  • Patent number: 6790535
Abstract: Parts inexpensively coated that yet are difficult to mar. The reel body 1 of a double bearing reel is given as an example of a part superficially coated in accordance with the invention. It includes a metallic base portion 10, an oxide film layer 11, a substrate paint film layer 12, and a finishing paint film layer 13. The finishing paint film layer 13 is formed by the application of a self-mending paint material. Forming the paint film layer on the surface of the reel body 1 by applying a self-mending paint material by the self-mending function of the paint material thus restores scratched portions if the surface is damaged due to scratching or the like. Therefore, scratches due to injuries tend not to remain on the coated part and as a result, scratches are unlikely to damage the surface of the body of the part. Moreover, forming the layer by applying a paint material facilitates low cost production.

The drag on the reel is automatically adjusted so that the reel discharge speed does not exceed the line speed. The invention includes a reel, a mechanism for measuring the relationship between the line speed and the reel discharge speed, an electronically controlled braking device and a microprocessor for controlling the braking device in response to the relationship between the line speed and the reel discharge speed. When the reel discharge speed exceeds the line speed additional braking is applied. One alternative embodiment of the invention intermittently applies a very short pulse of braking action to the reel. Abstract: A fishing rod detects conditions indicative of backlash and controls the rate of rotation of a reel spool to prevent that condition. The rotational speed of the spool is regulated based on a comparison between the rate of line released from the reel and the rate of line cast from the rod. Alternatively, the rotational speed of the spool is regulated based on a comparison between the amount of line released from the reel and the amount of line cast from the rod. The rotational speed of the reel is also regulated based on the slope of the fishing line between the spool to the rod, where a decreased slope indicates excess line release resulting in increased braking of the reel spool.

  • Patent number: 5007601
Abstract: A water depth measuring device for a fishing reel has a mounting seat integrally provided on an upper portion of a reel body. A main section of the measuring device is integrally formed and includes a watertight compartment housing electrical components such as a sensor, a controller, an indicator, a sound maker, and a power supply. A rotation detection section of the measuring device is provided in a projecting case mounted on the reel body and includes a roller mechanism having a magnet attached thereto. A roller included in the roller mechanism is biased into contact with a fishline wound on the fishing reel to rotate upon cast of the fishline from the fishing reel to cause rotation of the magnet and the generation of a flux signal. The sensor in the main section of the measuring device detects the flux signal and an indication of the length of the fishline cast is displayed on the indicator. The sound maker provides an audible signal indicating the cast of a selected length of fishline.

  • Patent number: 5007602
Abstract: A click mechanism in a fishing reel is adapted to produce a click sound on relative rotation between a shaft having a first member non-rotatably connected thereto, and a second member which is rotatably mounted on the shaft. The click mechanism comprises a snap-action click ring which is provided between the first member and the second member. First teeth are formed on the side of the first member facing the snap-action click ring. Second teeth are formed on the side of the second member facing the snap-action click ring. The snap-action click ring comprises a first resilient tongue and a second resilient tongue which extend in the same direction in the circumferential direction of the snap-action click ring but are outwardly bent in opposite directions in the axial direction thereof. The first resilient tongue engages the first teeth, and the second resilient tongue engages the second teeth.

  • Patent number: 4977795
Abstract: A ratchet mechanism comprising a rotatable member incorporating a toothed periphery, the rotatable member being suitably mounted to allow free rotation thereof, a pawl incorporating apparatus for engaging the toothed periphery, the pawl being suitably mounted to permit movement thereof from a position in which the pawl allows said rotatable member to rotate freely in either direction of rotation to a position in which the pawl prevents said rotatable member from rotating in one direction, and selectively operable apparatus to move the pawl between said positions, said selectively operable apparatus incorporating an over-dead-center spring arrangement to bias the pawl into the selected position.

  • Patent number: 4940194
Abstract: A casting reel (10) has a reel housing (22). A reel spool shaft (14) is rotatably mounted in the reel housing. A magnetic disc (12) is connected to rotate with the shaft (14). An electrical coil (20) produces an output signal in response to movement of the disk (12). A control circuit (28) is connected to receive the output signal from the electrical coil (20). The control circuit (28) has a thyristor (52) which produces a drag signal that varies based on the output signal from the electrical coil. The electrical coil and magnetic disk provide a variable drag on the reel spool shaft (14). The variable drag changes based on the drag signal from the thyristor (52).

  • Patent number: 4934628
Abstract: An improved counter housing assembly for a fishing reel of the type supporting a spool at both ends includes left and right side frame elements for holding the spool and one or more support frames connecting the frame elements. A case is formed integrally with one of the support frames for housing a counter mechanism. This arrangement isolates the counter mechanism against external shocks, and does not impede manipulation or handling of the reel by a user.
