Abstract: Systems, processes, and techniques for calibrating an onboard sensor of a vehicle are presented here. The vehicle has a control system that is capable of performing at least some of the tasks related to the calibration procedure. An exemplary methodology collects vehicle status data and obtains navigation map data during operation of the vehicle. A current calibration factor is calculated for the onboard sensor, based on the collected vehicle status data and the obtained navigation map data. More specifically, the vehicle status and navigation map data can be used to determine when the current conditions are suitable for performing calibration. When the current conditions are satisfactory, the calibration factor is calculated. Thereafter, the onboard sensor can be calibrated in response to the current calibration factor.

  • Patent number: 9986375
Abstract: A location management system identifies points of interest that may be of interest to one or more users. The location management system defines a geofence boundary encompassing a particular point of interest. When the location management system determines that the user device is inside the geofence boundary—but not, for example, when the location management system determines that the user determines that the user device is outside the geofence boundary—the location management system instructs the user device to determine wireless signals available to the user device. The location management system then receives wireless signal data from the user device for available wireless signals. By matching the received wireless signal data to known wireless signals available at the identified points of interest, the location management system determines that the user device (and hence the user) is at the point of interest.

Abstract: Although GPS has become a standard component of smartphones, providing accurate navigation during the last portion of a trip remains an important but unsolved problem. Despite extensive research on localization, the limited resolution of a map imposes restrictions on the navigation engine in both indoor and outdoor environments. To bridge the gap between the end position obtained from legacy navigation services and the real destination, a “last-mile” navigation system is proposed to enable plug-and-play navigation in indoor and semi-outdoor environments. The system exploits the ubiquitous, stable geomagnetic field and natural walking patterns to navigate the users to the same destination taken by an earlier traveler. Unlike existing localization and navigation systems, the proposed system is infrastructure-free, energy-efficient and cost-saving.

Abstract: A system and method employing geo-tagging and/or biometric identification is employed for registration and management of a mass gathering event. Electronic devices are configured for capturing data and geo-tagging the captured data using the geographic position of the electronic device. Data relating thereto and related data concerning persons and/or locations and/or other things are associated with a unique identifier and are stored in a relational database from when they may be retrieved and processed for generating a response or other follow up which can be communicated to an electronic device. Responses are communicated to the electronic device that captured the data relating to the particular group of registrants or to an electronic device using its geographic location.

  • Patent number: 9488488
Abstract: A user points a handheld communication device to capture and display a real-time video stream. The handheld communication device detects geographic position, camera direction, and tilt of the image capture device. The user sends a search request to a server for nearby points of interest. The handheld communication device receives search results based on the search request, geographic position, camera direction, and tilt of the handheld communication device. The handheld communication device visually augments the captured video stream with data related to each point of interest. The user then selects a point of interest to visit. The handheld communication device visually augments the captured video stream with a directional map to a selected point of interest in response to the user input.

  • Patent number: 9483567
Abstract: A computer-implemented method and system may promote points of interest (POIs) for display on a digital map at a client computing device based on context information associated with a user. Location data from a client computing device may indicate a geographic location of the computing device. Using the location data, the system may determine a user classification indicating a degree of familiarity with the location indicated by the location data. Promotion data may be determined based on the location data and the user classification. The promotion data may indicate one or more sets of POIs to be promoted. The system may then send the determined promotion data to the client computing device, enabling display on the client computing device of the one or more indicated sets of POIs.

  • Patent number: 9473893
Abstract: An approach is provided for an application engine (e.g., a gaming engine) based on real-time location-based data. In one embodiment, an application engine determines one or more location-based data sources associated with at least one device. The one or more location-based data sources are determined in at least substantially real-time while the at least one device is engaged in at least one travel activity. The application engine then determines one or more elements of an application engine based, at least in part, on the one or more location-based data sources. The application engine causes, at least in part, a presentation of the one or more elements at the least one device during the at least one travel activity. In one embodiment, the application engine also causes, at least in part, a transformation of the one or more map data elements based, at least in part, on the one or more location-based data sources.
