Abstract: The asymmetric gasket counteracts the twisting tendency of a gasket in radiused portions. The design also energizes the seal in higher pressure applications to further increase the seal force and uniformity. The result is the minimization of potential for gasket roll and maximized seal pressure and stability. The gasket includes a gasket body having an upper surface and a lower surface each adapted to engage one of the two members being sealed. The gasket body has a radiused portion having an asymmetric cross section wherein the intermediate portion of the outboard surface extends radially outward from the outboard edges of the upper and lower surfaces to a greater extent than the intermediate portion of the inboard surface extends radially inward from the inboard edges of the upper and lower surfaces.

Abstract: A plastic package for an image sensor or other electronic component which comprises a plastic body, preferably of LCP material, molded around a leadframe and defining a cavity in which the image sensor is to be disposed. A lid assembly is provided having a transparent glass lid retained in a plastic lid frame which is weldable or otherwise bondable to the plastic body of the package to enclose the image sensor mounted in the cavity. The leadframe is usually composed of copper or a copper alloy, or a ferrous alloy having a copper coating. An interfacial layer is formed on the surfaces of the leadframe at least in those portions which are in contact with the plastic body which serves to provide substantially improved adhesion between the leadframe and the plastic material to achieve a hermetic bond between the metal and plastic materials. The interfacial layer is composed of a cuprous oxide base layer formed on a surface of the leadframe, and a cupric oxide layer formed on the cuprous oxide layer.

Abstract: A three-way poppet valve that can restrict or eliminate backflow without the use of an external check valve. Unlike conventional three-way poppet valves wherein both inlets can be open to the outlet at the same time during movement of the poppet, the valve according to the present invention can be configured to close both inlets prior to opening one of the inlets to the outlet. The valve features a poppet valve assembly that is operable to prevent both inlets from being open to the outlet at the same time. The valve assembly also reduces the force needed to close the valve against at least one of the inlets thereby allowing the use of a smaller actuator. A unique seal including a valve seat that is configured to conform to a valve member under sufficient pressure.

Abstract: A panel assembly of the kind found in the air intake of a gas turbine engine or a fan duct is designed to be demountable for maintenance purposes. Consequently there exists between the panels a gap to be sealed. The invention provides a deformable seal for the purpose comprising an elongate, hollow resilient member mounted on a flange at the edge of one of the panels and arranged to be pressed against a flange at the confronting edge of the adjacent panel. The flanges are shaped such that the hollow member when pressed between the flanges effectively seals the gap between the panels and a portion of the seal member lies flush between the panel edges.

  • Patent number: 7114254
Abstract: A metal gasket assembly has a gasket plate and an annular grommet. The gasket plate is formed with an opening having opposing surfaces adjacent the opening to define a predetermined fixed thickness of a plate. The annular grommet has an elastically deformable U-shaped body. The U-shaped body has legs presenting outer sealing surfaces defining an initial undeformed thickness that is greater than the thickness of the gasket plate. The opening formed in the gasket plate receives the grommet. A compressive force applied in a generally perpendicular direction to the opposing surfaces of the gasket plate deform the legs of the body to a reduced thickness corresponding substantially to the thickness of the gasket plate. When the compressive force is reduced with changes in operating conditions, the legs of the grommet return toward their original undeformed thickness to maintain a seal.

Abstract: A crankcase is coupled to a lower end face of a cylinder block of an engine and includes first and second case halves coupled to each other in a plane perpendicular to joint surfaces of the cylinder block and the crankcase. A U-shaped seal groove is defined in one of the joint surfaces of the case halves. Enlarged recesses are made at opposite ends of the seal groove. A bar-shaped seal member having enlarged end portions formed at opposite ends thereof is mounted in the groove such that the enlarged end portions are filled in the enlarged recesses. Thus, it is possible to ensure accuracy of the positioning of the bar-shaped seal member without the need for a high level skill; thereby, reliably sealing portions of intersection between the joint surfaces of the cylinder block and the crankcase and the joint surfaces of the case halves of the crankcase.
