and determines the safe stopping interval. The control system updates positions with additional waypoints as the respective vehicles pass by waypoints of the forecasted trajectory, determines the length of the forecasted trajectory remaining and compares it with the intermediate interval and the safe stopping interval. The system generates a warning signal if distance is less than the intermediate interval, and if the distance is less than the safe stopping interval, stops within the safe stopping interval.

Abstract: Based on a requested target input by the driver using input means 14 (such as a destination, a travel method to the destination, for example, whether time is a priority or a fuel consumption is a priority), the driver plan creating ECU 1 selects the travel path based on the map information stored in map DB 13 and the current positional information of the vehicle obtained by the GPS 12. Additionally, the path information of the selected path is obtained, and the target track of the vehicle on the selected path is calculated. The variable area which is variable range of the calculated tracking based on the path information is obtained. The driving control ECU 2 uses the variable area information at the time of vehicle control.
